Launched in 1904, Hong Kong Tramways is one of the earliest forms of public transport in the metropolis and has witnessed the city’s development over the past century. The double-deck tram is affectionately called the “Ding Ding” by locals, the onomatopoeia of the iconic double bell ring of approaching carriages.
Among many transportation enthusiasts in the city, Joseph Cheng has spent the last 30 years indulging in his passion for trams – photographing them, publishing books about them, even establishing the Hong Kong Trams Culture Preservation Society. He calls himself a fanatic that sees trams as his life. Fe says half-jokingly, “I think my world will end if trams cease to exist one day. I may protest by lying on a tram track.”
