＜用衛星圖找尋瀑布＞ 沒有人在照片裡，很難表現出比例尺。該瀑布20多公尺高，後面的懸崖更有100多公尺高以上。巨大的岩石和滑坡使照片中的一切看起來都微不足道，但是現場親眼目睹卻令人嘆為觀止。面對這座山，我們都很渺小。

當我發現它時，也很難解釋我的感受。至少可以說這個瀑布很遙遠。即使在開始溪流溯溪之前，您也會失去網路信號。路線很長，坡度很高。每年的這個時候這個高度也很冷。當您知道有目的地在終點時，徒步旅行的時間就不會覺得那麼漫長了。但這是一條只有可能存在的東西還有很長的路要走。我的朋友無法繼續決定更早時間止步，所以我獨自走了最後800公尺。我不能保證我們實際上可以健行旅行到任何地方。有可能最後只是浪費力氣而已。

這就是在衛星照片上留下污跡的風險。最後可能甚至沒有大瀑布。路線未知，即使有，您也可能無法到達那裏。沒有其他訊息可以繼續下去，我甚至不知道它是否真實存在。但是，如果我到達那裡，那自然就在確認我的整個信仰體系。它是真實的。我並不瘋狂，而且它確實存在。這是最終的成就感。

Without a person in the photo it's difficult to show a sense of scale. This waterfall is over 20 meters tall, and the cliff behind it goes up more than 100 meters. The sheer size of the rocks and the landslide make everything look miniature in photographs, but it's breathtaking to see in person. We are all very small when faced with the mountain.

It's also difficult to explain how I felt when I found it. This waterfall is remote to say the least. You'll lose mobile signal even before starting the river trace. The route is long, and the gradient high. This time of year it's also cold at this elevation. It's not such a long hike when you know there is a destination at the end. But it's a long way to go for something that only might exist. My team decided to stop earlier, so I went on the last 800 meters by myself. I couldn't guarantee that we were actually hiking to anywhere. It might just be a lot of effort for nothing.

That's the risk of following a smudge on a satellite photo. There might not actually even be a big waterfall at the end. The route is unknown, and you may not be able to reach it, even if there is. With no other information to go on, I don't even know if it's real until I make it. But if I do get there, then it's like nature is confirming my whole belief system. It's real. I'm not crazy, and it really does exist. This is the ultimate satisfaction.

今天我們要去拜訪，台灣最大的高山湖泊！
Today we’re going to visit Taiwan’s biggest mountain lake!

2016-2017 Episode 40 Taipingshan Nature Tour/太平山森林之旅

在3萬6千平方公里的台灣土地上，就有268座、超過3000公尺以上的高峰，這樣的密度，在世界上可以說是數一數二。
With an area of around 36,000 square kilometers, Taiwan is a mountainous island that boasts 268 mountains over 3000 meters high. It’s been said that the density of high mountain peaks here is second to nowhere else in the world.

因為我們是觀光客，不是登山客，所以今天要去的太平山，矮了一點點，大概只有1950公尺。
Because we’re tourists, not hikers, the place we’re going today is Taipingshan, which is a bit shorter than some of the others at about 1950 meters.

太平山以前是台灣的三大林場之一，伐木工人在這條中央階梯附近，形成了一個林業聚落，行走在這裡的人，在當年，是為了生活，而現在，則是為了賞楓。
Taipingshan used to be one of Taiwan’s three major logging centers. Lumberjacks used to live around these central stairs in what was a small village. Back then, those who walked along here came for work. Now, they come to admire the maple trees.

即使是夏天，在這裡還是能欣賞到楓紅，實在是太棒了
Even in summer, you can see red maple leaves here. It’s so amazing!

夏天來台灣到太平山熱門的行程之一，就是觀賞紫葉槭，一年四季中，春、夏、秋這三季，都能欣賞到這令人讚嘆的美景。
It’s popular in Taiwan to come to Taipingshan in summer to look at the purple-leaf maple, whose leaves have a deep red color throughout spring, summer, and fall. It’s a beautiful sight!

418個階梯只是暖身，接下來我們要前進翠峰湖了！
These 418 steps are just a warm-up! Next up is Cueifong Lake!

翠峰湖位於太平山和大元山之間，想要親眼看到這個美麗的湖泊，有四條登山健行步道可以選擇，今天我們要挑戰的是，距離最長的環山步道。
Cueifong Lake is located between Taipingshan and Tayuan Mountain. If you want to see this beautiful lake with your own eyes, there are four different hiking trails you can choose to get there. The one I’m taking today is also the longest one, the circular trail.

環山步道全長大約3.9公里，這條步道大部份都是利用以前運送木材的軌道、整建而成，降低對生態的破壞
The circular trail is 3.9 kilometers long, and was mostly built along the route of an old logging railroad line in order to better preserve the surrounding environment.

整條步道設置了好幾個觀景台，讓你從不同的角度欣賞湖景，你看～是不是很美...
There are several sightseeing spots along the trail that give you a different angle on the lake. Isn’t it beautiful?

翠峰湖就是像隱匿於群山中的綠寶石，置身其中就像是時空停止般，只剩下自己 還有翠峰湖
Cueifong Lake is like an emerald hidden among the mountains. It feels like time stops and everything else fades away when you gaze upon the water.

好想再看久一點哦，但是我們還有一半的路要走...
I really want to stay longer, but we still have half of the trail to go…

步道的後半段，還有令人大開眼界的地理景觀，聳天的檜木林有著茂密苔原，這裡稱為奧陶紀苔原區，即使不是植物學家，光聽名字，也知道它們的珍貴性。
On the second half of the trail, there is another special sight. Lush cypress trees stretch skyward, in one of the old-growth forests that make up what is called an Ordovician tundra biome. Even if you’re not a botanist, you can guess from the name just how valuable these trees are.

除了珍貴的苔原景觀之外，這裡隨時都有想像不到的驚喜出現，翠峰湖豐富的自然生態，隨時都會讓人停下腳步...
Beside the cypress tree biome, there are all sorts of unimaginable surprises waiting for you along the circular trail. The rich environment around Cueifong Lake will frequently stop you in your tracks.

一路走走停停，要數小時才能走完近4公里的步道，終點還有著離湖最近的觀景台。
When you’re stopping and starting, it can take several hours to cover nearly 4 kilometers. This viewing platform near the end is the closest to the lake itself

By available information from cellphone reception we assumed he may turn to south ridge from SanZhui mt.
Victim's phone discharge or get out of reception next day at 4:20am, never call again...

Against better judgment and all possible safety regulations, I once again got tricked into checking out an extremely dangerous mountain hike in Taiwan. This time it was New Taipei City's Sanxia Wu Liao Jian (五寮尖).

Although I do NOT recommend anyone to actually check out this hike, I recommend EVERYONE to check out this video and the drone footage in the end which shows the insane climb down after spending around 2 hours climbing up the mountain using nothing but ropes, blood, sweat and tears.

- 8:30 AM ARRIVE CHIAYI STATION
That’s the TRA station - not the high speed rail. If arriving by high speed rail allow up to 30 minutes to catch a taxi to the TRA station.

- 9:00 AM TRAIN FROM CHIAYI STATION TO FENQIHU STATION (runs at 9:00 on weekdays, 9:30 and 10:00 on weekends, trip time 2.5 hours)
You can’t go all the way to Alishan station now as the track was damaged in a typhoon and they’re not going to fix it).
You can buy tickets in advance here: https://afrch.forest.gov.tw/. The website is only in Chinese so use google chrome on your computer to translate the page. Pay by credit card then pick the ticket up at ANY major train station when you arrive in Taiwan (show your passport at the ticket window).

- LUNCH AT FENQIHU
Fenqihu was the popular stop for loggers at lunchtime so it’s a really cute little old town. The bento shop shown in the video is next to the 7-Eleven. When you arrive at Fenqihu, go all the way down the stairs, walk straight down the street and you’ll see it. Fenqihu isn’t big so you can wander around for the rest of the time. Unfortunately unless you stay in Fenqihu overnight, there’s not enough time to go hiking or see the lake (which is what the town is named after).

- BUS FROM FENQIHU TO ALISHAN TRANSPORT STATION
Use google maps for directions on where to catch the bus from (up on the highway). Set your destination as “Alishan station” and select directions for public transport. Schedules say the bus leaves at 2:40 but we arrived at the highway just before 2:30 and the driver said it was already past time to leave. So get there a little early! This is apparently the last bus, although you can catch another bus to Shizao, then change for a bus to Alishan (that seemed too annoying so we didn’t do it).

- DINNER AT ALISHAN
I haven’t seen one good food review on Alishan (it’s not what you’re there for anyway!) - so we just got beers and instant noodles from the 7 Eleven and enjoyed them at the hotel.

- STAY AT ALISHAN HOUSE
Look around for deals online, or stay at another hotel near the Alishan station (https://goo.gl/maps/Mn2yTnAAoWn). There are quite a few. Don’t expect a cheap hotel to have good facilities, this is a very popular tourist destination. Book early especially in peak season!

- SUNRISE TRAIN
Tickets for the sunrise train (around 350nt round trip) are sold the afternoon before at the Alishan train station. If staying at Alishan house you can buy them straight from the hotel reception, or if staying somewhere else, go to Alishan train station to buy these.

- HIKING
There are trails around the train station area. Pick up a map from the station or your hotel. The train on top of the mountain can also take you to some of the attractions if you’re tired of walking.

- BUS BACK TO CHIAYI
Get a timetable from the 7-11 at the transport station (or your hotel will have one). Use your easycard/ipass card to pay for the bus fare BUT you need to “save your bus spot” at the 7 Eleven first. I tried doing this 30 minutes before catching the bus but there were no spots left so we had to wait 1.5 hours until the next bus. So do this as early as you can. The last bus leaving from Alishan transport station to go down the mountain is around 5:00 pm.

There are taxi drivers around the transport station trying to get you to go down the mountain with them. I don’t recommend this option.
