Gary viết một cuốn sổ tay hướng dẫn chăm sóc dài 32 trang, trình bày cách người chủ có thể chăm sóc hòn đá "thú cưng" và những "trò" mà nó có thể thực hiện.
Sản phẩm mà Gary Dahl, người đàn ông đến từ California kinh doanh là một hòn đá, giống như bất kì hòn đá nào bạn thấy trên đường hay ở sau vườn của mình. Thế nhưng, chỉ cần "gắn" thêm cái tên "Pet Rock" kèm một chiếc hộp được đóng gói cẩn thận, nó đã được bán với giá 3,95 USD.
Có thể nói, Gary là một thiên tài trong lĩnh vực marketing bởi ông đã bán một thứ gần như vô giá trị, có mặt ở khắp nơi và thu về hàng triệu USD.
Vậy người đàn ông này đã kiếm được 6 triệu USD trong 6 tháng như thế nào?
Sự ra đời của "Pet Rock"
Giống như nhiều câu chuyện kinh doanh thành công khác, chuyện về Pet Rock bắt đầu trong một quán bar.
Đó là mùa hè năm 1975. Khi Gary đang đi chơi với bạn, cuộc trò chuyện của họ chuyển sang chủ đề thú cưng. Những người bạn của ông kêu ca rằng nuôi chúng tuy vui nhưng các công đoạn cho ăn, chăm sóc, làm vệ sinh… khá mệt mỏi và tốn thời gian. Gary cười và nói rằng ông có một thú cưng hoàn hảo vì hoàn toàn không cần bất cứ sự chăm sóc nào. Nó là một hòn đá!
Đối với hầu hết mọi người, đó sẽ là kết thúc của cuộc nói chuyện nhưng với Gary, người làm trong lĩnh vực quảng cáo thì đây lại là một cơ hội kinh doanh hiếm có.
Ông quyết định bán những hòn đá bình thường, có thể tìm thấy ở khắp nơi, MIỄN PHÍ, làm thú cưng cho đối tượng khách hàng mục tiêu là những người muốn có vật nuôi nhưng ngại chăm sóc, dọn dẹp. Sau khi đóng gói cẩn thận, Gary quảng cáo rằng đây là vật nuôi dễ chăm sóc nhất Trái Đất.
Sử dụng kỹ năng viết quảng cáo của mình, Gary viết một cuốn sổ tay hướng dẫn chăm sóc dài 32 trang, trình bày chi tiết cách người chủ có thể chăm sóc "thú cưng" của họ và những "trò" mà hòn đá có thể thực hiện.
Loại đá mà Gary sử dụng là đá xám. Sau đó, ông thiết kế hộp các tông để đựng hòn đá giống như loại hộp mà các cửa hàng thú cưng sử dụng vào thời điểm đó. Mỗi hòn đá được đặt trong một cái ổ rơm và chiếc hộp được khoét lỗ để nó có thể "thở".
Sự phát triển của "Pet Rock"
Gary ra mắt sản phẩm tại San Fransisco Gift Show vào giữa năm 1975. Ông đã tự viết và gửi thông cáo báo chí. Sản phẩm độc đáo này đã thu hút sự chú ý của giới truyền thông và nhanh chóng trở nên viral - một kỳ tích khó đạt được hơn nhiều trước khi mạng xã hội và Internet ra đời.
"Pet Rock" được giới thiệu trong một bài báo trên tạp chí Newsweek và điều này đã khiến báo chí khắp nước Mỹ xôn xao. Ngay sau đó, Gary được mời tham gia chương trình truyền hình Johnny Carson để nói về "phát minh" của mình.
Tất cả những yếu tố trên đã tạo ra sự nổi tiếng miễn phí cho Pet Rock. Gary cho biết ông không chi quá nhiều tiền cho quảng cáo. Lời nói đùa tại quán bar từ vài tháng trước của ông giờ đây đã trở thành ý tưởng triệu đô. Khi mua lễ đến gần, Gary bán được khoảng 10.000 hòn đá mỗi ngày.
Ngày càng bán được nhiều, "Pet Rock" càng được truyền thông chú ý. Chỉ trong 6 tháng, Gary đã bán được gần 1,6 triệu sản phẩm, tương đương với 6 triệu USD. Đây là một con số lớn vào những năm 1970.
Tạp chí Time gọi hiện tượng này là "1% sản phẩm và 99% là thiên tài marketing".
Tại sao "Pet Rock" thành công?
Cũng như rất nhiều sản phẩm khác, "Pet Rock" phần lớn thành công là nhờ vào "thiên thời". Khi đó, người Mỹ có xu hướng muốn tìm một niềm vui đơn giản trong cuộc sống và thú cưng vô tri vô giác của Gary đã đáp ứng nhu cầu đó của họ.
Ngoài ra, khiếu hài hước của Gary cũng là yếu tố quan trọng tạo nên thành công của sản phẩm. Sổ tay hướng dẫn chắm sóc "Pet Rock" chứa đầy sự dí dỏm thông minh và những trò chơi chữ hay ho.
Có thể nói, hầu hết mọi người đều cảm thấy nó giống một cuốn sách thú vị, đem lại những giây phút sảng khoái cho người đọc.

Bất cứ khi nào có một sản phẩm thành công, những sản phẩm bắt chước khác sẽ được sản xuất với mức giá thấp hơn nhiều. Tuy nhiên, thiếu đi sự độc đáo và hài hước của "Pet Rock" bản gốc, tất cả đều thất bại.
Bản thân Gary cũng cố gắng tận dụng thành công trước đó để tạo ra các sản phẩm ăn theo như áo phông hay dầu gội đầu"Pet Rock". Tuy nhiên, chúng đều không thành công. Sau 6 tháng thành công rực rỡ, "Pet Rock" rơi vào trạng thái "chết".
Tiếp đó, Gary tạo ra một số sản phẩm khác nhưng không "ăn thua" và cuối cùng quay trở lại nghề quảng cáo. Năm 2001, ông viết cuốn sách "Advertising for Dummies".
