"I have come a long way in terms of changing my lifestyle to transform my body and 2017 is the year I really tackle anti-aging head on and by that I mean preventing and reversing some of the things that happen to us as we age.
Age related muscle loss is first and foremost on my list and I outlined my plan to build muscle a couple of posts ago. Lifting heavy also helps increase bone mineral density and I'm trying to help this along by eating a lot more leafy greens which are rich in calcium, vitamin k, potassium and other minerals needed for healthy bones.
I believe food is medicine and when you eat for health, everything else falls into place. I think the best way to treat our bodies as we get older is to eat a diet rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant foods. It's hard to know where to start and so far I'm taking turmeric daily (in the form of turmeric latte's) and am adding blueberries and other berries to my green smoothies.
Two supplements which I want to ensure I take more regularly are omega 3's for joint care (I'll probably alternate between fish, krill and flaxseed oil) and a good probiotic for gut health.
I definitely find that when I eat clean and without dairy my skin is much clearer. I still take whey protein but this doesn't seem to affect me at all and I'm assuming that because I take a WPI it's due to being low in lactose. In terms of anti-aging skin care there are only four things I believe actually live up to their claims and make a noticeable difference and those are a good sunscreen, vitamin C serum, glycolic acid and Retin A and I plan to get back into a regular routine of using these. Although not fitness related I'm happy to do a skincare post if anyone is interested. 😃

Bún riêu cua is served with tomato broth and topped with freshwater crab . In this dish, various freshwater paddy crabs are used, including the brown paddy crab found in rice paddies in Vietnam. The crabs are cleaned by being placed in clean water to remove dirt and sand. The crabs are pounded with the shell on into a fine paste. This paste is strained and the crab liquid is a base for the soup along with tomato. The crab residue is used as the basis for crab cakes. Other ingredients for this dish include tamarind paste, fried tofu, mẻ or giấm bổng (kinds of rice vinegar), Garcinia multiflora Champ., annatto seeds (hạt điều màu) to redden the broth, huyết (congealed pig's blood), split water spinach stems, shredded banana flower, rau kinh giới (Elsholtzia ciliata), spearmint, perilla, bean sprouts and chả chay (vegetarian sausage). Healthy well balanced Clam Chowder using lots of vegetables, rich in vitamins, iron, and calcium.
I learned this recipe at the Maternity cooking class held by the city I live in. Since I don't like milk, I used soy milk instead.
Recipes for moms are always good for whole family ;)

Healthy Homemade Clam Chowder
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 20min
Number of servings: 4
Calories per serving: 135Kcal
Ingredients:
130g (4.6oz.) canned shelled Asari clams in water
100g (3.5oz.) chopped onion
80g (2.8oz.) Komatsuna (Japanese spinach)
40g (1.4oz.) chopped bacon slices
100g (3.5oz.) potato
2 tbsp. flour
150ml soy milk
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. Sake *water is okay
300ml = water + the liquid from the canned Asari
1 tsp. butter
cracked black pepper
*You don't have to parboil Komatsuna (Japanese spinach) because it doesn't contain that much oxalic acid content compared to the regular spinach. If you are using the regular spinach, please parboil it!
Directions:
1. Chop Komatsuna and separate stalks and leaves. Dice potato and soak in water (to prevent from changing color & remove starch).
2. Heat butter in a pot and cook the chopped onion until tender. Add the chopped bacon and cook until done. Then add the Komatsuna stalks and chopped potatoes, and cook until coated with oil.
3. Add Sake, cover, and steam until the potatoes are cooked.
4. Add flour and mix until blended.
5. Add water + the liquid from the canned Asari, then bring to a boil. Add Asari and Komatsuna leaves. When it becomes to a boil, remove the foam.
6. Mix in salt, pepper, and soy milk. Cook until hot and serve in a dish.

Slightly sweet and sour flavor is addictive ;)
Chinese Cabbage (or Napa Cabbage) is a tasty low calorie food. We call it Hakusai (白菜) in Japanese. It is a good source of vitamin C, calcium, iron, carotene, etc... especially in the white part of the cabbage. Thus, the broth is rich in nutrients!!!
No wonder, this is the perfect recipe for leftover Chinese cabbage.

Tasty Simmered Pork and Chinese Cabbage Recipe
Difficulty: Easy
Time: 15min
Number of servings: 2
Ingredients:
550g (1.2lb.) Chinese Cabbage
100g (3.5oz.) thinly sliced pork
A
* 160cc water
* 1/2 consomme cube
* 1 tbsp. soy sauce
* 2 tbsp. ketchup
* 2 tbsp. vinegar
1 tbsp. starch with 1 tbsp. water
sesame oil
Directions:
1. Cut out the hard core and separate the leaves and the white parts (stalks). Cut the leaves into bite-size pieces. Thinly slice the white parts (stalks) diagonally into bite-size pieces (we call this diagonal cutting technique "Sogigiri").
2. Cut thinly sliced pork into bite-size pieces.
3. Heat sesame oil in a pan, add pork and stir-fry on medium until pink color is nearly gone (about 1 minute). Add the white parts of cabbage and cook on medium until crisp-tender (about 3 minutes).
4. Then add A, add cabbage leaves, cover, and simmer on low until the cabbage is tender (about 5 minutes).
5. Turn off the heat, add starch with water, heat on medium-high to thicken the broth.
