The biggest oil spill in Ecuador in more than a decade has created a crisis within a crisis for Indigenous peoples living in the Amazon. Hiding in their territories to escape infection from coronavirus, hundreds of indigenous communities are now cut off from fresh food and water because their rivers have been contaminated with crude oil.
Today they’re fighting back-- affected Indigenous families, local and regional indigenous organizations have filed a lawsuit demanding the Ecuadorian government and oil companies provide adequate cleanup and remedies for affected communities, as well as repair/relocate the pipelines to avoid future spills.
