Yoshitomo Nara: Works 1987-2017 Jul. 15~Sep. 24 2017
Nara’s artworks have a sincerity that resonates with viewers regardless of their culture, social background, age or gender. They are poignant yet psychologically charged meditations on solitude and memory. By evoking universally shared emotions and experiences, Nara allows viewers to relate to his work on a deeply personal level.
From the late 1980s, Nara spent a decade based in Düsseldorf and Cologne, Germany, where he developed his artistic language—figurative images drawn from memories and the profound solitude he felt during his childhood in northern Japan. Early on, his practice was characterized by bold compositions, be it in richly layered paintings on canvas, spontaneous and emotionally direct drawings, or installations of found objects. From the mid-1990s, Nara gained increasing recognition, establishing himself not only in the international art world but also in the broader pop cultural consciousness. Since the 2000s, he has further refined his compositions to depict figures that gaze directly at the viewer. These paintings have an almost translucent quality—a radiance that lingers in the mind.
Nara’s travels all over the world, his encounters with people from countless different walks of life, and his love of art, history, literature and music have all shaped his sensibility. The emotional residue of these experiences is evident in his work. Believing in art as a means to form connections, he leaves open a space for a variety of different readings and emotional responses, ranging from catharsis to political defiance and hope.

figurative art 在 Red Hong Yi Facebook 八卦
This year I’ve been intentional in wanting to focus on creating portraits that reflect my Asian heritage and identity, and I’ve been incredibly inspired by black figurative artists. Historically, when black people were depicted in Western art, it was often as a caricature or in another derogatory way. That’s why these portraits, done by contemporary black artists, are so powerful. I can only imagine the impact seeing these portraits in person - many times larger than on my mobile phone screen - staring back at me in a gallery or museum space. These artists have inspired me to want to create portraits so that more Asian faces are also represented in such paintings.
.
Please let me know if there’s any other portrait artists you love - I’d love to check out their work. Also, I’ve noticed that there aren’t many Asian portrait artists (or that I know of! I’m thinking of Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang...who else? I also recently discovered @miznegi’s captivating paintings of Asian human figures). Would love if you could suggest some names so I can start doing a bit of research!

CHUNG Yin Chen

The Child Seeking for Light on the Dim Plains
By CHUNG Yin Chen
Prologue
As if trying to be rid of the mundanity of the world, he chooses to travel solo into the unknown with a rucksack on his back, paving his way through the plains at his own pace. The occasional company of a puppy on the journey is often silent, a silence that pierces through time and space, encouraging one to investigate, empty, reiterate, break away and reborn over and over again, as he tirelessly seeks for the hidden yet radiant child within himself through his paint brushes.
Content
He says: “One is always faced with the unknow, as if searching for a trail on a wild plain. The past masters may have already made the same journey, and I may find new directions from the ashes left from their campfires and continue to explore the path…I sense that making art is just like this.”
From the hyperrealistic figurative paintings of the early “Strawberry Generation” series which consist of bright colours with contrasting dark atmosphere to Lo’s recent abandonment of large-scale canvases and vivid colours in favour of unalloyed and tranquil compositions, one may wonder if he had changed. But as a matter of fact, he had not altered at all, he had simply chosen to go back to the purest beginning of his art. “There have been two different stages in my life. I had wanted to challenge the human capacity in pursue of perfection and grandeur, but now I work with the space, weather, season, temperature and humidity around me, for I want to deliver the “warmth of my hands” despite their flaws. The flaws are part of me, and they are also the charms of human as a species.”
The paintings of the so-called “beauties” in the public eye were simply portraits of friends within Lo’s social circle. Through the portraits of these females, the artist aimed to explore multiple social issues such as identity, nationality, economic inequality, as well as investigating the cultural significance that is unique to Taiwan as a nation. For he believed the question of “how to inspect oneself” has always been avoided in the Taiwanese society...(to be continued)
