【A Message to the World (From Taiwan)
This is a message that I would like to share with the world.
A message from Taiwan.
Hi there, this is Vivi from Taiwan.
There’s something that I would like to share with you.
With more than 1.7 million confirmed cases and 100 thousand deaths around the world, the COVID19 pandemic outbreak has become the most challenging global health crisis of our time. This is an unprecedented time that has affected the lives of everyone in our global community, regardless of race, gender, culture, or skin colour.
At this defining moment in history, cooperation will bring upon the relief and clarity needed to triumph over a common threat facing humankind. In this fight, I, as a citizen of this global community, believe health is a fundamental human right that is inherent to all human beings. ‘Health For All, Leave No One Behind’ is a guiding principle of all health professionals, as well as a message that has resonated with us Taiwanese people through the toughest of times. In 2003, the SARS outbreak devastated my home country. Left isolated and marginalised by the WHO in the fight against SARS, we learned, through fearful uncertainty, how to tenaciously combat pandemics. But most importantly, the people of Taiwan experienced firsthand what it felt like to be left behind. Taiwan, despite just being miles off the coast of China, has effectively managed the spread of coronavirus in our country. And it is the belief that we should ‘leave no one behind’ that motivates us to play our role in the global community.
Taiwan can help, and Taiwan is helping.
In the past few weeks, the Taiwanese government has donated more than 10 million surgical masks to the United States, Europe, Southeast Asia, India, Central America and South America. Other medical supplies are also finding their way to all continents around the globe. Since the very first days of the outbreak, the Taiwanese government has devoted itself to fighting this pandemic. Through information transparency, quick response, early deployment and the effective use of big data, the functions of our society continue without interruption. To share our knowledge on COVID-19 with the world, we created virtual forums, participated by numerous countries, of our successful and internationally recognised public health policies. Our government and research centres have also teamed up with the Czech Republic, European Union and the United States in sharing tactics and technology and collaborating on the development of vaccines and rapid test kits. Finally, we have worked with different governments in analysing the economic, social and psychological impact of the epidemic and related isolation measures.
Taiwan cares, and Taiwan helps.
This virus can tear up the world, but it will not shake the foundations of humanity’s values. For a worldwide pandemic that does not discriminate based on borders and nationalities, it is crucial that we, in times of a crisis like this, stay stronger together.
Taiwan never forgets her friends from around the world.
We are part of this global team and we are in solidarity with the rest of the world.
Taiwan stands with you.

I'm serious, Germans have around 40 days of vacations in a whole year!
Recently in my German class, we were discussing about the job situations in every country. According to the statistics, Germans have 28 days of vacations and 11-13 days of holidays. These 40 days are not included two days off per week. And generally they get paid with their vacations and holidays.
After class I asked my friends in Taiwan and they replied me that they only have around 5-7 days of vacations per year! How can ppl work in such work environment >< And of course they also have holidays. But in some companies they ask their employees to work on holidays!
I would like to ask those who work in Taiwan, how many vacation days do you have per year? which field do you work? and do you have holidays? or do you need to work during the weekend?
Following are some work situations in several countries:
Poland:
They have around 48 days of vacations. However, the economy of this country is not too good or stable. Many ppl get underpaid or unemployed.
Japan:
I found that Japanese have quite a lot of vacations compared to other Asian countries. Normally they have 20 vacations and plus like 10 holidays. They have at least 30 days in total per year.
USA:
Data shows that Americans don't have many vacations and they don't get paid for their vacations. My American classmate told me that she could only have 5 vacations after she worked in that company for one year. I thought USA treat their employees quite well?!
Other European countries: (France/Spain/England)
Generally they have like 30 days of vacations. My french colleagues always took August the whole month off for their vacations.
Conclusion: I am telling you other countries are better than Taiwan. But I'd like to share with you more information of other countries. So you can have better understanding of other working environments. Hope you like this post and if you like it, plz share with your friends;)

Brexit.....Shifting Sands
Next Friday, the UK needs to decide on their own destination to be in Europe or not; and if they (legislators) decide to exit from EU, what kind of exit that they are comfortable with. The challenge lies in the fact that they cant decide uniletarally. EU Parliment must be consulted (using a very diplomatic word). In reality, they have to get the Continent to agree to their proposal of exit mechanism.
I had great pleasure attending the briefing on Brexit and its impact on UK, EU and US. The briefing was conducted by the Chief Economist of one of the biggest banks in the world hearquarted in London. Her data and analysis are superb.
Some of the insights that I can conclude from this analytical briefing:
a. The issue of foriegn immigaration has become one of the most accute problems nowadays. Brexit is just the outcome of this hard reality. UK is not alone. Looking into the the current political map of EU, there are many other countries which are run by the populist government which includes Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Hungry, etc.
b. The Brexit will not only hurt UK, but also a few EU countries which have big exposure to UK (export market).
c.At the times of uncertainty, the market tends to price in the uncertainty element of material changes. This will also hurt the market.
d. The position of London which has been known as the services centre for many centuries when it loses its passporting advantage after Brexit. Which city is the next candidate?
e. The contagious effect of Brexit meaning which country is the most probable candidate to follow the step of UK. All indications are pointing towards Italy.
f. A new curency market and tough fight of USD vs. GBP vs. Euro (not only GBP will be implicated but Euro too)
g. The most alarming signal is the rise of unilatarian vis-a-vis bilateral and community form of the world. It is easy and populist to call for exclusiveness but it is hard to believe in inclusiveness and sharing economy.
While we are not sure what would happen to UK, EU and the world after next Friday, the May goverment and all the British members of the Parliament are having sleepless night.
