FAMILIES AND BABIES
PM Lee: Glad to hear from Grace Fu that we have given out almost 20,000 SG50 Jubilee Baby gifts so far, including one to Tin Pei Ling. I hope couples will continue to have many babies beyond SG50.
Having a child is a major responsibility but we will help you, because every Singaporean child is precious to us. We will do so in four ways:
1. We will help couples live closer to their parents by introducing a Proximity Housing Grant. Every Singaporean household will be eligible, whether first-time buyer or not. You will get the Grant when you buy a resale flat with or near your parents, or your married children.
2. We will increase the amount of the Baby Bonus, and give it for every child. This will provide more support for larger families.
3. We will increase the Medisave Grant for Newborns. It will be enough to cover MediShield Life premiums for the child until age 21, and also help with other healthcare expenses.
4. Fathers play a vital role in bringing up children. You have to do your part. Paternity Leave will be increased from one to two weeks. The Government will pay for the extra week of leave. We will implement it on a voluntary basis first, and the Public Service will volunteer straightway.
The Baby Bonus, Medisave Grant, and Paternity Leave changes will apply with effect from 1 January 2015.
