The #rioolympics open today! Did you know that before the 1970s the Olympic Games were officially limited to competitors with amateur status? It was not until the 1980s that many events were opened to professional athletes. Every four years the finest athletes in the world gather in one location to compete against each other and determine who best exemplifies the Olympic motto—Citius, Altius, Fortius—meaning “faster, higher, stronger.” The modern Olympic Games are named for the athletic contests held at the ancient Greek site of Olympia. The ancient Greek games ended in ad 393. Many centuries would pass before the athletic contests of the Olympic Games were revived in 1896. Women first began competing in the Olympics in 1900.
