What happens when a pregnant lady suddenly has a craving for a treat from her childhood? Drive to an old school chinese bakery in Tsing Yi. Sold out? No problem, drive to Yuen Long and track down another shop.
Come back with ten of them and there you go - a very happy Wife 😊
These are called 豬籠餅 or 豬仔餅, a traditional mid autumn festival snack. Legend has it that a Guangdong bakery either tested the mooncake dough in the oven and it turned out golden brown and delicious, or he didn't want to waste the leftover dough and shaped the dough into different shapes and gave them as gifts for people who bought mooncakes. The tradition spread and these inexpensive sweet cookies became popular in Chinese tradition.
The most popular were the piglet shapes, which were then placed in "bamboo cages" much like how pigs where transported back in rural China.
Nowadays youngsters are unfortunately losing a connection with these fun snacks - not us oldies though!
