I didn’t meet my father until I was 6 years old. My parents had a comfortable, middle-class life in Shanghai, or as close as you could get under communism. But they always wanted to live overseas, and just before I was born, my dad came to Sydney to set things up. I don’t know why, but in the end, my mother and I didn’t join him until I was 6.

take a leaf out of someone's book 是一個很口語的片語，在看影片時常會聽到這個實用的慣用語，它字面上的意思是「#從某人的書拿走一頁(葉子)」, 但當有人跟你說 I think I can take a leaf out of your book 時， 你可別回答「不行，這本書很貴」喔! :)

那到底這個慣用語是什麼意思呢？

a leaf 是「一片葉子」，在這兒指(書的)「一頁」。想像一下這本書是一本劇本，裡面是描述一個人成功的人生，當你從裡面拿走「一頁」，帶走一個人他人生中「部分的劇本」，你就是想學習演出他部分的人生，所以引申為「#以某人為榜樣」、「#效仿某人」或「#學某人的樣子」的意思，因為這樣會帶給你你好處!

知道這個慣用語的意思後，再來要練習造句, 這樣才會真的學會如何使用它!

【父母的年度考績】
。
我們每一個人都在兼差。
。
我們是某人的兒女，也是某人的父母，某人的配偶，而同時我們也可能是某主管、某工程師、某助理，某老師。
。
為人兒女是一份工作，
為人父母也是一份工作，
為人夫妻是一份工作，
為人主管工程師助理老師也是一份工作。
。
既然是兼了差，這些工作之間應該要保持平衡，不能讓某一個工作過度影響了別的工作。
。
職場上，每年都會打考績。在為人兒女場，為人父母場，為人夫妻場，或許沒有人打考績。喔不，並不是沒有人打考績，而是那個考績不是白紙黑字，也不影響年終分紅，但是，他們嚴重的影響人生的其他面向。沒有人會因為職場上春風得意就感覺到幸福，因為要營造幸福感並不能只考其中一個場域上的成功就能夠達到，人生需要某些平衡，才能夠有幸福的感覺。
。
如果我們仔細想想會感覺到恐怖，我們明明兼了好幾份差，可卻把大部分的時間放在其中一份工上，其他的工，好像是"等到我這份工做完了才去做"的事情。
。
因為只有職場上會有很明確的考績，所以我們往往忽視了其他場域中的考績。
。
我們是否常因為職場上的工作，而忽略了為人父母的職責呢？
我們是否常為了某一份工作，而忽略了其他幾份工作呢？
。
嗯，我們的孩子不是我們的孩子，但是他們的確在幫我們打考績，用他們的行為。
父母的考績並不必然展現在孩子的學業成績上，學業成績只是考績項目之一，有其他更多更多重要的項目。

父母賞味期限倒數計時：從現在開始到孩子十八歲，他每天平均有 ____ 小時在家，到他十八歲之前，他會在我們身邊的總時數為 ______。

上面這些問題，如果很多答不出來，或是父母親的答案跟孩子差太多，或是很多根本沒想過，那請有所警覺，那意味著你的孩子不僅不是你的孩子，他可能像是住在你們家的房客，你則是他的提款機。啊如果是這樣，這件事情的警訊是，在人生的多樣兼職中，你有其中一個工作嚴重失職。為人父母是一個選擇，既然選了這個職業，不論當年是不是五秒鐘沖昏頭，既然做了，就得好好做完。
。
以上這些事情都不是安親班老師或是補習班老師可以幫你做的，所以你應該知道，寫功課這件事情可以外包，但是當父母不行。
你可以不陪孩子寫功課，不在乎他的學業成績，但是不能甚麼都不在乎。
如果這些問題你都答不上來，請好好計算一下，從現在到孩子十八歲，你還剩多少時間可以好好了解他。當然，你得評估一下，現在的他是否還有興趣讓你了解，還是說，他已經對你徹底失望，徹底放棄你了？
。
不要讓自己成為一個被孩子放棄的父母。
。
還有，孩子不會等你有空的時候才需要你。
