Hello everyone, I’m Shu Qi, a supporter of animal welfare groups. Having been to zoos and aquaria, I saw animals pacing ceaselessly, a dolphin swimming in circles endlessly. According to my knowledge, such abnormal behaviour is how they attempt to oppress tremendous loneliness and depression in their captive life. Were I to lose freedom and to be caged eternally, I would be overwhelmed by despair and fear. These captive animals feel the same either. Zoos always fail in satisfying animals’ desires and needs, like sufficient space for free movements, right of deciding own meals or right of choosing own partners. Some animals are severely stressed when they are put in the same cage, so they may attack each other. Some try to flee or attack humans, meanwhile, many of them die young. Everything important for the marine animals is also deprived in the aquaria. Every day, dolphins and orcas move merely in space which is the size of a bathing tub. They lose social connections and are unable to communicate with their own communication methods. They cannot hunt by themselves; instead, they are stuffed by dead fishes. Many marine animals are forced to perform meaningless tricks which are, of course, not their authentic behaviours. Animals in zoos and aquaria spend every minute in the same tiny cage and tank but this is not life supposed to be like for all creatures. No one should support such imprisonment. I hope you all can bring animals back to their original habitats with real actions.
