也許你曾經注意到世大運的官方名稱用了這個字：Universiade。你曾好奇這個字是怎麼來的嗎？其實「Universiade」是由「University」（大學）和「Olympiad」（奧林匹亞）組合起來的一個字。世界大學運動會起源於20世紀初的歐洲，直到巴西、日本、美國在1957年也派隊參加後，世大運才真正成為全球賽事。今天，世大運已發展成一項專為大學運動員所舉行的國際體育和文化活動，每兩年在不同的城市舉辦。世大運的主辦單位為國際大學運動總會（FISU），為世界上規模第二大的綜合體育賽事，僅次於奧運。

Have you ever wondered where the word “Universiade” comes from? Actually, it is a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad." Commonly known as the World University Games (WUG) in English, the World University Games originated in Europe in the early 20th century. Not until the 1957 World University Games University Games, with the inclusion of Brazil, Japan, and the United States, did it become a truly global event. Today, the World University Games is an international sport and cultural event for university student-athletes and is held every two years in a different city. Organized by the FISU - International University Sport Federation, it is the world’s second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games. #USATeam

美國隊謝謝台灣舉辦了這樣一場偉大的世大運。男籃總教練潘特(Matthew Painter)寫了一封信感謝台北居民對運動員的熱情款待，一起來讀一下這封信:

我們很高興看到舉重又重回今年世大運的舞台！舉重在2011深圳世大運和2013喀山世大運也都是選辦項目。今年兩屆奧運金牌得主許淑淨和2013世大運金牌得主郭婞淳將奮力為台灣留下金牌。今年美國的舉重代表隊由八男八女共16名選手組成。美國奧運舉重名將坎德瑞克‧法里斯 (Kendrick Yahcob Farris) 也曾在2013喀山世大運男子94公斤級獲得一面銀牌。祝福所有選手都能一「舉」成功！

We’re glad to see that weightlifting is back to the World University Games stage in Taipei this summer! Weightlifting was also one of the optional sports at the Summer World University Games in 2011 (Shenzhen) and 2013 (Kazan). Two-time Olympic gold medalist Hsu Shu-ching and 2013 Universiade gold medalist Kuo Hsing-Chun will be trying their best to win gold medals at home in Taiwan. At this year’s Games, USA Team will field a full team of 16 weightlifting athletes: eight men and eight women. Kendrick Yahcob Farris, who is now an Olympic weightlifter for the United States, won a Silver Medal in the Men’s 94KG at the 2013 World University Games. Wishing all the athletes good luck and happy lifting!
