Last week, the Inspiring Women Entrepreneurs (IWE) Program, a collaboration between AIT and Taiwan’s Council of Indigenous Peoples, hosted information sessions at Pingtung Indigenous Cultural Center and Taitung TTMaker for over 100 indigenous women. AIT’s
Public Diplomacy Section Chief Diane Sovereign attended both sessions and encouraged women small business owners to join the IWE Program so they can explore the basics of business through workshops and network with their mentors and peers.
This was Diane’s first visit to Taitung and Pingtung, where she experienced a warm Paiwan tribe welcome dance in Sandimen and met some of the most inspiring indigenous women entrepreneurs in the fields of arts, crafts, and commercial photography. She also met local indigenous women entrepreneurs in Taitung who integrate indigenous cultural elements into traditional businesses.
✅Join us at the next (and last) IWE information session, which will be held in New Taipei City on September 6, by visiting: https://pse.is/3jcyj7
✅For IWE information and online registration, visit: https://reurl.cc/7rEkRy.

After visiting this exhibition, I have learned that we have so many blessings around us and yet we sometimes take them for granted. But if you step back and think twice, it’s all these unnoticeable things comprise the vast majority of our lives. Take these traditional bamboo craftsmanship for example, bamboo is a great source to artisans around the world. So guys, let us all enjoy these small things to improve our life in a big way.

“Old Meets New” A traditional wagashi sweets store that conveys the colors of each season, studios for making kiriko cut glass and for dyeing textiles, a restaurant where you can enjoy sushi, soba noodles and other typical flavors of Edo. In Tokyo, there are over 3,000 traditional businesses, which we might call “venerable” as they have continued for over 100 years. Each one continues to be inspired by a spirit and a sense of beauty that has its roots in the old ways of life, with crafts, techniques, and know-how that has been passed down for generations. # Edo-Tokyo-Kirari

Today's shokunin spotlight is Takeda Senko, a Nagoya family crest black kimono dyeing facility. Of course, they dye colored kimono and other items as well! http://takedasenko.jp/
Many thanks to them for letting us film inside their factory!! We actually recorded this over a year ago, and also have a couple other shokunin videos to finish editing as well before we start interviewing new shokunin. Unfortunately the editing takes us a LONG time to finish by ourselves, hence the super long wait... ^^;; Hopefully the others will be up more quickly!
Shokunin (職人) is the Japanese word for craftsman or craftswoman. These are the men and women who preserve Japan’s traditional legacy of hand-crafting products including swords, drums, fans, pottery and more. Many shokunin use crafting methods that have been passed down for hundreds of years, sometimes within a single family. But because most things can be mass-produced these days, shokunin, and their skills, are disappearing. So, we want to help protect Japan’s historical arts by spreading awareness and broadening their market within Japan and overseas!
You can support Japan's shokunin by spreading awareness of their crafts, (and of course purchasing them, if you want!) Although, most shokunin don't have websites that ship overseas. You may unexpectedly stumble upon a shokunin's workshop when you're in Japan, so don't hesitate to drop in! Every craftman/woman and artisan we've met so far has been incredibly kind and happy to show us around!
