This trafficking survivor I'm standing with is Em "Hoa" (fake name to protect the girls). She's showing me where she used to play in the waterfall before she got trafficked. 👆 Im in the #Hmong outfit, Hoa is one of the girls we reunited with her family after escaping. Heres her story: Hoa's bestie and neighbor is "Ngu". (Both girls are in @themamamai IG dabbing photo.) Both are regular teens going to school and work selling goods for her family. Ngu meets a guy on Facebook and starts chatting w/ him every night. Dude invites Ngu to a festival coming up. Ngu declines, not wanting to go w/ him alone. Guy persists, she declines. Guy encourages her to bring a friend. She thinks about it...then agrees. Ok, she'll bring her BFF "Hoa". So they go w/ guy, he drives for a long distance. When they arrive he sells them, forces them into another van with trafficking agents. The girls realize shits going down, so they resist. They both get beat, gagged, and tied up. Girls are then driven across the border to China. They're ordered to change clothes in order to be sold as brides. Ngu puts up a huge fight, refuses to change. Traffickers beat her again, force her to change or they'll take her into the forest and rape her. Hoa, the BFF, convinces her to listen, bcuz they can plot another way to escape. Meanwhile back at home, Ngu's mom is freaking out that her daughter hasn't come home. She (while being illiterate) goes thru her phone and breaks into FB messages. She figures out that Ngu had been corresponding with that guy the last night her daughter was home. She takes the FB image of his face and prints copies to take to the police. Thru FB messages and somebody helping her to read, Mom finds out the guy lives in Lao Cai. She pays $200 to 2 men to help drive her to find her daughter. The next part of the story is cuhRAY but since I'm already rambling, head to my blog link below for full story, pictures, and how u can join me to put an end to #humantrafficking. #antihumantrafficking #moderndayslavery #pacificlinksfoundation #jeannieinVietnam

My view in #Sapa from the home of one of our trafficking survivors. She's part of the #Hmong ethnic minority tribe & was a top student in her class b4 she was tricked by a friend into going to a get-together. Instead, she's brought into China where a Chinese family bought her as a bride to their son. 2 yrs married, she was forced to get pregnant and gave birth to a baby girl. During her time in China she became fluent in Chinese as she did not speak #Viet to anyone else. However, our survivor never stopped believing that she would return home to #Vietnam someday. One day, survivor's "husband" had worked throughout the night, and was very tired so he fell into a deep sleep during the daytime. She finally had a chance to escape!! The only problem: her mother-in-law still had her daughter in her care, (who was just five months old). Our survivor was faced with a very difficult situation and in a split second, she decided to make a run for it. She jumped out of the window and escaped, leaving her daughter behind. Can u imagine having to make that decision?? She managed to make her way to the police in China, who then took her to the Vietnamese border. Now she lives in a #PacificLinksFoundation shelter for trafficking survivors. She's back in school at age 19, and is working very hard to regain her academic standing. Her dream is to become a doctor!! Fam, she is the sweetest young woman. When I speak with her, she recognizes she has been through an unimaginable traumatic time, but is focused on not letting it hold her back from life. She holds no ill will towards the man she was married off to in China. She thinks about the daughter she left behind, but there's nothing she can do about it now. She's chosen to focus on her future. (Update: while I was visiting our survivor, she found out her "husband" sold her daughter off to get remarried and have a son. She spent the weekend weeping). At the end of the day, these young women have gone through horrible tragedies that the rest of us could only imagine. However, they're determined to not allow themselves to be defined as trafficking victims.

Because it's so loud, it's hard to hear me till the end of the video, but I'll explain what's happening here. My team and I have come to an extremely rural village, north of #LaoCai, filled with hill tribes (indigenious people). We came to spread the word about how common trafficking is and warn locals how easily any family members friends or neighbors can be taken because AREAS LIKE THIS are the number ONE top hotzones for #humantrafficking into #China. And the luring starts all because theyre NOT aware that trafficking EXISTS. And remember, although #Vietnam is one of the top source countries for trafficking victims in the world, the buying and selling of humans takes place ALL over the world...yes, even America. (I'll tell u a story someday about how trafficking was revealed right in Freddy's neighborhood) Determined to end this.
FOLLOW my Snapchat (jeannie.mai) for details about my trip (Warning: I keep it 100 so know there are things u may not wanna see but remember the conditions in these poor parts!) #humantrafficking #antihumantrafficking #moderndayslavery #pacificlinksfoundation #womenempowerment #Vietnam #EMPOWER
