Great news – Singapore Hawker Culture has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity!

Many have worked very hard to get our Hawker Culture inscribed on that list. Thank you all – it has been a long but fruitful journey.

The biggest thanks must go to the generations of hawkers for nourishing a nation’s stomach and spirits. This recognition would not have come without their sweat, toil and dedication to their profession.

It’s been two years since we announced our hawker culture bid for inclusion on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Delighted that their Evaluation Body has made a positive recommendation for us! We will know UNESCO’s final decision in December.

While the pandemic has hit our hawkers hard, many customers have rallied round their favourite hawkers to see them through. I hope this announcement will bring good cheer to our hawkers and their supporters.

Yishun Park Hawker Centre is one of the hawker centres I visit frequently. Many hawkers have become friends and it warms my heart when they can remember my orders. This personal touch puts a smile on my face every time.

One of the stalls I frequent is One Mouth Noodle. The owner, a former interior designer, is part of NEA’s Incubation Stall Program. When he first opened his stall, we interviewed him and he was so shy. Now, whenever we head over for dinner, he will always remember us and chat like old friends.

This is the beauty of hawker centres, isn’t it? Not only can we find delicious food here, but the place is always bustling with so much life and laughter. This is uniquely Singapore and something you can’t find anywhere else in the world.

Make a guess what these are? One look and you might think that they are artsy pendants, but these are ang ku kuehs that you can find in a hawker centre!

At Kueh Ho Jiak, the traditional ang ku kueh is given a makeover by young hawker Elizabeth and her mother. The mother and daughter duo did not come from a line of hawkers, they had to start from scratch. They went to learn the technicalities of the craft and tweaked them on the fly.

At Beauty World Food Centre, there’s an interesting East meets West dish that not many have tasted before — Ayam Buah Keluak burger!

Ryan and his wife, Clare, are the owners of Hambaobao who came up with a truly unique Singaporean burger. The Ayam Buah Keluak Burger combines minced chicken and buah keluak into a patty.
