The signing of the Taiwan Assurance Act 2020 as a part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act is an important step in institutionalizing US-Taiwan relations before the looming transfer of power in the United States. I thank Aleksandra Bielakowska of the Polish Press Agency for reaching out to us at Taiwan NextGen Foundation for comment.
In my interview with Ms. Bielakowska, I explain that this year's Taiwan Assurance Act has been welcomed with particular enthusiasm, as it brings a promise of greater stability amidst very turbulent times. Prior to the November elections, opinion polls consistently demonstrated that Taiwan was the only country in Asia-Pacific where respondents considered a potential reelection of Donald J. Trump as preferable to a victory of Joe Biden. The relations between our two Pacific democracies are seemingly at an apex, as evidenced by transfers of defense tools, high-level visits, and Congressional support for pro-Taiwan legislation. Our people have feared that the tide may turn. But the provisions of the Taiwan Assurance Act render our relations more stable and less susceptible to external factors, such as highly capricious US-China ties.
