AIT和TECRO在去年12月，簽署了一份重要的國際教育合作備忘錄，推廣中文與英文的語言學習、支持雙邊師生的交流、鼓勵美台大學之間的合作等。正如美國教育部副部長Zais所說：「具備多語能力的學生在職場和人生的許多面向上都更有優勢。我相信美台的教育夥伴關係能幫助更多學生在台灣和美國學習這些重要技能。」

U.S.-Taiwan cooperation is thriving on various topics. Taiwan is featured on the official blog of the U.S. Department of Education!

As you may have heard, on December 2, 2020, AIT and TECRO signed an important Memorandum of Understanding on international education cooperation. The MOU supports Mandarin and English language learning, student and teacher exchanges, university partnerships, and more! As Deputy Secretary Zais explained, “Students who speak several languages have an advantage in many aspects of their careers and lives. I am confident our partnership can help more students gain these important skills – on Taiwan and in the United States.”

⭐️五月是美國亞太裔傳統月！美國亞太裔外交官在美國國務院扮演重要的角色，在AIT的運作上更是如此！在整個五月份，我們將為各位介紹AIT亞太裔官員的重要貢獻。今天要和大家介紹的是政治組官員黃光杰(Jason Hwang)的故事。

📚雖然我在美國出生，但很幸運的是，我小時候有在台北的國語日報語文中心學了一個暑假的中文。在那之後，我就愛上了牛肉麵等台灣美食，可惜在美國和世界各地要找到這麼道地的台灣美食不是那麼容易。我的爸媽和老師非常用心良苦，但我還是不太會讀寫注音符號ㄅㄆㄇㄈ或漢字，不過這也給了我外派到台灣前，到美國在台協會華語學校學中文的機會！畢竟，少壯不努力，老大徒傷悲……不管派到世界哪裡, 我都很榮幸能夠代表美國，可是我的胃 (和我的心) 特別開心能回到台灣！-- 政治組官員黃光杰

⭐️It’s Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month! AAPI diplomats are a vital part of the State Department, and especially our AIT operation! All month, we look forward to featuring the important contributions of our AAPI colleagues. Today we are sharing Political Section Officer Jason Hwang’s story with you.

📚Being born in America, I was lucky to spend a summer of my childhood learning Chinese at the Mandarin Daily News Language Center in Taipei. I gained a lifelong love for Taiwanese snacks like beef noodles that has not always been easy to satisfy during my years in the United States and around the world. Despite the best efforts of my teachers and parents, I did not gain a lasting capacity to read or write in either phonetics (ㄅㄆㄇㄈ) or Chinese characters (漢字). Happily, this meant I was asked to study at AIT's Chinese Language and Area Studies School before beginning my assignment. After all, 少壯不努力 老大徒傷悲 (If you don’t work hard when you’re young, your life will be much harder when you’re old). I am proud to represent the United States no matter where I serve but my stomach (and heart) are particularly thrilled to be back in Taiwan. -- AIT Political Officer Jason Hwang

The other day I went into a bunch of Chinese restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese). It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions — both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! The other day we white guys who speak perfect Chinese went out to NYC’s Chinatown to the nail salon. They were “gossiping” about us (in a loving way!), not realizing we spoke Mandarin, and then we totally shocked them by switching to Chinese! We ended up having a really deep and interesting conversation with them in Mandarin and the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese.

So to find out what they are REALLY saying about you at Asian nail salons…just watch the video! It was a funny prank / social experiment but also a really meaningful experience. Plus of course it’s interesting if you’re interested in language learning!

The other day I went into a bunch of typical American Chinese takeout restaurants as an ordinary but kinda clueless white guy and ordered food in fluent Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fuzhounese). Most American Chinese takeout restaurants like this are run by people from China’s Fujian province, so it was fun for them to hear me speak their native but fairly rare language of Fuzhounese!

It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions — both the waiters and the other patrons in these NYC Chinatown restaurants were totally shocked! Thanks everyone for supporting me on my language learning journey!!!
