Selama dua hari saya telah berkunjung Long Busang, sebuah kampong yang terpencil di pedalaman Sarawak. Perjalanan lapan jam lebih dari Bintulu dan menaiki bot dari Bakun.
Walaupun jauh di pedalaman, orang Long Busang dari suku kaum Kenyah cukup mesra.
Ini gambar pahlawan dari Long Busang. Cuma dia gelap sikit dan seluar dia macam tak ikut spec betul.
This Orang Ulu headgear was a gift for me given by my state of Sarawak. I asked Larissa Ping of its specific name and she says in Kenyah it’s called ‘Tapung Se’’.

I know that the headgear was an antique and it was too precious to just be stuffed in a suitcase so I carried it with me proudly. 💛
This remains one of my favourite photos because that was what my life was at the time. In and out of planes and airports.
I believe I was leaving Kuching from performing at the Rainforest Festival that year, or perhaps a speaking event but don’t remember where I was off to next.
My memory has been failing me a lot these days, I often don’t remember where I’ve been but I will always remember where I’m from and the further I go, the stronger my pride.

When we talk about "heritage", it's not just about songs, beads, costumes, and stories. We inherit NATURE too. And we will also pass on NATURE to future generations.
"Pemung Jae" is a Kenyah folk song passed to me by sape' master Mathew Ngau Jau. The old song speaks of being together with friends, by the river, the river that gives us so many resources, and life.
Filmed in Klang Valley, Malaysia, this video is dedicated to our Rivers across the world.

Liling is the unofficial 'anthem' of the Orang Ulu (upriver people) of Sarawak. Liling means to turn around, and so during the chorus, people will dance in circles. People take turns to sing the verses, which are made up on the spot based on the occasion of the gathering.
I call this the 'traditional version' because I usually play it in a medley of two song (Liling & Pemung Jae)
"Datun Julud" means "long dance" in Dayak Kenyah language, "Hivan Joh" in Kayan, and "Arang Kadang" in Kelabit. It is traditionally danced by a group of ladies on ceremonious occasions, by the Orang Ulu people of Borneo
