It is Day 20 of Myanmar under the military coup. This is the third coup that has happened since the British gave up power in 1948 and as a country, we are pretty worn out. Our country’s infrastructures are not designed for prolonged fighting especially in the middle of a pandemic.
We have extremely fragile banking, transportation, and medical systems in place even before the coup and pandemic. I dare not to imagine what the future holds for the country after everything is over. How do we begin again? How do we regain the trust of foreign investors? And trust that the military would not go rogue again? These are all the questions that keep us awake at night.
We do not have any answers right now — because we are living moments by moments. As a middle-class citizen in Myanmar, I have a safety net during these times. I have a roof over my head and three meals a day which the majority of the civil servants on strike are risking. These people are the real troopers and it is time we realize that real heroes are always the ones in disguise. And I question myself every night if I could give up everything in my life to fight a war?
Before February 1st, we had so many dreams simply because we could. We dare to dream of futures in which every citizen lives above the poverty lines — it is a difficult thing but at least we were working towards it. We had dreams to fight COVID-19 and open up businesses again. And the dream that our voices were being heard through the democratically elected representatives.
I grew up under a military dictatorship and moved to the States for college at 18. After spending a couple of years in the “land of the free,” I tasted freedom. There were a few restrictions on personal freedom when I moved back to Myanmar in 2017 since it was still a quasi-civilian government. On February 1st, 2021, all my personal rights were stripped away without any proper cause. How do they expect us to go back into the dark after tasting freedom? We are put under martial laws, unexpected internet cut-offs, and threats of violence.
We are simply scared when night falls. In the dark, the country is lawless. Thugs roam around, people get arrested, fires start, and small cities could be under attack by the defenders of the country.
This coup takes a big toll on our mental health. We are afraid — but we all have this little hope in us. Everyone I know is working towards achieving this little hope. All we want is to get our country back. The fragile banking, economy, and transportation. We want to fix those fragile things through our chosen representatives. We will happily accept this mess and build the country again. We want to make sure our next generation could thrive and not take democracy for granted.

===============
===================
=========================
I am one of the protester. We have a group of classmates, we are all teenagers, we went out not for posting on social media, there was no peer pressure. Why did I not are about my personal safety? Why did I not care about anything and went to the protest? Why did I do that? Because we love this place called Hong Kong. We believed that Hong Kong was, perhaps, a liberal and free place still. Government would listen to our voices, but that is not the case.
June 9, 1.03 million went on the street [and protested], [Chief Executive] Lam-Cheng still doesn’t give a damn. None of the opinions expressed by the protesters matter to her.
I said: Fine, you think that we would retreat. We didn’t have the stamina to go out again.
At the beginning, I was too afraid to [go on the street]. I stood at the overpass and looked at the people on the street from above. I was not courageous enough to go down the overpass at first. I found myself a coward, I felt so helpless. On the overpass, I saw that there was an elderly woman on the other side. She is at least seventy or eighty years old, but she was on the street. For what? Not for herself. [*sob*]
I am a secondary school student, with a group of classmates. WE DID NOTHING VIOLENT! Police kept shooting us with tear-gas. Do you know where I was? I was at the [officially assigned] demonstration area.
One tear-gas bomb was not enough. We [the protesters] were all shouting: Stop […] We are retreating. Please stop. We are retreating. Why were you [the police] still using tear-gas bomb at us? Do you know how many youngsters were there? How many elderlies? How many social workers? How many Christians? They came out. [*sob*]
[I am 16 years-old]. I have been in Hong Kong for 16 years. It is not a long time. But I have come to learn the Core Values of Hong Kong. We have freedom. We have the freedom to resist even when we are oppressed. The freedom to assembly. The freedom to speak to anyone who would listen. But in reality, these things don’t exist. All the things we thought we have, all the things I knew were lies.
All my classmates are good people. They don’t care about themselves, they protect all their female classmates first. I really do appreciate them. Do you know how old they are? We are all at the same age. Do you know how guilty I feel right now?
Perhaps you have no idea how having tear gas shot at you feel like. It hurt so much and so badly. It feels like your whole body is on fire.
As I was retreating, I saw all those at the frontline. They were hurt so badly they [fell to the ground / could not stand up]. Even when I was inside the shopping mall [nearby], I could still smell the tear gas. We sat on the ground and we could do nothing but shout: is there water? There were people who did so much than I did, they were still asking me if I need water to clean myself or wash my eyes? I will remember them for life.
But the things I couldn’t forget the most wasn’t how horrible the tear gas felt, how my eyes hurt, how I couldn’t breath. I couldn’t forget the many protesters, people who were hurt, people fell unconscious - they did nothing but shouting . How come freedom of speech has become so costly in Hong Kong? How come expressing our dissatisfaction has become a crime?

Video Title: The Incredible Japanese Prison Break
"Aomori, Japan. 1936. Prisoner Yoshie Shiratori had had enough. He was forced to confess to a murder he did not commit, falsely imprisoned in Aomori Prison, beaten and tortured every night by prison guards, and, now worse, prosecutors were seeking the death penalty. In his mind, it was time to go; but Aomori Prison wasn’t the easiest to escape. Regardless, Yoshie Shiratori had nothing to lose, and so at 5:30 am he made his move. He knew there would be a 15 minute gap in the patrol time as he had studied the guards’ routine for months; and when the coast was clear, he pulled out a metal wire (which he had smuggled in from the bathhouse) and started to pick the lock. (This was originally the metal support ring that was wrapped around the bathing buckets inmates used to wash themselves). His hands were stiff from the wintry cold, but after a few minutes of picking, he had success, and his cell door swung open. But he wasn’t out of the woods yet, because there were more locked doors ahead. He knew he only had a few minutes left before the guards would return, and so he wasted no time attempting to pick his way through the remaining security doors. Now fortunately for him, he was able to make it out of the facility, but the bad news was that he was only halfway to freedom. You see, he was still well within the search perimeter, which meant at any moment the alarm could go off and he’d still be caught. At 5:45am the guards returned, peering into his cell; and this is what they saw - Shiratori sound asleep in his futon bed..."
