1. 將一斤片糖放入細煲,加入一杯清水,用慢火煮溶成糖水
Pour a cup of water into a pot and add 1 catty(一斤) OR 600 gram of brown slab sugar. Heat until the brown slab sugar melts completely.

2. 將一斤糯米粉及1/4斤粘米粉放入大碗,慢慢倒入糖水
Mix 1 catty OR 600 gram of sticky rice flour (糯米粉) and 1/4 catty OR 150 gram of rice flour (粘米粉). Slowly add the molten brown slab sugar.

3. 攪拌成年糕漿
Mix until the batter is smooth

4. 加入三茶匙食用油及三茶匙䶨水
Add 3 teaspoons of oil and 3 teaspoons of 鹼水 (it is edible potassium carbonate sold in the wet market - optional) into the batter

5. 將年糕漿倒入糕盆,大火蒸兩小時
將筷子插入年糕內,筷子不黏年糕即可
Pour the batter into a round cake pan. Steam for 2 hours.

6. 年糕上掃上一層食用油
Spread a layer of oil onto the Chinese New Year Cake. ----------------------------------------------
7. 於年糕中央放上一粒紅棗作裝飾。
Add a red date as topping.(Everything has to be red in the Lunar New Year 😝) ----------------------------------------------

【Homemade Turnip cake by Dad 😆 蘿蔔糕食譜 Recipe Below 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻】

1. 蘿蔔刨皮。
Prepare and peel two turnips

2. 將兩條蘿蔔切成粗絲。
Cut the turnips into long thin strips
----------------------------------------------
3. 將三隻冬菇,適量蝦米,半條臘肉及兩條臘腸切粒後炒香。
Stir fry 3 chinese mushrooms (washed, soaked and chopped), dried shrimps (washed, soaked and chopped), dried pork belly (half) and 2 dried sausages.

4. 將蘿蔔絲煮軟並加入一粒冰糖。
Cook the Turnip strips until they are soft, add a piece of rock sugar

5. 在煮軟蘿蔔絲內加入炒香的冬菇,臘肉,蝦米及臘腸。加入適量鹽及胡椒粉。
Add the chinese mushrooms, dried shrimps, dried pork belly and dried sausages. Add a teaspoon of salt.

6. 慢慢加入已攪勻的粘米粉 (400g) 及鷹栗粉 (20g)。
Mix 400g of rice flour and 20g of corn starch. Slowly add them into the turnip strips.

7. 將蘿蔔糕倒入糕盆,大火蒸約一小時。筷子不黏即可。
Pour the batter into a round cake pan. Steam for 2 hours.

I get so excited whenever I see something Hong Kong!
This is my first time to see the whole baking process of wife cake 老婆餅, a traditional Cantonese sweet pastry stuffed with almond and melon paste. And that was probably the hottest wife cake that I ever had.
Shun Heung Yuan 順香園餅家, a 35-year old cake shop in Hong Kong, is where you can meet old Chinese pastry masters!
The thing I love about this cake shop is you can see the whole making process of pastries while you are shopping!
(By the way, this cake shop is situated inside an industrial building 🤯)
There are more than 20 types of freshly baked Cantonese pastries in the shop and my favourite are certainly the wife cake 老婆餅 and Ma Jai 馬仔, a Chinese-style Rice Krispies bar.
Photos are allowed. But make sure you don’t take photos of the pastry masters and ask for their permission first 😊. The pastry masters are happy to share everything they know about chinese pastries with you 😋.
