#SeeWhatShow: Mulan
Besides the lack of travel, this year has been marked by the lack of cinema-going too. Blockbuster movies have been delayed or pushed back. Cinemas were closed. We’ve been also locked down.
So it was with some excitement that the Wife and I went to watch the premiere of Disney’s Mulan. Tenet was the first movie we watched post-circuitbreaker but Mulan was the one we understood.
It was also very enjoyable and I’m glad we caught it on the big screen. I think the US is getting it on Disney+ (you buy it from the streaming service) but we get to see it on the big screen here.
It is quite the spectacle.
No, there is no Mushu. No, there is no cutesy humour. No, there isn’t even any singing. Just leave your animated Mulan expectations at the door and watch this as a different movie. A little more serious. A lot of pomp and grandeur.
You can tell Disney has put in a lot of effort to get the costumes and the sets right. The kungfu wire work is also spot on.
Where you might get a little thrown off is the Chinese-accented English and the English-accented pronunciation of Chinese names. Some of the over-emphasis on morals and love of country can also feel a little cringey and smell a little of propaganda.
But, get past some of the cringe and you will find a kickass movie about a kickass heroine who, well, kicks ass.
I like that the focus is on Mulan herself. The romance angle from the animated movie was played down too. This is all about a young woman’s journey to finding her place in a male-dominated society. And you will cheer her as she does it.
This is one of the best animated to live-action movie adaptions that Disney has ever done. This is no meh Cinderella or Lion King.
Think of it as a tribute to all the Chinese wuxia period movies you’ve watched before. Sure, we are familiar with the tropes and may find it hokey seen through the lens of Hollywood, like we did when Crouching Tiger came out. But I think it’s a credible effort and enjoyable for the family.
Go see it in the cinema. Oh and see if you can recognize Jet Li.

different pronunciation in english 在 Eric's English Lounge Facebook 八卦
https://youtu.be/VexrmTacOAA
I would like to see a great deal more CAUTION, a more SELECTIVE EXERCISE of your enormous range of weapons you’ve got, and more BRAINS AND FEET — preferably Vietnamese brains and feet — rather than more power and GADGETRY.
•Brains and feet, rather than gadgetry — 這邊也很巧妙,把當地的人,用 brains and feet 來代表,更能強調他們的長處,比 “local people” 更能夠有說服力。
I would like…
… to see a great deal more caution…
… a more selective exercise of…
your…
enormous range of weapons you’ve got, and uh…
more brains and feet…
You MUST demonstrate, and which…
I’ve really come here to understand better…
is whether YOU…
as a PEOPLE…
have got that resolution
that stamina, that perseverance, AND…
most important of all…
infinite patience, AND…
the capacity to hold back…
your desire to settle this quickly and get it over with, because this is a very different kind of war…
The other side is not in uniform. You are.
★★★★★★★★★★★★
📌 Speaking the Audience’s Language
如果他說的是 highly-educated English,西方聽眾會比較覺得 ah he’s on our level!
I am not given to making sense out of life — or coming up with some grand narrative on it — other than to measure it by what you think you want to do in life.
他不是寫 “I don’t try to make sense of life”,而是 “I am not given to making sense out of life”。
https://youtu.be/bGMKiv8-bzM
I hope to tell you what merger means, why it’s good for all of us, why it’s coming, and why some people are deliberately creating trouble and difficulty…
Presentality! Learn from their experience and expertise!
★★★★★★★★★★★★
It’s not just about speaking. It’s about speaking to achieve your goals.

Some of you were confused when I said that I was taking Ancient Greek at school. A few people mixed up Ancient Greek and Modern Greek. Well, there is actually a difference between the two! Ancient Greek, the one that I’m studying at school, is an earlier form of the Greek spoken today, spoken at around the 5th century BC. You could compare it with the variant of English spoken at the time of Shakespeare - although much earlier! Even though it’s a linguistic subject, we cover elements of Ancient Greek history as well.
Modern Greek, however, is different from its ancient relative - there are differences in grammar and pronunciation, amongst a few other things. It’s the form of Greek that’s spoken in today’s world. But although Ancient Greek is no longer spoken anywhere in the world, it can be a very useful language to learn. Quite a few English words are derived from Ancient Greek (if you’re going into biology or medicine, it’ll be quite useful). For me, a linguist, the constructions and grammar of the language are good challenges for the brain, one of the reasons why I chose Ancient Greek over other modern languages. And of course, learning another language can be great fun!
So before you go to assume that learning a 'dead language' is useless, remember: there are quite a few hidden benefits to it!

Hello Internet, my name is Ray, I'm a YouTuber from Taiwan, and this is an open letter to the World Health Organization.
Dear WHO, I’m not sure if you’ve noticed, but a lot of your members have been voicing support for the inclusion of Taiwan in the WHO.
Since the novel coronavirus outbreak was designated as a global health emergency, core WHO members and their heads of state and officials, including Justin Trudeau, Shinzo Abe, 7 American senators, and the European Union (and more), have called on you to grant at the very least observer status to Taiwan. Having said that, I feel like as a Taiwanese citizen, it’s imperative that we also speak up for ourselves.
Disease knows no boundaries. Taiwan’s participation in the WHO is crucial not just to Taiwan but also to the world. A concerted, global effort is the only way to ensure the health and welfare of everyone. The coronavirus that began in Wuhan, China, has already spread to other regions and countries, excluding Taiwan could make it a "blind spot" in the international response to the disease.
Additionally, back in 2003, the SARS outbreak resulted in 73 lives taken in Taiwan. If we had been included in the WHO back then, we would’ve had better understanding of the virus and maybe, who knows, more lives could have been saved.
But we’re not just here playing the victim here, Taiwan can help. Taiwan’s healthcare system is lauded as among the best in the world, and our medical standards are generally on par with top global countries. The inclusion of Taiwan in world health assemblies and events would enable it to share its invaluable experiences in combating SARS, Ebola and other pandemics, helping countries around the world, including China. With our universal health coverage, health emergency response, and professional medical training, Taiwan can benefit the world.
Now you might say, Taiwan’s already represented by China in the WHO, but Taiwan’s geological separation and its independent disease control system and air traffic management provide further justification to why the WHO must take different approaches to Taiwan and China amid the coronavirus outbreak.
Also, given our proximity, Taiwan is at the very frontline battling this coronavirus from China, and we are skilled, determined, and equipped with past experiences combating different viruses. Excluding us is putting close to 24 million lives and the global population at risk.
As a Taiwanese, as a member of the global community, I am asking you on behalf of the world to include Taiwan. By allowing our participation in the WHO, you will be realizing the organization’s vision of health as a basic human right and health for all without exception. Thank you for your time.
