confused between the two但故事還未講完But the story doesn’t end here明年是2017年，香港主權移交給中國的20週年Next year 2017, it would be 20 years since Hong Kong’s turnover to China你大概會以為這段時間香港和中國會越走越近You would’ve thought that during this time, Hong Kong and China would’ve grown closer to one another但事實卻非如此But it has not been so.香港人和中國人反而變得越來越有隔膜If anything, we’ve grown to be more and more apart.---沒錯 在過去20年Yes it is watch那是香港人少有地為國家感到自豪的一刻It was one of those rare moments where Hong Kong people share the same sense of pride as the rest of China不過 現實歸現實But the Olympics is one thing, and reality is why they are called pharmacies因為他們主要不是售賣藥物，而是奶粉和尿片…because mainly they don’t sell medicine, they sell baby milk formula and diapers. 事實上 大陸人不相信中國製的貨品The thing is, mainland Chinese don’t trust their own stuff因為在中國任何東西都有可能是假的 那裡沒有質量管制或食物安全…because you can get fake everything in China; there’s no quality control or food safety所以很多中國人都會來香港買日用品 如奶粉So many Chinese come to Hong Kong to buy daily stuff and one product that has always been in high demand is baby milk formulas香港部份地區甚至出現奶粉短缺的問題It has got to a point where the supply became so tight that there is a shortage of milk formulas in some areas of Hong Kong如果你住在歐洲或美國，這情況可能難以置信If you are living in the Europe or the US, this might sound really hard to believe嬰兒配方奶粉和尿片！但這是真的，這切切實實在香港發生Milk formula and diapers, but it’s true, it is what’s serious anti-Chinese hype in Hong Kong很多香港人都不歡迎中國人 只想他們離開Many local people are furious and just want them to go away但對我來說 問題永遠出於制度But to me, the real problem always lies in the system我不想將整件事歸疚於中國人身上Conceptually, I hate to put my frustration upon the Chinese people 因為要來港購物以保障自身安全並不是他們的錯Because it’s not their fault that they have to buy things from Hong Kong to ensure that they are safe但制度上出了甚麼問題？But what about the system? 關於這個制度我簡述如下There’s a lot I can say about this system, but for now I will just simplify it as follows在制度頂端有中國共產黨，之後有香港政府和立法會中的建制派At the top of the system we have the Chinese Communist Party, then we have the Hong Kong government and the pro-establishment camp in our Legislative council簡單來說，這個制度一直想將香港變成中國的一個普通城市In short, this system has been trying to turn Hong Kong into just another city of China並且破壞一國兩制的原則…and damaging the core principle of “One Country, Two Systems”---很長時間以來，香港人一直在爭取民主For a long time, Hong Kong people have been advocating for full democracy即是普選，可以提名和投票給我們自己的領袖（行政長官）That means universal suffrage with the right to nominate and elect our own leader, which in Hong Kong is called the Chief Executive根據基本法，我們有普選的權利According to the Basic Law, we have a legal right to universal suffrage.在過去20年，中國政府曾多次承諾香港人會有普選In the past 20 years, the Chinese government has assured Hong Kong several times that we are going to get universal suffrage但他們一直拖延實施普選的日期But they have been pushing back the date for it又推托說香港人未準備好，所以2007年和2012年都沒有普選。…and kept saying Hong Kong wasn’t ready, so we didn’t get it in 2007 and 2012但北京承諾香港2017年可普選特首But the Chinese has set a timeline for it, and they said Hong Kong would eventually get universal suffrage by 2017結果，2014年8月31日，北京說And guess what, on 31st August 2014, the Chinese said好，你可以有你想要的普選，但我們需要增加幾個條件Alright you are going to get your universal suffrage, but we are going to have to impose some conditions首先，行政長官必需愛國First the Chief Executive must be someone who is patriotic to China第二，候選人需要先得到現有的行政長官選舉委員會的提名 (絕大部分都是親中代表)Secondly candidates are going to be nominated by the current Election Committee, which consists (mostly) of 1200 pro-Beijing representatives最後，無論誰勝出選舉，都要得到中國政府委任才可成為行政長官Lastly, whoever wins the popular election must be appointed by the Chinese government所以他們就是說，好，你們可以普選，但我們保留剔除任何人的權利So basically they are saying, alright you can get your vote but we reserve the right to screen out anyone that we dislike---北京公布831決定後，香港人當然很憤怒After this was announced by the Chinese officials, we were bloody furious所以我們展開了一連串抗議行動，要求真普選So we began a series of protests demanding for “true universal suffrage” 我們一直以來都覺得普選就是For years we have always thought universal suffrage means just that一個民主及公開的選舉The right to vote in a democratic and open election但是中共卻憑空製造了完全相反的東西But the CCP managed to create something that is completely contrary to that結果，大學生開始罷課As a result, university students like myself began boycotting classes並參與在金鐘香港政府總部外舉行的集會…and attended gathering outside the Hong Kong government headquarters in Admiralty to protest這演變成持續79天的佔領金鐘、銅鑼灣和旺角的運動This has then turned into a 79-days long widespread occupy movement in streets of Admiralty, Causeway Bay and Mongkok期間警察使用催淚彈和胡椒噴霧來驅散我們，我們即用雨傘作盾During this time, police has used tear gas and pepper spray to try to get rid of us and we used umbrellas as shield解釋了為什麼這叫雨傘運動或雨傘革命That’s why this is called the Umbrella Movement or Umbrella Revolution我個人不喜歡稱之為革命，因為革命通常與激進的改變有關Personally I don’t like to call it a revolution, because revolution is often associated with some sort of radical change但對於我們來說，79天佔領街頭後，仍毫無成果But for us, after 79-days of occupying the streets, nothing has changed.到今天為止，一切維持原狀──沒有行政長官普選So to this day, the status quo remains – there is no universal suffrage for our Chief Executive election---但是為何我們這麼想要普選？But why do we want universal suffrage so much? 你要明白，我們的制度一直都有缺陷Well you have to understand that our governmental system has always been institutionally flawed一般當我們提到三權分立時，有行政、立法和司法三個機關Usually when we talk about the Separation of Powers, we have the Executive, the Legislative and the Judiciary這三個機關本應互相制衡，沒有人能夠掌控一切的權力They are meant to act as checks and balances of each other so no one gets too much power因為正如英國的阿克頓男爵所言：…because as Lord Acton famously said, 「權力導致腐敗，絕對權力導致絕對腐敗。」“Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”我們不但行政長官是經由1200人的小圈子挑選 當中大部份為親中人士Not only is our leader of the executive selected by a small-group of 1,200 voters – the majority of whom are pro-Beijing我們連立法會也不能全部直選We also don’t get to vote entirely for our Legislative Council事實上，我們只能直選立法會的一半議員In fact, only half of our legislators get directly elected by us另外一半是由所謂的功能組別選出The other half are elected through the so-called Functional Constituencies香港一共有28個功能組別There are 28 different functional constituencies, representing different seats in our Legislative council原意是為了讓香港不同的界別和工種都能對政府政策有話語權Originally this meant to provide different professions across Hong Kong to have a say in government politics---但這個制度本質上存在缺陷But there’s a huge problem – this system is fundamentally flawed最為人爭議的是，這制度容許公司和專業團體登記為選民Most controversially, it allows companies and professional bodies to register as voters製造了一個漏洞讓大公司同時間可持有多張選票So this creates a loophole where big business can hold multiple votes at the same time以飲食業為例，大公司可以登記每間分店為一個選民Consider the catering constituency, big restaurant companies can register each of their outlets as voters像大家樂這種大型的連鎖餐廳So big food chain like Café De Carol不，這不是一間法國菜餐廳，這是港式快餐店Nope, it is not a French restaurant – it’s a fast food Chinese restaurant這些大公司可以登記上一百張選票Something like that can register up to a hundred votes if they like另外，不同功能組別之間也有很大差異Also there is a huge discrepancy between different functional constituencies例如，在衛生服務界，有37,000個登記選民，但在保險界卻只有130個For example, in the Health Services sector, there are 37,000 registered voters, whereas in Insurance, there are only 130 registered voters這個差異根本不合邏輯 為甚麼有些行業會得到更廣泛的代表？There is really no logical explanation for it – why are some industry represented more fairly while others are not事實上，近半功能組別都是自動當選的，大部份的席位都由建制派瓜分In fact, almost half of the functional constituencies are uncontested and most of the seats are dominated by the pro-establishment camp.---這有甚麼實際意義？But what is the actual significance? 當立法會議員自行提出草案和議案時，我們有所謂的分組點票You see, when individual legislators propose bills and motions, we have a split-voting system意思是，在草案通過之前，…meaning that to be able to pass the bill需要得到地區直選和功能組別兩方面均過半數支持It requires a majority vote in both the geographical constituency – those directly elected by us – and the functional constituency所以就算一個草案得到總共過半數的支持So we can have a bill that is supported by the majority of the legislators但仍會因為在功能組別方面未過半數而流產But fails nonetheless because it did not pass the functional constituency理論上，只要控制了功能組別的半數就可以否決任何議員草案或議案So in effect, you only need half of the votes within the Functional Constituency to reject all bills and motions put forward by individual legislators. 但政府提出的卻不一樣，But the same does not apply to government bills只需要取得過半數的支持就可以了For government bills, you only need to get a majority from all the legislators as a whole所以有時候會有一些政府議案原本被大部分直選議員反對So sometimes we have bills that are opposed by the majority of those legislators directly elected by us但基於功能界別大部份贊成而通過…but nonetheless get through because of the functional constituency這個制度的問題在於政府和大商家會有勾結的誘因The major problem of this is that it creates an incentive for the Government and big business players to side with each other一方面，有功能組別的支持，政府可以否決所有由議員提出的議案On one hand with the help of functional constituency, the Government has an effective veto over all motions in the Legislative council另一方面，商界自己也可以否決不符合他們商業利益的議案，如最低工資和標準工時…while on the other hand businesses can reject motions that are contrary to their interests such as minimum wage and standard working hours---因此，行政機關在立法方面有很大的控制權Because of this, the executive has a lot of control over our Legislative Council他們很多時候也會做很多與市民意願相反的決定And they often make decisions that are contrary to public opinions由於選舉制度上的缺陷，我們也不能有效地向行政機關問責And because of the fundamental flaws in our electoral systems, there is no way we could hold our executive accountable in any shape or form你也必須明白 香港政府和和中國政府之間的關係Conceptually you also have to understand the relationship between our executive and the Chinese government你也許會認為，在一國兩制原則下，香港政府和中國政府是分開的It’s easy to say, well the Hong Kong government is separate from the Chinese government because of the principle of one country two systems我們可以實行自己的政策，這不是中國政府的問題，而是香港政府本身的問題And we can implement our own policies so it’s not the fault of the Chinese government but of our own government也許是吧，但我們的選舉制度確保香港行政長官是忠於北京的That is partly true, but remember we have a system as such where our Chief Executive is guaranteed to be pro-Beijing因此香港政府和中國政府密不可分That’s why it has an incentive to side with the Chinese government---以現任行政長官梁振英為例 他自上任以來都在替北京擦鞋For example, our current Chief Executive, CY Leung, he has been keen to please Beijing wherever possible他重視中國的利益多於香港的利益There are lots of policies where he appeared to have put Mainland’s interest above Hong Kong’s interest如2012年，政府打算推行強制國民教育For example, in 2012, the government tried to introduce mandatory National Education classes想加強學生的國家認同感…so that students can strengthen their national identity about China但這被大眾反對，因為很多人都擔心這是偏向共產黨的洗腦教育This was met with huge public protests as many fear that it would simply be a brainwashing curriculum biased towards the Chinese Communist Party其他情況還包括否決香港電視的牌照申請，梁振英的5,000萬元賄款醜聞等等There are also other instances such as the rejection of HKTV, CY Leung’s $50 million corrupt scandal – etc我們極不滿意現在的政府Basically, we are extremely unsatisfied with our current Government制度本身容許我們的政府恣意妄為The system itself allows for our government to potentially be arbitrary and self-serving而我們沒有有效的方法向政府問責And there’s no way we could hold our government accountable in any shape or forms這就是我們想要普選的原因：我們想選擇自己的領袖That’s why we want universal suffrage so much – so that we can choose our own leader當然，這不會在一夕間解決所有問題，但會是一個通往更民主和平的制度的開端。Yes it won’t solve everything but it will be a start to a more democratic and fair system---雨傘運動是前所未有的The Umbrella Movement was a first of its kind雨傘運動一開始十分和平It started off extremely peacefully強調非暴力、理性、愛與和平等等With an emphasis on being non-violent, rational, love and peace and all that但隨着時間經過，梁振英政府拒絕回應But as it went on, the CY Leung’s government managed to remain unresponsive過了兩個月，人們都不知道要怎麼辦Two months into occupying the streets, people simply didn’t know what to do而示威者和警察之間的關係則每況愈下And the relationship between the protesters and the police got worse by days有警察使用暴力對待示威者There was alleged police violence其中有七個警察將一個示威者拖到暗角施暴Seven police officers took a protester to a dark corner and beat him up無可避免地，雨傘運動最終演變成示威者和警察之間暴力的衝突──市民被打、被捕Inevitably the movement turned into something more violent with protesters clashing with the police – people were beaten up and arrested. ---自雨傘運動以來，社會處於嚴重撕裂的狀態Since the Umbrella Movement, the society has been hugely divided市民對警察的信任度跌至新低Police confidence has gone to an all-time low一方面，我們發現和平的示威遊行再沒有用On one hand, we realize peaceful protest no longer does a damn thing, 另一方面，人們正在尋找抗衡警力的方法──亦即採取更激進的行動…while on the other hand, people are finding ways to counter police force – essentially resorting to more radical actions這也引致部份市民在意識形態上與傳統泛民主派分道揚鑣It also led to an ideological separation within the pro-democracy camp香港的傳統泛民主派視建設民主中國為己任Traditionally pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong felt it was their duty to build a democratic China他們其實比任何人都更愛中國If anything they are more patriotic to China than anyone他們是對六四天安門事件最大感觸的人They are the people who felt most strongly about stuff like Tiananmen Square但在過去20年，香港民主沒有寸進，也看不到中國民主化的希望But for the last 20 years, democracy has not been advanced for Hong Kong nor does it look likely for China所以有人開始說That’s why new advocates are saying, 建設民主中國是不切實際的Well there’s no real possibility of so-called building a democratic China我們要先自救We need to start rescuing ourselves first因此本土和香港獨立的概念開始萌芽，因為人們對一國兩制開始失去信心So, there emerges the idea of localism and Hong Kong independence because people are simply losing faith in the so-called One Country Two Systems.---這些社會不穩和躁動最終導致今年初在旺角發生的事件All this social unrest has led to what happened earlier this year in Mongkok那是農曆正月初一It was the first day into Chinese Lunar New Year; 街上有小販在賣熟食There were some street hawkers selling street food這些小販雖是無牌經營，但他們一向都在農曆新年頭幾天擺賣，賺幾個快錢They are unlicensed but that’s what they have always done in the first few days of Chinese New Year, just trying to make a few extra bucks這就像香港的小傳統It’s like a little local tradition in Hong Kong. 但今年警察突然執法，引發示威者與警察之間的衝突But somehow this time the police decided to confront them – which has led to protesters confronting the police突然間，小販擺賣演變成騷動，或暴亂，視乎你怎麼看Suddenly it has turned into a huge unrest, or riot, depending which side you are on街上有雜物起火，市民撿起磚和樽扔向警察There were fire on the street, people picking up bricks and bottles throwing at the police警察向天開了兩槍以鎮壓人群Two shots were fired in the air for crowd control這是香港二十年來都未見過的暴力It was violence on a scale that has never been seen in Hong Kong for the last 20 years的確 暴力的程度與本身的小販問題根本完全不相稱In no way was the violence proportional to the whole street food and street hawker issue但你必須明白背後的原因But you have to be able to understand it in the light of the whole circumstances那種自雨傘運動以來積累的憤怒和不滿The sort of anger that has been accumulated since the Umbrella Movement社會民怨達臨界點Social unrest is now at its highest point---雨傘運動後，各種事情由壞變更壞，北京加重了對香港的控制Things have gotten from bad to worse for Hong Kong since the Umbrella Movement. Beijing has tighten up control of Hong Kong我們曾經享有的自由受到嚴峻挑戰Our once enjoyed freedom has been put to some serious doubt去年，五個在香港出售中國敏感話題的書籍的書商消失了Five Hong Kong booksellers who sell sensitive stuff about the Chinese Communist Party went missing last year他們沒有任何出境記錄，憑空消失了There were no record of them going out of Hong Kong, and they just disappeared有好一段時間，沒有人知道他們到哪裡去了，然後……For a while no-one really knows where they went, and then…好像魔法一樣，他們出現在中國的電視台，承認他們所謂的罪行Like magic, there they are in Mainland China appearing on TV, confessing their guilt其他事情還包括廉政公署（香港引以為傲的反貪污機構）大地震Other stuff such as the ICAC, an anti-corruption body that we have always been proud of, has also been involved in some major shake-ups更近期的有立法會選舉有六位候選人被取消資格More recently, six candidates have been disqualified from running the Legislative Council election他們被取消資格的原因是因為他們提倡香港獨立They have been disqualified because they advocate for Hong Kong Independence沒有法例授權行政機關以政治原因篩選候選人There is nothing in the law that allows the administrative to screen out candidates running for the legislative council for political reason這根本違反言論自由That’s just simply grossly against freedom of speech---還記得四年前，港獨根本無人提及And remember, four years ago, Hong Kong independence was not even an idea to start with現在卻成長為一個熱議的社會話題，越來越多人支持香港獨立Now it has turned into a whole serious social movement – more and more people are turning to Hong Kong independence背後的原因？And the reason behind that? 不久之前有一個網上比賽，讓人用六個字寫悲慘故事。有人寫：A while back there was a post asking people to write sad stories in six words, and someone wrote this: 「一國，兩制，笑話。」“One Country, Two Systems, Just kidding.”這就是香港的現況And that pretty much sums it up for Hong Kong. 主權移交時，曾經有人承諾我們會有When Hong Kong got handed back over to China, we were guaranteed of all these things:言論自由、新聞自由和法治...the freedom of speech, the freedom of press and the rule of law但這些都一直被破壞But these things have been undermined hugely北京的訊息很清晰：The message from China is clear:你想要高度自治嗎？You want your high degree of autonomy and you want to feel special right?可是你只能在我容許的限度裡享有自由But you are only as free as we allow you to be這些自由是我給你們的，我現在要取回你也不能作聲We gave you that stuff so shut up if we want to take them back. Period.但事實上中國沒有給予我們自由But the truth is China didn’t give us freedom of speech\我們的人權都不是中國給予的You didn’t give us any of our fundamental rights. Berbalik pada topik utama. Dipendekkan cerita, dulu abang mayat adalah seorang Melayu yang agak malas untuk belajar bahasa Inggeris. Mungkin pada zaman itu, PM belum mewajibkan lagi pelajaran matematik dan sains dalam bahasa Inggeris. Lagipun pada masa itu belum ada internet, maka abang membuat endah tak endah dengan pentingnya BI (alasan semuanya itu).

Sehinggalah pada suatu hari, abang mayat melihat sekumpulan budak-budak Punk ketawa selepas membaca tulisan di dinding tandas terutama bila ada F word. Hal ini membuatkan abang iri hati dengan kelebihan ilmu mereka dan ditambah pula dengan ramainya pendosa dari luar negara yang datang ke Malaysia, maka abang memulakan langkah to improve my English sebagai salah satu kaedah yang lebih cepat dalam usaha menyelamatkan dunia. InshaAllah!

Bak kata pepatah:

Namun, oleh kerana abang dah lama habis sekolah dan datang dari keluarga yang kurang berkemampuan, maka abang belajar bahasa Inggeris dengan cara sendiri.

Sekarang, berkat usaha gigih, karisma, dedikasi dan integriti... err… kejap! Cerita ini bukanlah nak bercerita tentang abang yang pandai English gila babi, tapi cerita tentang bagaimana kita boleh cepat pandai dalam bahasa itu. Bila cepat tiada lagi istilah ‘hot-hot chicken shit’.

Kalau mahu belajar apa-apa bahasa, perkara pertama adalah korang kena ada kamus sendiri. Korang kena beli kamus dan bawa ke mana sahaja. Kalau boleh hafal satu kamus. Jika dulu nabi digelar ‘al-Quran bergerak’, sekarang giliran korang pula menjadi ‘kamus bergerak’. Jika ada kawan bertanya, what is inception? Terus dapat jawab, the Nolam film in the beginning blah blah...nampak tak?

Abang tahu, korang lemah BI bukan sebab bodoh tetapi korang tak tahu makna dan malas menghafal kerana dalam otak sudah ditanam ‘tak tahu English pun boleh hidup juga’ atau ‘malaikat dalam kubur tak tanya dalam bahasa Inggeris’. Bukankah dalam syurga lebih afdal cakap Arab? Arghh… malas nak cerita bab ni. Apa kata korang buang persepsi itu. Jangan jadikan itu alasan dan halangan.

Abang juga hairan kenapa pelajar dalam kelas English jarang bawa kamus. Masalah utama korang adalah tak tahu makna. Jadi, kalau tak tahu kenalah beli kamus dan hafal. Itu kunci yang pertama!

Dah ada kamus? Sekarang pergi beli buku nota untuk mencatat perkataan yang tak faham sewaktu membaca dan sebelum tidur hafal balik perkataan baru tadi.

Jadi korang akan ada dua buku, satu adalah kamus dan satu lagi buku nota yang akan menjadi kamus peribadi kerana korang akan mencatat perkataan baru dan tak tahu makna sahaja. Lama kelamaan, buku nota itu akan menjadi tebal dan korang dah tak perlu merujuk kamus lagi.

Untuk permulaan, Pilih bahn bacaan yang mudah dahulu. Kalau boleh ambil bahan bacaan budak tadika, baca dan faham makna keseluruhan cerita. Selepas itu, baca buku budak sekolah rendah pula, seterusnya buku sekolah menengah, lirik lagu, dialog film, dan akhirnya bacalah novel Inggeris sebelum membaca tafsir al-Quran dalam bahasa Inggeris.

Abang masih ingat apabila baru berkecimpung dalam dunia internet, rasa teruja sungguh. Begitu banyak sumber ilmu yang boleh kita terokai. Buka sahaja Wikipedia bermacam-macam cerita yang boleh dibaca. Cukuplah ada wiki.. Ilmu tak bertepi.. perghhh!

Waktu tu pun baru tahu apa itu Rotten Tomatoes, siapa Maddox, imdb info dan banyak lagi istilah baru. Tetapi sebelum itu kenalah pandai English dulu!

Bila dah pandai, boleh mula berniat untuk berdakwah ke peringkat antarabangsa. Bukan setakat dari Perlis sampai ke Sabah saja perjuangan kita. Think BIG dan langkah kita akan besar tapi jika Think SMALL maka langkah pun akan small.

Contoh: Jika korang fikir habis belajar nanti cukuplah dapat bekerja makan gaji di company yang stabil, maka perjalanan hidup akan terhad kepada kerja lapan jam sehari, lima hari seminggu dan menunggu dinaikkan pangkat. Tetapi jika korang fikir mahu berbisnes, mencipta produk, menggaji pekerja, kayakan diri sendiri dan membuat sesuatu yang bermakna, maka perjalanan hidup korang akan luas tiada penghujungnya. Tapi sebelum nak mendapatkan semua ini, kenalah pandai bahasa penjajah!

Jadi Abang memang rajin baca Wikipedia. Sambil baca sambil buka kamus, (sekarang dah ada Google Translate lagi senang). Selepas itu abang beli akhbar The Star, komik English (sekarang banyak yang online) dan juga kitab karangan Maulana Yusof Mutakhab, hadis versi English. Baca, baca dan baca…

Dari dulu abang suka tengok movie. Selesai tengok movie, abang akan baca sinopsis atau plot cerita dalam bahasa Inggeris untuk tahu penggunaan ayat. Mana yang tak faham abang akan catat dan hafal pada waktu makan. Begitu juga dengan komik Dragonball dan GTO, walaupun dah khatam dalam bahasa Melayu, abang baca pula versi bahasa Inggeris di internet.

Bila berjalan abang akan bawa kamus, (sekarang cuma perlu download aplikasi ke dalam telefon) jika nampak tulisan yang diconteng di dinding tandas awam dalam bahasa Inggeris, abang akan buka kamus dan ketawa dalam slang English jika lawak itu bermutu tinggi.

Untuk lebih cepat pandai, abang pinjam dua buku dari perpustakaan awam iaitu versi Melayu dan Inggeris. Kedua-dua buku itu abang akan baca dan bandingkan. Antara buku yang abang buat begitu adalah How To Win Friends & Influence People tulisan Dale Carnegie, Rich Dad Poor Dad dan banyak buku popular lain.

Untuk dapat saham di dunia dan akhirat pula, abang baca buku islamik yang ada dua versi BM dan BI seperti buku tafsir dan hadis. Kedua-dua buku itu abang baca dan bandingkan. Ada juga waktunya isteri abang akan membaca taklim dalam BM dan ayah semak dalam BI.

Begitu juga jika berurusan dengan orang Cina dan India, abang akan speaking dengan mereka. Malahan dengan kucing yang curi-curi masuk rumah pun abang akan halau dalam bahasa Inggeris. Malah sesekali bila berasmaradana dengan bini, kami speaking juga. Woha!

Dan pengalaman yang paling bernilai dalam hidup ialah ketika para pendakwah dari luar negara datang berdakwah di kampung maka abang akan menjadi pengalih bahasa untuk orang kampung yang tak tahu berbahasa Inggeris. Begitu lebih kurang…

Alkisahnya, Pada suatu hari, ketika rancak berborak dengan kawan-kawan dalam bahasa Inggeris yang berterabur tapi janji faham, maka terciptalah satu teori baru dalam hidup abang. Kawan-kawan abang bila belajar bahasa Inggeris mereka ada target atau measurement masing-masing dalam menentukan setakat mana pengetahuan mereka dalam bahasa ini telah tercapai.

Sesetengah mereka menganggap sudah pandai berbahasa Inggeris apabila boleh berborak dengan pelancong asing. Ada pula yang merasakan mereka sudah fasih berbahasa ini apabila boleh menyanyi lagu Inggeris dan pada masa sama faham maksud tersirat. Ada yang anggap mereka sudah pandai berbahasa Inggeris apabila boleh mengarang resume sehingga diterima kerja. Selain itu, ada yang menganggap mereka sudah fluent English apabila boleh membaca novel barat tanpa merujuk kamus dan lain-lain.

Tapi abang lain, abang ada target tersendiri dalam menentukan setakat mana pengetahuan ayah dalam Bahasa Inggeris tercapai iaitu…

Nobody’s Fool　　( January 2011 )Yoshitomo NaraDo people look to my childhood for sources of my imagery? Back then, the snow-covered fields of the north were about as far away as you could get from the rapid economic growth happening elsewhere. Both my parents worked and my brothers were much older, so the only one home to greet me when I got back from elementary school was a stray cat we’d taken in. Even so, this was the center of my world. In my lonely room, I would twist the radio dial to the American military base station and out blasted rock and roll music. One of history’s first man-made satellites revolved around me up in the night sky. There I was, in touch with the stars and radio waves.It doesn’t take much imagination to envision how a lonely childhood in such surroundings might give rise to the sensibility in my work. In fact, I also used to believe in this connection. I would close my eyes and conjure childhood scenes, letting my imagination amplify them like the music coming from my speakers. But now, past the age of fifty and more cool-headed, I’ve begun to wonder how big a role childhood plays in making us who we are as adults. Looking through reproductions of the countless works I’ve made between my late twenties and now, I get the feeling that childhood experiences were merely a catalyst. My art derives less from the self-centered instincts of childhood than from the day-to-day sensory experiences of an adult who has left this realm behind. And, ultimately, taking the big steps pales in importance to the daily need to keep on walking.While I was in high school, before I had anything to do with art, I worked part-time in a rock café. There I became friends with a graduate student of mathematics who one day started telling me, in layman’s terms, about his major in topology. His explanation made the subject seem less like a branch of mathematics than some fascinating organic philosophy.  My understanding is that topology offers you a way to discover the underlying sameness of countless, seemingly disparate, forms. Conversely, it explains why many people, when confronted with apparently identical things, will accept a fake as the genuine article. I later went on to study art, live in Germany, and travel around the world, and the broader perspective I’ve gained has shown me that topology has long been a subtext of my thinking. The more we add complexity, the more we obscure what is truly valuable. Perhaps the reason I began, in the mid-90s, trying to make paintings as simple as possible stems from that introduction to topology gained in my youth. As a kid listening to U.S. armed-forces radio, I had no idea what the lyrics meant, but I loved the melody and rhythm of the music. In junior high school, my friends and I were already discussing rock and roll like credible music critics, and by the time I started high school, I was hanging out in rock coffee shops and going to live shows. We may have been a small group of social outcasts, but the older kids, who smoked cigarettes and drank, talked to us all night long about movies they’d seen or books they’d read. If the nighttime student quarter had been the school, I’m sure I would have been a straight-A student. In the 80s, I left my hometown to attend art school, where I was anything but an honors student. There, a model student was one who brought a researcher’s focus to the work at hand. Your bookshelves were stacked with catalogues and reference materials. When you weren’t working away in your studio, you were meeting with like-minded classmates to discuss art past and present, including your own. You were hoping to set new trends in motion. Wholly lacking any grand ambition, I fell well short of this model, with most of my paintings done to satisfy class assignments. I was, however, filling every one of my notebooks, sketchbooks, and scraps of wrapping paper with crazy, graffiti-like drawings. Looking back on my younger days—Where did where all that sparkling energy go? I used the money from part-time jobs to buy record albums instead of art supplies and catalogues. I went to movies and concerts, hung out with my girlfriend, did funky drawings on paper, and made midnight raids on friends whose boarding-room lights still happened to be on. I spent the passions of my student days outside the school studio. This is not to say I wasn’t envious of the kids who earned the teachers’ praise or who debuted their talents in early exhibitions.  Maybe envy is the wrong word. I guess I had the feeling that we were living in separate worlds. Like puffs of cigarette smoke or the rock songs from my speaker, my adolescent energies all vanished in the sky. Being outside the city and surrounded by rice fields, my art school had no art scene to speak of—I imagined the art world existing in some unknown dimension, like that of TV or the movies. At the time, art could only be discussed in a Western context, and, therefore, seemed unreal. But just as every country kid dreams of life in the big city, this shaky art-school student had visions of the dazzling, far-off realm of contemporary art. Along with this yearning was an equally strong belief that I didn’t deserve admittance to such a world. A typical provincial underachiever!I did, however, love to draw every day and the scrawled sketches, never shown to anybody, started piling up. Like journal entries reflecting the events of each day, they sometimes intersected memories from the past. My little everyday world became a trigger for the imagination, and I learned to develop and capture the imagery that arose. I was, however, still a long way off from being able to translate those countless images from paper to canvas. Visions come to us through daydreams and fantasies. Our emotional reaction towards these images makes them real. Listening to my record collection gave me a similar experience. Before the Internet, the precious little information that did exist was to be found in the two or three music magazines available. Most of my records were imported—no liner notes or lyric sheets in Japanese. No matter how much I liked the music, living in a non-English speaking world sadly meant limited access to the meaning of the lyrics. The music came from a land of societal, religious, and subcultural sensibilities apart from my own, where people moved their bodies to it in a different rhythm. But that didn’t stop me from loving it. I never got tired of poring over every inch of the record jackets on my 12-inch vinyl LPs. I took the sounds and verses into my body. Amidst today’s superabundance of information, choosing music is about how best to single out the right album. For me, it was about making the most use of scant information to sharpen my sensibilities, imagination, and conviction. It might be one verse, melody, guitar riff, rhythmic drum beat or bass line, or record jacket that would inspire me and conjure up fresh imagery. Then, with pencil in hand, I would draw these images on paper, one after the other. Beyond good or bad, the pictures had a will of their own, inhabiting the torn pages with freedom and friendliness. By the time I graduated from university, my painting began to approach the independence of my drawing. As a means for me to represent a world that was mine and mine alone, the paintings may not have been as nimble as the drawings, but I did them without any preliminary sketching. Prizing feelings that arose as I worked, I just kept painting and over-painting until I gained a certain freedom and the sense, though vague at the time, that I had established a singular way of putting images onto canvas. Yet, I hadn’t reached the point where I could declare that I would paint for the rest of my life. After receiving my undergraduate degree, I entered the graduate school of my university and got a part-time job teaching at an art yobiko—a prep school for students seeking entrance to an art college. As an instructor, training students how to look at and compose things artistically, meant that I also had to learn how to verbalize my thoughts and feelings. This significant growth experience not only allowed me to take stock of my life at the time, but also provided a refreshing opportunity to connect with teenage hearts and minds. And idealism! Talking to groups of art students, I naturally found myself describing the ideals of an artist. A painful experience for me—I still had no sense of myself as an artist. The more the students showed their affection for me, the more I felt like a failed artist masquerading as a sensei (teacher). After completing my graduate studies, I kept working as a yobiko instructor. And in telling students about the path to becoming an artist, I began to realize that I was still a student myself, with many things yet to learn. I felt that I needed to become a true art student. I decided to study in Germany. The day I left the city where I had long lived, many of my students appeared on the platform to see me off. Life as a student in Germany was a happy time. I originally intended to go to London, but for economic reasons chose a tuition-free, and, fortunately, academism-free German school. Personal approaches coexisted with conceptual ones, and students tried out a wide range of modes of expression. Technically speaking, we were all students, but each of us brought a creator’s spirit to the fore. The strong wills and opinions of the local students, though, were well in place before they became artists thanks to the German system of early education. As a reticent foreign student from a far-off land, I must have seemed like a mute child. I decided that I would try to make myself understood not through words, but through having people look at my pictures. When winter came and leaden clouds filled the skies, I found myself slipping back to the winters of my childhood. Forgoing attempts to speak in an unknown language, I redoubled my efforts to express myself through visions of my private world. Thinking rather than talking, then illustrating this thought process in drawings and, finally, realizing it in a painting. Instead of defeating you in an argument, I wanted to invite you inside me. Here I was, in a most unexpected place, rediscovering a value that I thought I had lost—I felt that I had finally gained the ability to learn and think, that I had become a student in the truest sense of the word.But I still wasn’t your typical honors student. My paintings clearly didn’t look like contemporary art, and nobody would say my images fit in the context of  European painting. They did, however, catch the gaze of dealers who, with their antennae out for young artists, saw my paintings as new objects that belonged less to the singular world of art and more to the realm of everyday life. Several were impressed by the freshness of my art, and before I knew it, I was invited to hold exhibitions in established galleries—a big step into a wider world.The six years that I spent in Germany after completing my studies and before returning to Japan were golden days, both for me and my work.  Every day and every night, I worked tirelessly to fix onto canvas all the visions that welled up in my head. My living space/studio was in a dreary, concrete former factory building on the outskirts of Cologne. It was the center of my world. Late at night, my surroundings were enveloped in darkness, but my studio was brightly lit. The songs of folk poets flowed out of my speakers. In that place, standing in front of the canvas sometimes felt like traveling on a solitary voyage in outer space—a lonely little spacecraft floating in the darkness of the void. My spaceship could go anywhere in this fantasy while I was painting, even to the edge of the universe. Suddenly one day, I was flung outside—my spaceship was to be scrapped. My little vehicle turned back into an old concrete building, one that was slated for destruction because it was falling apart. Having lost the spaceship that had accompanied me on my lonely travels, and lacking the energy to look for a new studio, I immediately decided that I might as well go back to my homeland. It was painful and sad to leave the country where I had lived for twelve years and the handful of people I could call friends. But I had lost my ship. The only place I thought to land was my mother country, where long ago those teenagers had waved me goodbye and, in retrospect, whose letters to me while I was in Germany were a valuable source of fuel. After my long space flight, I returned to Japan with the strange sense of having made a full orbit around the planet. The new studio was a little warehouse on the outskirts of Tokyo, in an area dotted with rice fields and small factories. When the wind blew, swirls of dust slipped in through the cracks, and water leaked down the walls in heavy rains. In my dilapidated warehouse, only one sheet of corrugated metal separated me from the summer heat and winter cold. Despite the funky environment, I was somehow able to keep in midnight contact with the cosmos—the beings I had drawn and painted in Germany began to mature. The emotional quality of the earlier work gave way to a new sense of composure. I worked at refining the former impulsiveness of the drawings and the monochromatic, almost reverent, backgrounds of the paintings. In my pursuit of fresh imagery, I switched from idle experimentation to a more workmanlike approach towards capturing what I saw beyond the canvas. Children and animals—what simple motifs! Appearing on neat canvases or in ephemeral drawings, these figures are easy on the viewers’ eyes. Occasionally, they shake off my intentions and leap to the feet of their audience, never to return. Because my motifs are accessible, they are often only understood on a superficial level.  Sometimes art that results from a long process of development receives only shallow general acceptance, and those who should be interpreting it fail to do so, either through a lack of knowledge or insufficient powers of expression. Take, for example, the music of a specific era. People who lived during this era will naturally appreciate the music that was then popular. Few of these listeners, however, will know, let alone value, the music produced by minor labels, by introspective musicians working under the radar, because it’s music that’s made in answer to an individual’s desire, not the desires of the times. In this way, people who say that “Nara loves rock,” or “Nara loves punk” should see my album collection. Of four thousand records there are probably fewer than fifty punk albums. I do have a lot of 60s and 70s rock and roll, but most of my music is from little labels that never saw commercial success—traditional roots music by black musicians and white musicians, and contemplative folk. The spirit of any era gives birth to trends and fashions as well as their opposite: countless introspective individual worlds. A simultaneous embrace of both has cultivated my sensibility and way of thinking. My artwork is merely the tip of the iceberg that is my self. But if you analyzed the DNA from this tip, you would probably discover a new way of looking at my art. My viewers become a true audience when they take what I’ve made and make it their own. That’s the moment the works gain their freedom, even from their maker. After contemplative folk singers taught me about deep empathy, the punk rockers schooled me in explosive expression. I was born on this star, and I’m still breathing. Since childhood, I’ve been a jumble of things learned and experienced and memories that can’t be forgotten. Their involuntary locomotion is my inspiration. I don’t express in words the contents of my work. I’ll only tell you my history. The countless stories living inside my work would become mere fabrications the moment I put them into words. Instead, I use my pencil to turn them into pictures. Standing before the dark abyss, here’s hoping my spaceship launches safely tonight….
