The Beast Trail 2020 cancellation announcement

新北市政府認為新冠肺炎疫情嚴峻，擔心群聚造成防疫破口，強烈建議現階段大型活動取消或延期，又考慮5月份為最適合野獸山徑的季節，爾後可能會有颱風及雨季等不確定因素，故原定5/9-5/10野獸山徑忍痛取消，相關活動取消後續事項，會盡快於官網公佈，若有無法週全的事項，懇請以及感謝所有跑友的支持與體諒，祝大家都身體健康，一起祈禱度過這難關。

We are sad to announce cancellation of The Beast Trail 2020. The New Taipei City government believes that the Covid-19 epidemic is still severe and is concerned about the epidemic breach cause by gathering. It strongly recommends the cancellation or postpone of large-scale activities at this stage.
Considering that May is the most suitable season for The Beast Trail, there may be uncertainties such as typhoon and hot or rainy season. Therefore originally planned 9th and 10th May 2020 The Beast Trail is CANCELLED.

The following instructions related to cancellation will be announcement on official website as soon as possible. Although there is no perfect compensation, we will try do our best to deliver a fair arrangement for everyone. Thanks all runners for understanding and support. We wish you all strong health and pray to overcome this difficulty.

Thanks big brother 古明政 remind me about human limits and how to push them. Even I was promising my self during second day I will never go mountains with someone else (one person, one problem), I hope we can do soon another adventure.

Combination of long and hot walk with relatively heavy bags in first day and second day section between 六順山 to 丹大山 (usually done in 2-3 days) totally without water was beyond madness. When we realized we are out of any water source (even mud could not squeeze) and terrain getting more difficult I start little panic. Brother Ku offer me cold Oolong tea from his heavy bag 🙂 (or it was just imagination caused by dehydration). For rest of afternoon and evening we have been on half litter of water. Solution was only move painfully in hard terrain ahead in dark and reach 丹大山 and valley 太平溪源. When we found water upstream we hug each other and all was just past...

Next days took easier and enjoy beutiful mountains and valley of Taiwan. My dream come true and we stood night in most beutifull valley 嘆息灣 I ever visit. These places are not commonly visited by hikers since they are not even located in range of days from 百岳.

Weather was without any rain or clouds and Mabolashi ridge was amazing for 4th days and final part of mountain section with stunning views.

Last morning over Batonguan 八通關 and its landslide was nice mixture of Beauty and Beast of Taiwan mountains. Beer and hotspring bath in 東埔 Dongpu was perfect end.

Another adventure of Petr Novotny & 古明政. This time on ridge where no many hikers dare. This ridge 巴巴中央尖 connect Central Peak 中央尖山 to Nanhu 南湖 over Central east peak 中央尖東峰 to Baba south peak 巴巴山南峰 and terminate in juction between Baba main peak 巴巴山 and Nanhu south peak 南湖大山南峰. Crossing took "just" 4h45m on 5.5km but it was tough. Already challenging morning climb to Central Peak 中央尖 and get to another side to Nanhu took over 11 hours.

The ridge has many hard and dangerous sections. Despite it is shorter and with less elevation gain just a minimum of hikers dare to try it. Now We know why…

3rd and 4th day had fun with Nanhu and visited secret peaks 南湖中南峰 and 南湖東北. Did filming with 周青 Chou Ching and 古明政 for 活水文化事業有限公司 and met many new friends.

Two days out in higher mountains in Taiwan Nantou. I finally decide for this trip in December 2020. It was very nice weather for first day and night was dry. Except middle part on 郡大林道36k支線 all was on less frequent trail and very challenging.
First day climb from 1050m Dongbu 東埔 to 3292m JunDa shan 郡大山. Decide sleep on top of Qingshui shan 清水山 which is very pretty mountain, I would like return there one day with my family.

Night was great in my new sleeping bag, very glad I got new 20F sleeping bag and good mat, slept under small tarp.

Second day was way to challenging. From 清水山 to Jinzi shan 金子山 is bad landslide, but I think is safe if you pay attention. But descent down to civilization from top of 金子山 was very difficult. Steep, slippery on pine needles, less obvious ribbons. Btw 金子山 altitude was measured wrongly in past and now belongs to mountains with 3000m+.
I got brutally lost above my destination, I believed my intuition and I was wrong. My advice is follow OSM (Open Street Map) in your phone if you ever go there, not valley as I did wrongly. But I found my self and got down safely. Day before I drop there bicyckle, cycling back to Dongbu was terrible. Way to tired ride bike 20km uphill with bag. But love this trip, up there are still many places which I would like go.
