「John, 我女兒Tiffany現在大一，能不能暑假到你們公司實習？她現在因為疫情的關係無法回去美國讀書」

「沒有問題啊，我們公司剛好缺國際業務，我就把她安排在業務團隊讓她試看看先做一些簡單的翻釋工作，只是一開始都是我們在花時間教育她，她不會成為即戰力，所以薪水只會是法令最低薪資可以嗎？」其實我一向不太收短期實習生，因為要花主管的時間訓練，而主管的時間也是公司寶貴的資源，而好不容易訓練起來了，他們還沒來得及為公司帶來貢獻，卻又離開了。

但是看在她是Savi跟Anna的學姐的份上，以及她媽媽平常真的是很熱於助人的家長會長，我也欣然答應， 只是沒有料到自己當初出於好心的善念，竟然會在接下來的一個月對公司出現了很大的影響力。

第一個禮拜，我怕Tiffany無聊，交給她功課，叫她去上網研究一下現在新的保養品牌的趨勢。

我沒有想到，一個禮拜後，她竟然會交出一份讓人眼晴為之一亮的報告。 簡報的內容，從排版，字體的一致性，以及堅持簡約的賈伯斯風格，重點是她不只分析出新型態的保養品牌趨勢，連他們各自的成功之道都分析的很透徹。從頭到尾沒有冷場。

我們聽完簡報之後，我在我們的主管群組傳了訊息：「我們真的是老恐龍了，今天Tiffany這份簡報非常的有價值，我們公司需要的就是這種新血，讓我們可以注入新思維」

我好奇的問了Tiffany: 「你這份簡報準備了多久啊？」

「三天」她害羞的說

「做得很棒耶，你的簡報能力跟搜尋能力是你在大學USC學的，還是在高中學的？」

「KAS prepares you well for the college， 因為我們在高中要常做報告，所以反而到了美國的大學就相對輕鬆」她這樣回答

「好，那我這星期派難一點的功課給你，你今天所報告的這些新創品牌以及明星自創品牌，你負責寫開發信給他們看看，讓他們知道台灣有一個佐研院可以為他們代工做出真正安全並且有效的保養品」

我們每星期三都會專門為代工業務開一整天的會議，討論我們如何能更進步的服務代工客戶，如何更有效的開發新客戶。

過了六天，我請Tiffany寄給我看她寫的開發信內容以及她的開發成績，我看了之後，眼晴為之一亮（again), 做了一些紀錄，決定明天跟同仁們分享一些好東西。

隔天的代工會議，當大家報告完進度後，我決定把Tiffany的開發信的內容截圖播放出來跟大家分享（沒有經過Tiffany的同意）

「你們看Tiffany寫的信內容，她是對每個客戶都做了足夠的研究，讓對方一看就知道這不是公版的信件，是有用心研究過他們的品牌核心理念，然後再把對方對品質的堅持跟我們佐研院的核心對接，讓對方知道我們會是最適合他們的夥伴。所以對方這麼有影響力的創辦人就真的回她信了」

我不吝嗇的在大家面前誇奬她，因為她才十九歲，又是實習生，其他同事不會把她當作是眼中釘。 重點是我想把好的，新的，更有效率的做事方式導入到我們的系統。

只有靠這樣的新血來給大家震憾教育，才是最快的企業文化進化。

隔週，我們的其他同仁也開始採取像Tiffany這樣先用心研究對方品牌的方式再引導對方來跟我們的殿堂合作，果然真的有效，開發信的命中率竟然提高了到了60%， 這可是很誇張的進步， 你們要知道，以前我們寄公版的開發信給300個客戶，有時連一封信都得不到回覆。

而Tiffany的進步跟影響並沒有就此停止，我又交給她新的功課，這次是幫公司寫企業介紹的英文版來申請Re100+（是一個世界級的能源永續組織）。

我只導覽帶她跟我走一次佐研院，讓她知道我們的企業跟其他企業的與眾不同之處，以及我們想要帶給台灣以及國際的影響。沒想到她又再一次寫出了一份令我驚艷的報告，直直打中我的心坎裡。

以下是我翻譯她寫的英文原文，身為創辦人的我都不確定自己的中文能否把她的好文章翻譯夠到位，但我努力看看。

It is founded and led by CEO John Lee, who graduated from Ohio University with a Ph. D. in Chemical Engineering. Under his leadership, the company has grown to staff 120 employees in Taiwan and France.

佐見啦生技有限公司是2012年在台灣成立的公司，專注在製造跟銷售保養品。創辦人是李昆霖化工博士，畢業於俄亥俄大學。 在他的領導之下，這間公司已經成長到在台灣跟法國有120位員工。

JOLA INTERNATIONAL currently owns two brand: Timeless Truth Mask (TTM) and Jolab.

Timeless Truth Mask is a brand created out of love for skincare and
ambition to change conventional views of facial sheet masks. Starting off as an e-commerce mask brand in 2012, they soon decided to take upon a challenge and launch their products in one of the top countries for cosmetics — France. Through TTM and Jolab, JOLA INTERNATIONAL’s determination to constantly find ways for improvement ultimately creates impact both locally and globally. In Taiwan, TTM and Jolab are brands that stand out. Unlike traditional cosmetic brands in Taiwan, TTM started off as an e-commerce brand and aimed to market in France first. Moreover, TTM went through the hardship of acquiring PIF qualifications, despite it not being a requirement for Taiwanese cosmetic products. By creating products that fulfill more than just the bare minimum, TTM can overall increase the product quality in Taiwan by initiating a positive form of competition that benefits both companies and consumers. 透過提提研跟佐研院，佐見啦生技對於進步的執念在國際上以及地方上產生了影響。在台灣，提提研跟佐研院是突出的品牌。 不同於一般的傳統品牌，從電商開始的提提研直接攻打最難的法國市場。既便台灣法規並沒有要求歐盟的PIF規範，但提提研還是致力於達到了最難的標準。透過製造超過標準的產品，提提研提升了台灣整體保養品業界的產品品質。同時讓台灣的保養品牌同業們接觸更嚴謹的國際標準規範的知識，可以加速進步的改革。 同樣的，佐研院不只是達到了個體的進步，也藉由引進最新的技術，讓其他的代工廠可以學習，而幫助了整體代工業界的進步

如此一來，這樣的思維整體進步可以改變海外的公司跟國際品牌如何看待台灣公司。 這可以讓國際公司知道台灣的公司已經開始改變傳統便宜行事的思維以及開始提升品質。這可以提升整體的台灣國際名望。

以上是Tiffany所寫的英文文章，你們可以想像這是一個十九歲小女孩所寫出的英文文章嗎？連我這個創辦人都無法寫得比她更好，更何況她才只加入我們公司才二個禮拜。

於是我興奮的把這封信寄給了我們在美國的好朋友們，他們都是在他們各自業界的大人物，一個是物流業，一個是廣告業，我問他們看了文章後感想如何？他們都說寫得非常好，文筆流暢，觀點清楚。

於是我立刻打電話給Tiffany的媽媽，說能不能讓她休學，我好久沒有看到這麼優秀的人才了，我想要好好培養她，把她帶在身邊，跟著我一起跟美國知名廣告商開會，跟著我一起跟美方討論合資子公司，不只是因為我需要一個英文文筆很好的小助理，而是我覺得她可以為公司的思維帶來正面的影響。

我對父母提案是： 我會讓她直接可以跟美國廣告的最高執行長做報告，等到她可以回去加洲時，她就可以直接去那家知名的廣告公司上班，那可是加洲數一數二知名的廣告公司呢。

她媽媽聽到以後很開心， 但還是說要尊重她女兒的想法，畢竟那是她的人生，但她會引導她女兒說這是很難得的實習機會。

隔天，她媽媽很興奮的跟我說，她至少說服她女兒先休學半年在我們公司實習，然後還一直感謝我，說我是她女兒的貴人

「其實是因為她很優秀，就忍不住起了想要培養她的念頭」我這樣回她

昨天，Savi問我：「爸爸我以後可以打工嗎？」

「為什麼要打工？」

「因為我想賺點錢」

於是我跟她講了Tiffany來我們公司實習的故事，並且也給他看Tiffany所寫的文章是多麼的優秀。然後我跟他說：「爸爸並不是反對你打工，但重點是你選的工作是你可以從中學習，讓你變更好的人，而不是只為了存錢而打工，那就只會是浪費時間而已」

我鼓勵他，暑假有時間的話，還不如努力提升自己的能力跟思維觀點（像是大量的閱讀），就可以有機會成為像Tiffany學姐那麼優秀的人才。

「到時你的光采會如此耀眼，要讓人忽視你都很難」

我這樣的鼓勵他

註1: 最高標準的歐盟的保養品法規並沒有要求製程一定要用製藥等級的淨水器，但我們就是想要做到更好，引進了藥廠等級的淨水系統，於是超越了最高等級的歐盟法規

p.s.2 Tiffany現在才進公司第四個禮拜，已經開始直接做簡報跟美國的合作夥伴concall對談，我刻意給她舞台，讓她可以跟廣告公司的最高執行長以及營運長對談，這對她以後的職業生涯會有很好的幫助

「 兩個男的在一起很噁心！台灣人不能接受這種事！」
「 Les homos sont dégoutants ! On n'accepte pas ça à Taïwan ! 」

當時她對我說這句話，我無法反應過來，實在讓我太無語了。

2016年，我第一次來到台灣，我跟著瑞士朋友一起環島。那天晚上，我們到了高雄，全身疲憊、酸痛，畢竟都已經花了2個禮拜的時間環島。幸好我在高雄也認識一位男性朋友，他帶我們去腳底按摩店休息。身為一個會講中文的瑞士人，不管走到哪裡總會有人熱情地和我打招呼、聊天，那天晚上也不例外，幫我們按摩的阿姨一直很熱情的和我聊天（過於熱情）。

她說：「你的中文是在哪裡學的？」對於一個會說中文的外國人來說，這是台灣人與我們交流的經典台詞，起初聽到這樣的問題，總是為了自己的中文能力感到自喜，然而同樣的問題回答至少15次以上，坦白是真的蠻膩的。不過我會用比較幽默的方式回答，於是我會半開玩笑的說：「我的中文是跟他在一起學的（指著旁邊的男性朋友），我中文好也是他的功勞！」

熱情的阿姨一聽到我的回答，立刻變臉、以非常嚴厲的口氣說：「不可以！你不能說『跟他在一起學』，你一定要說『跟他一起學』！『在一起』只能男女朋友使用，你們兩個是男的，不能說『 在一起』！」

聽完這段話，我的腦子充滿了問號。首先，外國人跟台灣人交流時，一定會出現雞同鴨講的情形，但也不必如此氣憤。然而，事情還未結束，最不可思議的是，她隨後加了一句：「兩個男的在一起很噁心！我知道你們美國同性戀可以在一起，但是台灣人不能接受這種事！」

整個房間陷入沈默，其他的按摩師傅假裝沒聽到，繼續各做各的事。我和我的台灣朋友因為聽得懂這段話，因此表情瞬間垮下來，這是我第一次在台灣了解，什麼叫做「恐同」。我的另一位來自瑞士的朋友，因為聽不懂這番話，則繼續享受這趟台灣旅行的美好。事後，瑞士的朋友問我，剛剛在和阿姨聊什麼？而我的思緒卻依然沈浸在剛剛的言論中...

「就是因為你們美國人愛玩，把雜亂的風氣帶進台灣。」可是我不是美國人，美國人也不雜亂，同性戀更不等於是雜亂。

「我們的總統是蔡英文，因為她是同性戀，才想把整個台灣人變成同性戀。」我當時並不清楚台灣的政治狀況，但是我很清楚不管在台灣還是在全世界，沒有「變成」同性戀這回事，今天如果同性婚姻合法化，你並不會因此「變成」同性戀，因為這是很自然的事。

還有令我更無法言語的言論，至今回想起來，我還是覺得好不真實，好像在做夢。而當朋友問我，到底發生什麼事了？我真的不知道該怎麼跟他開口述說剛剛發生的一切，我不想毀掉他對台灣的美好，所以我只是搖頭苦笑。

即便到了今天，回想這一切，我還是覺得很羞愧，因為我沒有去找她的老闆去投訴這名員工，也沒有站出來為同性戀說話。這讓我想到身邊優秀的同性戀朋友，因為身份不被認同，而受到不平等的對待。至今瑞士的青少年仍因為自己是同性戀的身份，而受到不平等的待遇，甚至被霸凌，而最終選擇自殺，這也是為什麼我在今天分享這段故事的原因，不僅如此，往後若碰到任何歧視、霸凌同性戀的事，我都會站出來為此發聲！

到底誰才是噁心？是同性戀？還是那些針對同性戀散播錯誤謠言的人？

Voilà un petit article que j'ai écrit en mandarin pour dénoncer l'homophobie ordinaire à Taïwan. Voici la traduction française approximative, rédigée après la version chinoise :

Les faits remontent à l'été 2016, lorsqu'une amie suisse et moi faisions le tour de Taïwan. À peine arrivés dans la ville de Kaohsiung, un ami du coin nous fit découvrir le marché nocturne local puis nous proposa une activité un peu plus relaxante : un massage de pieds ! C'est ainsi que nous nous rendirent les trois dans un petit spa afin de reprendre des forces avant la suite de notre périple. À peine entrés dans l'établissement, nous, étrangers, avions réussi à déclencher une cacophonie de commérages qui ne fit que s'amplifier au fur et à mesure que les masseuses s'apercevaient que je parlais chinois.

La masseuse qui me fut assignée, émerveillée par ma présence, me fit subir l'interrogatoire habituel : « Que fais-tu à Taïwan ? », « Est-ce que la fille à côté de toi est ta femme ? », « Que fais-tu comme travail ? »... Bien que parfois fatiguant, c'est toujours avec bon cœur et un grand sourire que je m'adonne à cet exercice. À la question « Avec qui as-tu appris le chinois ? », je répondis en riant : « J'ai appris le chinois ensemble (en désignant du doigt mon ami taïwanais à mes côtés), c'est un excellent professeur ! ».

En une fraction de seconde, la sympathique masseuse se raidit et reprit sur un ton sec : « Tu ne peux pas dire « ensemble » ! Tu dois dire « j'ai appris le chinois avec lui » ! Seul les couples peuvent être « ensemble », mais vous, vous êtes deux garçons, vous ne pouvez pas être « ensemble » ! ».

J'étais confus. N'est-il pas normal de commettre des fautes de grammaire lorsque que l'on s'exprime dans une langue étrangère ? En quoi est-ce qu'une petite erreur grammaticale justifierait une attitude aussi irrespectueuse qu'inappropriée ? La masseuse ne s'arrêta pas là, elle ajouta : « Deux hommes ensemble, c'est dégoutant ! Peut-être que chez vous aux États-Unis c'est possible, mais à Taïwan on n'accepte pas ça ! ».

La salle fut immédiatement plongée dans un long silence. Les autres masseuses firent mine de ne rien avoir entendu, alors que mon ami taïwanais et moi étions totalement choqués par ce que nous venions d'entendre. Seule mon amie suisse, épargnée par la barrière de la langue, profitait de son massage en toute insouciance.

Pendant ce temps, la masseuse continuait de dégoiser ses propos nauséabonds : « Vous les Américains, vivez dans la promiscuité et voulez imposez ce mode de vie aux Taïwanais... Notre Présidente Tsai Ying Wen est homosexuelle, c'est pour ça qu'elle veut tous nous rendre gays ! ».

« Tout va bien Yannick ? » : c'est à ce moment-là que mon ami interrompu l'infernal monologue. Sans le savoir, elle avait mis fin au calvaire que subissaient nos oreilles depuis d'éternelles minutes. Pourtant, je décidai de ne pas l'informer sur ce qu'il venait de se produire. En fin de compte, elle passait de merveilleuses vacances, à quoi bon lui bousiller le moral avec une personne et des paroles qui n'en valaient pas la peine.

Deux années plus tard, alors que je repense à cette scène surréaliste, je ressens une profonde honte : honte d'avoir fait la sourde oreille, honte de n'avoir rien répondu à cette femme, honte de ne pas m'être plaint à la direction du spa concernant le comportement inadmissible de leur employée... C'est pour toutes les personnes homosexuelles, ces hommes et ces femmes incroyables qui aujourd'hui encore subissent de pareilles scènes de discrimination, que ce soit à l'école, au travail, dans les rues, en famille... et même au spa, que je ne resterai plus silencieux.

La tolérance et, plus important encore, l'acceptation des personnes LGBT dans nos sociétés passent aujourd'hui par la reconnaissance civile de leurs unions et la sensibilisation dans les écoles publiques pour prévenir les comportements homophobes. De la Suisse à Taïwan et dans le reste du monde, même combat pour l'égalité des droits !

2020 Taiwan-US-Japan Trilateral Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue

Hello moderator, fellow panelists, I am Taiwan legislator Freddy Lim.

This year, due to the pandemic, we can only conduct this panel online. I’m still very glad to be invited to attend this event and exchange ideas with these great panelists. Here I want to share my views on today’s main topic: “Challenges and Opportunities in the Indo-Pacific Region and the Taiwan Strait in 2020 & Beyond”.

First I want to start with the conventional positioning of Taiwan under the established international order.

After WWII, the international order led by the allies dragged Taiwan into China’s civil war. Since then, Taiwan's been struggling with the “One China” dispute, unable to gain independence and world recognition like many other colonies.

Even though Taiwanese people have built an independent and democratic country after half a century of hard work, now we enjoy freedom and human rights, the international community still isolates Taiwan. One of the main reasons is obviously China.

The established international community viewed China as a huge economic opportunity, a partner that would eventually carry out political reforms and be integrated into modern international order. Under this conventional thinking, the international community is willing to help China ease and suppress many of its unpleasant problems, including the thorny "Democratic Taiwan."

This has reduced Taiwan to merely China’s “Taiwan Problem”. We’re even slandered as the “troublemaker” of the Taiwan Strait; As a result, the respect that Taiwan deserves continues to be shelved, and the active role we can play, the contributions we can make in the international community are also ignored.

However, this established international structure is now changing.

After decades of appeasement policy, and acquiring WTO membership in 2001, China’s various structural changes that the world anticipated have never taken place. On the contrary, China’s been using organized measures, such as bribing, infiltration, and hybrid-warfare, to undermine international norms. It’s worked hard to manipulate and control international organizations, in order to project its influence onto the world. These actions have been even more distinct after Xi Jinping became President of China in 2012.

Internationally, China implemented debt-trap diplomacy on many countries through the Belt and Road Initiative. It established Confucius Institutes around the world, which are basically intelligence operations in the name of culture. Chinese tech giant, Huawei also aids China’s international surveillance. Not to mention China’s relentless expansion in the South China Sea, building military bases, creating man-made islands. This year, it’s even more serious. We witnessed the long time Chinese infiltration into UN organizations. The favoritism towards China helped its cover-up, which led to the dysfunction of WHO, ultimately causing the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Domestically, the Chinese government not only failed to implement any political reforms, but it also created the “Social Credit” system with advanced technology, to surveil and control its own people; In addition, the Chinese government built the notorious “Reeducation Camps” - concentration camps in reality, in Tibet, Xingjian, where human rights conditions were already in a bad shape. Even the Hong Kong people, who were supposed to be protected by the promise of “One Country, Two Systems”, their freedom and human rights were completely destroyed by the Chinese government.

These compelling examples show that there is some serious fallacy in the conventional way of viewing China. All facts point to this: Taiwan is not the problem. China is the problem. China is the troublemaker of the Taiwan Strait. It’s the troublemaker of the Indo-Pacific region. It’s even the troublemaker of the entire world.

Under decades of collective misjudgement, China was allowed to become the most terrifying, largest digital authoritarian government in human history. It’s a new form of dictatorship. As a response, many countries have vastly changed their China policy in recent years, thus the change of international structure.

This brings me to my next point: Give Taiwan the status it deserves. Let us contribute to the international society.

In a new international structure, Taiwan shouldn’t be categorized as “China’s Taiwan Problem”. Instead, we should be one of the key countries for international cooperation, responding to the new type of dictatorship.

Taiwan has faced authoritarian China on the front line for decades. Many countries are now facing the problem of China's infiltration under its United Front programs. Taiwan started dealing with the same problems 10 to 20 years ago. We have gained a lot of experience to contribute to the international community.

Taking the COVID pandemic as an example, Taiwan has studied and analyzed the actual situation and the information provided by the Chinese government with a serious and high-vigilance attitude. Based on our experience and lessons learned from the China SARS epidemic in 2001, we decisively formed a series of epidemic preventive measures. We have handled the crisis with the principle of openness and transparency. Our people have been self-disciplined and willing to cooperate. All of this demonstrates the high level of democracy in Taiwan’s society.

After the domestic epidemic was brought under control, Taiwan has continued to share our epidemic prevention supplies and the experiences on forming epidemic prevention policies with the world.

Although Taiwan was suppressed, even excluded by China in various international organizations in the past, we’ve been doing our best to comply with the norms & regulations of international organizations. We always actively contribute every time we have the opportunity. What I want to say is, all of this proves Taiwan could be a reliable partner in the international community. We are capable of working with other countries to solve major problems. We deserve our seats and participation in international organizations.

Regarding the impact of U.S. change of administration.

Now the U. S. presidential election is over and the administration is currently under transition. Many countries, including Taiwan, are concerned about whether the new U.S. government will change its course on foreign policy, especially its China policy. However, the "Rebalance (of Asia-Pacific Region)" proposed by the Obama administration in 2011, was in fact already a strategic adjustment in response to the rise of China and possible subsequent expansion.

The Trump administration further proposed the Indo-Pacific strategy in 2017 to promote and uphold international law and regulations, aiming to ensure every country has the liberty to be free from oppression and coercion. I believe that both parties in the U.S. understand the root cause of the Indo-Pacific regional problem comes from the Chinese government. Even for the Biden administration, it will have to provide practical responses. Facing the new structure, they can’t just go back to the traditional thinking of the last century.

As for Taiwan, the pro-Taiwan acts in the U.S., such as the Asia Reassurance Initiative Act of 2018, Taiwan Travel Act, Taiwan Allies International Protection and Enhancement, were passed with strong consensus between the Republicans and the Democrats. I believe Taiwan could be a key partner to the international community and play an active role in the free world. This isn’t just the consensus of the two parties in the U.S., but will be the consensus of all democratic countries.

In a progressive aspect, the International community can benefit from a wider recognition of Taiwan.

In recent years, the performance of Taiwanese society in terms of epidemic prevention performance, human rights, gender equality, marriage equality, and open government are actually in line with many progressive ideas and visions. The ideas and visions that many democratic countries have long supported. Therefore, I’m quite optimistic that, after 2020, Taiwan can make even greater progress, on multiple levels and in broader aspects, contributing to the international community.

Finally, I want to emphasize again that to truly resolve regional problems, we need dynamic multilateral cooperation. But this must not be a return to the conventional thinking of the past century, which was "expecting" China to abide by the international order. The outdated thinking had been proved to be a failure. Otherwise there wouldn’t be a series of Chinese infiltration and aggression after its rise in recent years, which became one of the most difficult issues in the world. I believe after 2020, U.S., Japan, and Taiwan can establish a new model of international cooperation through deeper collaboration and communication. And hopefully, this model will maximize the security of the Indo-Pacific region and promote peace, stability and development in the region.

Soulful Singer-Songwriter KHALIL FONG Drops Poignant New Hip-Hop Single ‘TWIOCAMIC’ on 7th August 2020

With more than 40 million music streams online, best known for his soulful lyrics and smooth R&B vocals, Chinese-American singer-songwriter Khalil Fong is using his gift to spread a message of unity and progression in his new hip-hop single, ‘TWIOCAMIC’.

“I’ve always identified as a world citizen which lets me see the similarities in all peoples and cultures. I believe the future depends on our children’s ability to see the past, present and future in a new light.” – KHALIL FONG

Produced at Fong’s home in quarantine, ‘TWIOCAMIC’, which stands for ‘The World Is One Country And Mankind Its Citizens’, sees the R&B artist rap philosophically about finding unity in diversity and achieving harmony amongst the human race. Addressing the moral concepts of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, Fong’s lyrics tackle the idea that until people start recognising their collective roles, we’ll continue repeating common historical mistakes:

“I’ve wanted to sing about these concepts for the past five years, but only recently did I have the full inspiration and motivation to complete the idea. The entire world is filled with conflicts and hatred, misunderstandings and lack of empathy. Humanity is facing great social struggles and environmental disasters.
