美國的經濟看似不錯, 失業率很低, 但貧富不均的問題越來越嚴重, 有錢人錢滾錢, 稅還越繳越少。一般人就算大學畢業也可能生活拮据。亞利桑那州有個小學老師去年把薪水單貼上網, 她年薪只有區區三萬五千美金(矽谷工程師年薪隨便二十萬以上)。這位老師錢賺得超少也就算了, 還得常常自掏腰包買教室用品給學生, 她的貼文迅速在網路上發酵, 一個遠在紐約的陌生人看到後開始資助她的教室用品。
美國每州每個學區的教師薪水都不一樣, 有的地方老師們生活無虞, 流動率很低, 卻也有很多學區的老師得兼差打工才能養家活口。也因此最近美國陸續發生教師罷工抗議的事件(包括亞利桑那州)。川普的教育部長不僅不體諒老師, 還說老師這樣在傷害學生。而川普和共和黨的新稅法更毫不留情地給教育工作者一計悶棍。以前老師買教室用品的費用可以抵稅, 現在不行, 反而是大富豪買私人飛機可以抵稅。
