Always heartened to read of Singaporeans who help others, whether providing food to the poor like Mr Toh, or doing a something extra for our NSmen like Mr Tan (featured in ST http://bit.ly/161Yfod). There are many ways to help, and Mr Toh and Mr Tan do it the way they know best. I hope they inspire others to step out and spread this spirit of generosity. – LHL
Toh Ah Wat is 65 and runs a drinks stall at Ang Mo Kio market. He lives in a four-room flat in Yishun with two of his four children, and his wife. He takes only three days off a month. But his hard work earns him enough to be generous – any one who can’t afford a meal in the area gets a free breakfast from him – a hot drink and kaya and butter toast.
Each morning, I wake up at just before 4am, at the darkest hour. After 30 years, I don’t need light and I don’t need an alarm. Before 4.20, I am out of the flat. I need to be quick because there are people waiting by 5 am. I drive my old Mitshubishi to Ang Mo Kio. I don’t think I actually speed, but get to my stall no later than 4.40 am.
Then it’s like a race against time – boil the water, wipe down the counters, boil the cups. Heat, water, powder, milk, lights. In that order.
I need the water to be a rolling boil, and then when it’s steaming hot, it goes into the powder. This gives the best fragrance.
People tell me the ang mohs, they don’t actually boil the water until it’s 100 degrees, if it’s too hot, something happens to their coffee and it tastes funny. I’ve tried it, but it tastes funny anyway, even if they did it at the “correct temperature”. But our coffee is different you know – we have a different colour, a different flavour, composition and the powder reacts differently.
I have been roasting beans since I was 10. I don’t know chemistry but I know what I am talking about. Our coffee needs the water hot but you need to know when you take stop boiling it – just that little bit over and it’s sour.
I never did well at school, never wanted to stay in school beyond primary four. But I have a nose for coffee and for making tea. Well, tea is the hard one but I can’t tell you my secret. No matter how fast I need to make it, no matter how many people give me their orders, I carry it in my head, I don’t get it wrong.
From 5 am to 7 am, I hardly stop – people going to work, and they need breakfast fast and nourishing. I sell a basic set for $2.20 – two eggs, soft or hard boiled, kaya and of course tea or coffee. This is much cheaper than anywhere else – less than half the price you pay for those in air-con places. It’s nothing fancy but I make sure the coffee and tea are better than the usual. Each day, I sell between 70 to 100 breakfasts.
Then, from 8 am onwards, those who need a free meal come around. It’s nothing organised, just from the neighbourhood. They here, sit down, and I give them breakfast. I started doing this many years ago – because you know, as hawkers we know who are the poor people around us. When they pay, they will take the money out reluctantly, and even a $2 note is folded carefully. Some of us will say, “It’s ok, don’t have to pay.”
But actually, people have their pride. They don’t want to come to us and try for a free meal, and they are afraid because they don’t know which one can afford to give them a meal.
So, last October, I made it more formal. I went to the community centre and told them – look you must be helping lots of people. Anyone who needs a meal you tell them to come to me, and I will give them free breakfast. Just don’t come during peak hours if they can help it.
I told my wife: “We am not serving anything expensive, a few meals, surely we can treat people.” She agreed. She takes the afternoon shift – I get off at 4 pm and she takes over.
So the CC people, they made a simple printout with a picture of the breakfast and gave them to people who need a free meal. Each month, I give out about 50 free breakfasts. I didn’t set a limit for the CC, but this is the number that come to me, on the average.
I used to give eggs automatically, but some of them don’t eat it so it’s wasted – they are old and many have high cholesterol and they explain they cannot eat the eggs. So I only give when they ask for it now.
My wife says some people come in the afternoons for “breakfast” too, but it’s ok, whenever they are hungry, we will feed them. I am hoping that it will catch on among the other hawkers too, but so far, I don’t think anyone else has done it yet. But it doesn’t matter. I keep doing it and someday, others will do the same too, if they can afford it.
I usually try and sneak a lunch in at 12 noon – I eat from all my neighbours stalls, it's a big market but over the years, I’ve tried everything. My favourite now is the fish soup stall.
We all eat from one another – all pay market price but we give each other more ingredients or a special cut of meat. I usually eat within 15 minutes because the lunch crowd comes out right after 12. I have four helpers – two in the morning, and two in the afternoon – all my relatives, or my wife’s family.
After lunch, it’s breakneck speed until 3 pm. Then I can sit down and talk to my friends, drink sugar cane juice, and finally talk to the customers. After a break, I drive home, take two to three hours’ nap and drive back about 9pm. to close up.
I do all the heavy lifting – getting the beer and drinks out from the store to the stall, clear the bottles, do the clean up and close the accounts.
I fetch my wife home, have a simple meal, and we are usually in bed by 11 pm after a bit of TV. We’ve done this together for decades so we have a routine like clockwork. Except for our off days – when we can do whatever we like. We take two full off days a month, and two half days. All of them are spent with our six grand kids – two of my four kids are married.
I don’t bring them any where expensive, or buy them anything, but we have a good time, just driving around Singapore, have meals at zi char stalls, and you know, just giving them a break from their parents! When they see me, it’s like a holiday for them – “Gong gong is here!” and they go wild. The oldest is in secondary school, and the youngest are in primary school.
When they were younger, my kids always offer to help me out at the stall but I forbade them to do so. It’s a hard life and I wanted them to do well, have a better life. Now all of them have good steady jobs, which is the best reward for me.

DIMPY BHALOTIA
Few, very few were the photos in Henri Cartier-Bresson's house; one, maybe two. One, for which the great photographer had a real admiration, was Martin Munkácsi's “Three Boys at Lake Tanganika”. Three kids immortalized from behind who release an irrepressible vitality as they run towards the waters of the lake. Why did Cartier-Bresson love that photograph? Because, as he himself said: "I suddenly understood that photography can fix eternity in a moment". Looking at Dimpy Bhalotia's “Flying Boys” photograph, and with which she won the British Journal of Photography's Female in Focus Award 2020, it seems that the three kids from Munkácsi are back after a 90-year journey. What's more, they seem to have returned to take flight and captured at the precise moment when the photographer's eye, heart and mind are perfectly aligned like a distant constellation. There is, in the photographs of the young Indian woman based in London, something that comes from a precise photographic tradition and that firmly anchors the composition to those three fundamental components mentioned, orienting it towards the search for the moment in which a human episode - and not alone - has the ability to carry out its meaning. Unrepeatable. There’s no shortage of references, and they are a sign of a solid visual culture. What we look at in Dimpy Bhalotia's photographs seems to come out of a story rewritten with new words, new hints but firmly determined to be interpreted through a lexicon that forces us to pause in the quotationist space just the time it takes before taking on a life of its own. And this subtle and graceful vision of things that hovers over events, has that breath that lies within a poetic vision of life, because to take photographs that are able to restore the beauty of a gesture, you need to love life and its interpreters. Here men and animals, caught individually or at the crossroads of mutual interaction, appear to us as subjects that are barely involuntary in dialogue but who, on closer inspection, are captured in the exact moment of a secret dialogue. The strength of Dimpy Bhalotia's photographs comes from afar and therefore is well structured. And it is seen above all in the balancing of forms, in the formal bet played on the body of animal subjects, from which, in other circumstances, we grasp a happy surrealist trace, an ideal terrain in which to resolve certain compositional recklessness. Dimpy Bhalotia's work stops at the confluence of two different photographic currents: humanism and surrealism (Cartier-Bresson himself experienced a very delicate surrealism before founding Magnum), both handled with ease and confidence. Her is a very clear, minimal voice. The compositions obey the commandment to be rigidly set on an essential register, bordering on calligraphic, but the sobriety convinces us of the result. The groove of tradition is traced, but following its path without adding one's footprints is like not having walked through it. Photography is a book that never stops being written, as long as you have something to say. As in this case.

Yayyy! Finally completed my first term - 10 weeks in Coventry University London Campus!
Walking to University seemed to be my everyday best moment; those 15 minutes journeys on the same route were so different each day. Different outfit carries different mood, different music leads different rhythm of steps, different faces passing by tells different life-stories through their eyes or gestures. There are always some small surprises, noticeable or not, happen each day; and no matter how small they are, they make your everyday different from yesterday.
Every single day within these 10 weeks had been fully utilized in the most-efficient-manner to learn, to deliver 4 formal presentations and to write 3 challenging yet interesting assignments. Even though I spent almost everyday in the libraries, I had a good time, real good time. I'm always truly grateful & passionate to learn. And I guess, this on-going motivation comes not only from the external environment, but also deeply from the within. Anything that comes from the inside, gives multiplier effect on the outcomes. <3
'When everyone else is saying 24 hours a day is not enough to live, make it more than enough; it's all about time management'
I've learned a lot, from the professional lecturers & colleagues, through the tasks, in the classroom where 30-50 nationalities exist, and most importantly in this perfect modern & enjoyable studying environment; all these actual experiences I've got totally far exceeded my expectation. If I were to rate my first-term's experiences, they definitely have a full-10 from me, easily. Thank you CULC, the Best modern university of the year 2015.
Cheers,

Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and YZF1000R ThunderAce (are Sanda ace who doesn't Waizettoef it) are motorcycles that YAMAHA MOTOR was manufacturing for overseas export. Sanda ace's pet name was named.
It appears as a restyling version of FZR1000 that was the flagship of this company 1996 and till then. It differs from the form of a straight line keynote of FZR, and it has peculiar externals that multiuse the curve. It was CBR900RR of HONDA to be made to a rival at that time.
The engine was assumed to be a complete new design 35 times about the EXUP adoption excluding the crankcase as well as FZR though was 4 inclining forward water-cooled DOHC5 valve series cylinders. "YZF" that is works racer's name follows the dimension of YZF750SP that is the race base car of this company by crown, the mainframe, and the chassis and is Can all new designs. A high movement the same as the aim was demonstrated by dryness with a light body of 198kg. Moreover, the front fork dares to adopt the Sata type. Because it was an easy riding position and delicate riding comfort, the evaluation as Haispedotsarar was also high as the super-sports car.
It was supported by the deep-rooted popularity, production was continued, and it ..model.. became a discontinuation at the end in 2001 though YZF-R1 that was able to be called a succession model on substance appeared in 1998, and the seat of the flagship was transferred.
The manufacturing sales were done from Honda Motor Co., Ltd. as a car general and on the market back though HONDA and RVF (Arlbief) were motorcycles equipped with four type cylinder of four water-cooled strokes V engine that the HONDA racing had developed, and it was developed at first as a vehicle only for the game.

HONDA RVF400

The last racer replica put on the market as succession model of VFR400(NC30) in January, 1994. Frames are the diamond frames of the character section structures of eyes of the new design, and engine and each part rigidity balance, etc. have been changed with NC30. It is structural of shape and the carburetor of the exhaust of ..breathing in.. - port, is 1?3 velocity gear ratios, the front forks, the swing arms, and a rear suspension etc. have been changed by another. Moreover, it has the previous year's works RVF750 and the face of this shape, and RVF/RC45 of 750cc is development simultaneously. A formal car name (The manufacturer mark is an alias) is RVF and 400 that shows the displacement doesn't adhere. There is not the one to show the displacement in exterior even graphic with RVF though it is designed either. The perfection is high only in the racer replica end departure though the sales price has risen more than the vehicle of this class because gorgeous parts are treated, too. However, the cost that hangs in the functional component becomes shape of simplification of the exterior parts (Parts that were the acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins so far are changed to the AES resin and painting is omitted), and it comes to be going to annoy the owner like the crack etc. done by discoloration and deterioration in the future.
A heat problem and poor maintenance, etc. that are the fates of horizontal putting V type engine have been succeeded as a fault. Moreover, the sparking plug is a special size and prices of parts are high. It becomes H4R type with special headlight shape, generality is a low, and quantities of light small dice (When a highly effective valve on the market is used as it is, wiring is burnt) by 35/30W.
There is a possibility that the engine stalls suddenly because the possibility that trouble occurs from the structure that heat shuts oneself up easily in Reguratorectifaia is high if it doesn't exchange it for the measures goods (with heat radiation fin).
The demand for RVF400 was especially higher than that of RVF/RC45 between the young generations
because of the insurance regime by the displacement in Britain.

Minimalist Shoe Collection and Decluttering
ミニマリズム
This is my Minimalist Shoe Collection 2016. Some people might say that this is not minimalist enough and that’s okay. Each person is different. Some people might only have 6 pairs of shoes (like my partner) and some people might have 14 (me!). Minimalism is not a contest. For me, it’s being happy with what you have and being conscious of what you own. I currently have 14 pairs of shoes and that works for me. There isn’t a pair that I forget just because I keep them in boxes during winter. When spring/ summer comes, they fulfil their life purpose of being worn and complementing my outfit.
What I currently own:
3 pairs of boots
1 gumboots for rainy days
1 gym shoes
3 flat shoes
3 sandals
3 formal shoes
In my quest for minimalism, I told myself at the start of this year that I wouldn’t buy any clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, even socks and underwear because I already have more than enough and I have everything I need. I grew up in a buy buy buy culture. Part of our family routine every Sunday was to wander the mall and buy something. It was aimless shopping just for the sake of buying something. When I was younger, I didn’t really question that. Today, I am more conscious of the things I buy, and the things that I have at home. There’s still so much I want to do. I’m taking little steps and I hope you join me in my journey.
