THE meteoric rise of Aussie NBA rookie Ben Simmons continued today with another marquee performance against the Atlanta Hawks.
The towering Philadelphia playmaker recorded a fifth double double in his opening eight games, falling agonisingly short of a second career triple double as the 76ers claimed their first home win of the season, 119-109.
Simmons had just four points at the long break, but turned it on in the second half with 10 in the third, finishing with 19 points, a career-high 13 rebounds, nine assists and a pair of steals.
None of his buckets was better than this running floater that fell like a teardrop from heaven, but a massive slam in the lane with a tick over one minute to go sealed the game and brought the Wells Fargo Center crowd to its feet.
The Sixers opened the game on a 25-8 run, but the pesky Hawks made a fist of it, tying things up at 93 at the final break.
But they missed their first 11 shots of the last quarter, effectively killing off their chances.
Simmons had a ton of help with the Sixers sharing the load thanks to six players in double digits, led by Robert Covington (22 points) and Joel Embiid (21 points, 12 rebounds, a career-high six dimes to goa long with three steals and three blocks). Dennis Schroder had 25 for the Hawks.

Allen Iverson has received countless standing ovations in Philadelphia over the years, usually at the Wells Fargo Center, where he thrilled local crowds on many occasions during his electrifying career with the 76ers.
He added one more on Thursday night, this time at the SugarHouse Casino Events Center as he entered the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame. But instead of cupping his hand to his ear in his customary pose and basking in the applause, The Answer had a different reply in mind.
He simply returned the adoration.
"It's another moment when the people of Philadelphia really prove to me how they feel about me, and I want them to know that I feel the same way about them," Iverson said. "I was born in Virginia, but I'm Philadelphia."
Iverson was one of 15 new inductees in the Hall's 15th induction class, joining such popular figures as Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer and Flyers winger Reggie Leach.
He was the last speaker of the night and talked about how he was motivated during his career to make the fans proud of him.
"I used to love putting my hand to my ear and getting those chill bumps running all through my body," he said. "Y'all always made me feel like every shot was going to go in. ... I love y'all so much and I love our relationship. Like I said before during my (Basketball) Hall of Fame speech, I've never seen a relationship like Allen Iverson's relationship with the Philly fans. There's nothing like it. You can look at LeBron (James) in Cleveland, you can look at (Michael Jordan) in Chicago, but it's nothing like this."
Leach was a member of the Flyers' famous LCB line with Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber and still holds the franchise record with 61 goals in a season, set in 1976. That same year, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs, the only person in NHL history to win the award as a member of the losing team in the Stanley Cup Finals.

BEN Simmons put on an incredible performance, but it wasn’t enough as the Philadelphia 76ers gave up a big lead, ultimately falling to the Golden State Warriors.
The 76ers opened up the game with a stunning first quarter, with their 22-point lead at the half looking insurmountable.
It wasn’t.
The defending NBA Champions used a 47-15 third period to take the lead over the young 76ers, using their experience to leave Wells Fargo Arena with a 124-116 victory.
Simmons, out of Melbourne, had one of the best games of his career, finishing with 23 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high 12 assists, but the Warriors’ offensive firepower proved to be too much.
Stephen Curry led the way with a game-high 35 points, as well as five rebounds and five assists, while Kevin Durant had 27 points of his own.

The 76ers jumped out to an incredible lead, shooting 19-of-26 from the field — including 8-of-12 from downtown — heading into the first break with a 47-28 advantage.
