The hot spell has caused water levels in Linggiu Reservoir to fall to a historic low. This reservoir in Johor supplies half our water needs. Last August, I posted about how the reservoir was only half full (bit.ly/1YrvKKF). Now it is just over one third full.
Minister Masagos Zulkifli described how this has affected the reliability of our water supply from Johor in the Committee of Supply (COS) in Parliament today. We have been able to mitigate this using our other National Taps, but we must continue to diversify our water sources. Climate change will bring more extreme weather patterns, e.g. more prolonged and severe droughts. We are building another NEWater factory by 2016 and two more desalination plants by 2019. PUB is also looking at a fifth desalination plant on Jurong Island.
Water has always been and will always be a strategic issue for Singapore, which is why I watch the water levels very closely. We must continue to conserve and make the most of this precious resource.
