NBA ย่อมาจาก National Basketball Association ก่อตั้งขึ้นในปี 1949
โดยเป็นการรวมตัวกัน ระหว่างลีกบาสเกตบอลของสหรัฐอเมริกา 2 ลีก

คือ Basketball Association of America (BAA) ก่อตั้งในปี 1946
และ National Basketball League (NBL) ก่อตั้งในปี 1937

แม้ในปัจจุบัน NBA จะมีทีมบาสเกตบอลถึง 30 ทีม
แต่ในช่วงเริ่มแรกนั้น NBA มีทีมบาสเกตบอลทั้งหมดเพียง 17 ทีม

แถมในช่วงเริ่มต้น NBA ก็ไม่ได้รับความนิยมมากนัก
เพราะในปี 1955 มีทีมบาสเกตบอลแข่งขันกันเพียง 8 ทีมเท่านั้น

แต่สิ่งที่ทำให้ NBA กลับมาเป็นที่นิยม และกลับมาเติบโตได้
มาจากการปรับโครงสร้างการแข่งขันขึ้นใหม่

เริ่มต้นจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงกฎกติกาการแข่งขัน

ยกตัวอย่างเช่น การเพิ่มเขตทำคะแนน 3 แต้ม
จากเดิมที่มีการทำคะแนนได้เพียง 2 แต้มต่อการชูตลง 1 ลูกเท่านั้น
ซึ่งลูก 3 แต้มนี้ทำให้เกิดความหลากหลายและรูปแบบการเล่นใหม่เข้ามาในเกม

หรืออีกกฎที่เพิ่มเข้ามาคือ การเพิ่มระบบ “Shot Clock”
ที่กำหนดเวลาในการครอบครองบอลของแต่ละฝั่ง
ทำให้แต่ละทีมต้องรีบทำคะแนนภายในเวลาที่กำหนด

การเปลี่ยนแปลงเหล่านี้ ทำให้เกมการแข่งขันมีความรวดเร็ว
มีรูปแบบที่กระตุ้นให้นักกีฬาต้องแข่งกันทำแต้มตลอดเวลา
ส่งผลให้เกมดูสนุกและตื่นเต้นมากขึ้น และผู้ชมก็เริ่มให้ความสนใจเพิ่มขึ้นตามไปด้วย

นอกจากนี้ อีกหนึ่งในโครงสร้างของ NBA ที่แตกต่างจากลีกกีฬาอื่น
คือรูปแบบโมเดลธุรกิจของ NBA ที่สร้างความมั่นคงให้กับทุกทีมที่มีส่วนร่วม
และลดความได้เปรียบหรือเสียเปรียบระหว่างกัน

เช่น การเลือกตัวนักกีฬาหน้าใหม่เข้าทีมหรือการดราฟต์
ด้วยระบบที่เน้นให้โอกาสกับทีมที่ทำผลงานได้ไม่ดี
มีโอกาสในการคว้าตัวนักกีฬาอันดับต้น ๆ ในระบบดราฟต์ มากกว่าทีมที่มีผลงานดี

โดยปัจจุบัน 3 ทีมที่มีผลงานแย่สุด จะมีโอกาสเท่ากันที่ 14% ที่จะคว้าสิทธิ์ดราฟต์อันดับ 1
ซึ่งสิทธิ์ดราฟต์ที่แต่ละทีมได้มา สามารถใช้เป็นเครื่องมือในการเจรจาแลกเปลี่ยน
ตัวนักกีฬาระหว่างทีมได้อีกด้วย

นอกจากการรักษาสมดุลระหว่างผู้เล่นในแต่ละทีม
NBA ก็ยังได้กำหนดเพดานค่าจ้างนักกีฬาของแต่ละทีม
โดยมีระบบการคำนวณมาจากรายได้รวมของลีก

ทำให้แต่ละทีมมีเพดานสำหรับการจ่ายค่าจ้างเท่ากัน และหากทีมใดจ้างนักกีฬาเกินเพดานที่กำหนด
จะต้องเสียภาษีเพดานค่าจ้างในอัตราที่สูงมาก ระบบนี้จึงกลายมาเป็นการป้องกันการซื้อตัวนักกีฬาดังไม่ให้ไปอยู่รวมกันภายในทีมเดียวมากเกินไป

อีกระบบที่สำคัญไม่แพ้กันคือ ระบบการคำนวณรายได้มวลรวมของลีก
เป็นระบบที่ช่วยการกระจายรายได้ของแต่ละทีม

โดยทุกทีมจะต้องนำรายได้ส่วนหนึ่งมารวมกันและเฉลี่ยไปยังทีมอื่นเท่า ๆ กัน
เพื่อเป็นการปรับช่องว่างรายได้ ระหว่างทีมที่อยู่ในตลาดขนาดเล็กและใหญ่

เช่น LA Lakers ที่อยู่ในเมืองลอสแอนเจลิส รัฐแคลิฟอร์เนีย ซึ่งมีประชากรเกือบ 4.0 ล้านคน
กับทีม Phoenix Suns ที่อยู่ในเมืองฟีนิกซ์ รัฐแอริโซนา ซึ่งมีประชากรเพียง 1.6 ล้านคน

จะเห็นได้ว่าทั้ง 2 ทีม อยู่ในเมืองที่มีฐานประชากรห่างกันมาก และส่งผลต่อรายได้ของทีม
แต่ระบบของ NBA จะทำให้ทีมที่มีรายได้น้อยกว่าเกณฑ์ ได้รับเงินอุดหนุนจำนวนหนึ่ง
จากทีมที่มีรายได้มากกว่าเกณฑ์

ทั้งนี้ทีมขนาดเล็กก็ต้องมีรายได้ไม่ต่ำกว่า 70% ของรายได้เฉลี่ยที่แบ่งกันในแต่ละทีม จึงจะสามารถรับส่วนแบ่งได้เต็มอัตรา เพื่อเป็นการจูงใจและผลักดันให้ทีมขนาดเล็กปรับปรุงและพัฒนาทีมอยู่ตลอดเวลา

เมื่อองค์ประกอบทุกอย่างถูกสร้างสรรค์และออกแบบมาอย่างดีแล้ว
ก็ส่งผลให้ความนิยมและรายได้ของ NBA เพิ่มขึ้นตลอดหลายปีที่ผ่านมา

ทีนี้เรามาดูกันว่าการหารายได้ของ NBA เป็นอย่างไร ?

NBA เป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีในเรื่องของความหลากหลายของช่องทางการหารายได้
ซึ่งก็คือการกระจายความเสี่ยงจากการพึ่งพารายได้เพียงไม่กี่ช่องทาง

โดยรายได้หลักของ NBA มาจาก 4 ช่องทางด้วยกันคือ

1. ค่าลิขสิทธิ์ถ่ายทอดสด

รายได้ส่วนนี้ ถือเป็นรายได้หลักของ NBA ซึ่งในปี 2016 NBA ได้มีการเซ็นสัญญากับสื่อกีฬายักษ์ใหญ่ของสหรัฐอเมริกาอย่าง ESPN และ Turner Sports ด้วยสัญญา 9 ปี มูลค่าราว 720,000 ล้านบาท
หรือเฉลี่ยปีละ 80,000 ล้านบาท สำหรับการถ่ายทอดสดการแข่งขันของ NBA

โดยสัญญานี้มีมูลค่าเพิ่มขึ้น 180% จากสัญญาเดิมที่ได้ 29,000 ล้านบาทต่อปี
และแต่ละทีมสามารถเซ็นสัญญาถ่ายทอดสดกับสื่อท้องถิ่นได้อีกด้วย

นอกจากนี้ NBA ยังมีระบบสตรีมมิง ชื่อว่า NBA League Pass ที่ให้ผู้ชมสามารถเลือกซื้อได้ทั้งแบบ รายสัปดาห์ รายเดือน และรายปี ทำให้ผู้ชมทั่วโลกสามารถรับชมการแข่งขันได้แบบถูกลิขสิทธิ์

2. ลิขสิทธิ์ทางด้านสินค้าและการสนับสนุนจากสปอนเซอร์

ถึงแม้จะไม่ใช่รายได้ที่มีสัดส่วนที่มาก แต่ก็มีสินค้าหลากหลายแบรนด์ที่พร้อมจะร่วมสนับสนุนกับ NBA
อย่างเช่น การซื้อป้ายโฆษณาบนเสื้อนักกีฬา ซึ่งป้ายดังกล่าวมีขนาดประมาณบัตรประชาชนเท่านั้น แต่กลับมีมูลค่าที่สูงมาก

ในปี 2019 ป้ายแบรนด์เหล่านี้ทำรายได้ให้กับ NBA กว่า 4,500 ล้านบาท
อย่างเช่น Rakuten แบรนด์ E-commerce จากญี่ปุ่น ที่ยอมจ่ายถึง 600 ล้านบาทต่อปี

ที่ยอมจ่าย 30,000 ล้านบาทให้กับ NBA เพื่อแลกกับสิทธิ์ในการผลิตและจัดจำหน่ายชุดบาสเกตบอลของ NBA ทั้ง 30 ทีมเป็นระยะเวลา 8 ปี ซึ่งมีมูลค่าเพิ่มขึ้น 2.5 เท่าของสัญญาเดิมที่เคยทำร่วมกับ Adidas
และ Nike จะต้องจ่ายค่าเครื่องแต่งกายของนักกีฬาใน NBA เป็นมูลค่ากว่า 3,750 ล้านบาทต่อปี ซึ่งคาดว่ามากกว่าที่ Adidas เคยจ่ายให้ถึงเท่าตัว เช่นกัน

3. รายได้จากการจำหน่ายตั๋วเข้าชมในสนาม

น่าแปลกใจที่รายได้ส่วนนี้กลับไม่ใช่รายได้หลักของแต่ละทีม เนื่องจากปัจจุบัน ผู้ชมสามารถรับชมผ่าน ระบบออนไลน์ได้ทุกที่ แต่มีรายงานว่าในฤดูกาล 2019/2020 ค่าใช้จ่ายในการเข้าชมการแข่งขัน 1 เกมสำหรับครอบครัว 4 คน ซึ่งรวมค่าใช้จ่ายหลัก ๆ เช่น ค่าตั๋ว ค่าที่จอดรถ และบริการอื่น ๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้อง ตกเฉลี่ยเกมละ 13,000 บาท ซึ่งเพิ่มขึ้น 2.5% จากฤดูกาลก่อนหน้า

4. รายได้จากต่างประเทศ

NBA ได้มีการขยายตลาดไปยังต่างประเทศมาหลายปีแล้ว และได้กลายมาเป็นรายได้สำคัญของลีก โดยเฉพาะประเทศจีน ซึ่งมีการประเมินว่า NBA มีรายได้จากประเทศจีนปีละกว่า 15,000 ล้านบาท ตัวเลขนี้รวมถึงดีลระหว่าง NBA กับ Tencent บริษัทเทคโนโลยียักษ์ใหญ่ของจีนด้วยสัญญา 5 ปี 45,000 ล้านบาท
ในการเป็นพาร์ตเนอร์ที่ได้รับสิทธิ์ในการถ่ายทอดสดการแข่งขันจาก NBA เพียงรายเดียวในจีน

และกลยุทธ์สำคัญที่ผลักดันให้ NBA สามารถขยายไปยังต่างประเทศได้
ก็คือการเปิดรับนักกีฬาต่างชาติเข้ามาในลีกมากขึ้น โดยในฤดูกาล 2019/2020 มีจำนวนนักกีฬาที่ไม่ได้ถือสัญชาติอเมริกันกว่า 108 คน จาก 38 ประเทศ ซึ่งคิดเป็น 4 เท่าของฤดูกาล 1994/1995

กลยุทธ์นี้ได้ช่วยเพิ่มฐานคนดูของ NBA ในต่างแดน เพราะสำหรับบางประเทศที่กีฬาบาสเกตบอลยังไม่เป็นที่นิยม และไม่มีทีมที่คุ้นเคยไว้ตามเชียร์ คนดูก็สามารถเริ่มต้นได้ด้วยการเชียร์นักกีฬาของประเทศตัวเอง

ถึงตรงนี้ก็คงบอกได้ว่า NBA คือองค์กรที่มีโมเดลธุรกิจที่หลากหลาย
เป็นตัวอย่างขององค์กรที่พร้อมเปลี่ยนแปลงเพื่อสิ่งที่ดีกว่า
และกระตุ้นให้มีการแข่งขันกันเองภายในลีกอยู่ตลอดเวลา
นำมาซึ่งผลงานที่น่าประทับใจแก่คนดูและเจ้าของทีมเอง

ก็เป็นที่น่าติดตาม ว่าถ้าหาก NBA เข้าจดทะเบียนในตลาดหลักทรัพย์
จะมีมูลค่าเท่าไร และในอนาคตจะมีอะไรใหม่ ๆ มาให้เราได้ศึกษา

แต่ดูเหมือนว่าทุกการเปลี่ยนแปลงที่เกิดขึ้น

จากวันที่เหลือเพียง 8 ทีมในปี 1955 จนกลายมาเป็นธุรกิจ
ที่มีมูลค่าตลาด 2 ล้านล้านบาทไปแล้ว นั่นเอง..

Long after the Golden State Warriors were presented with their third NBA Finals trophy in the past four years on Friday night, the game operations crew at Quicken Loans Arena had a few unenviable final tasks to get through.

Because these Finals were so short, and the last game so noncompetitive, the flame-blowing machines affixed to the jumbo screen high above the court had to burn off extra fuel in their tanks before the arena and the NBA season turned over to a long, uncertain summer.

As the Warriors players and coaches celebrated in their locker room, fire sprang forth from the scoreboard toward their families and friends on the court. One last angry, empty lament from the Cavaliers and every other franchise that's tried and failed to dethrone these Warriors over the past four seasons.

"Wow, that felt like that last scene in 'Game of Thrones,'" Warriors coach Steve Kerr's wife, Margot, said, referencing the iconic battle scene in Season 7 of the hit HBO show, when the presumptive ruler of the Iron Throne, Daenerys Targaryen, flies in on her fire-breathing dragon to destroy the superior Lannister army. A great analogy, except the dragon was far more effective.

These flames, like the flames 29 other teams in the NBA hurled at Golden State this season, never really touched them.

Yes, the Cavaliers had a chance to win two of the four Finals games. But that was only due to the brilliance of LeBron James. And even then, there was never a time when the Warriors genuinely felt threatened in this series.

The Houston Rockets took them to seven games in the Western Conference finals and may have prevailed if point guard Chris Paul hadn't injured his hamstring at the end of Game 5. Of course, the Warriors might've won that series in five games if former Finals MVP Andre Iguodala hadn't missed most of it with a leg injury. And even when the Warriors faced elimination, it always felt like they should win, if they simply played up to their capabilities.

Golden State had more talent, more depth, more swagger and more experience than any team in the league -- maybe ever. That's been the case since the Warriors added two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant to a team that won an NBA-record 73 games two years ago.

"We're loaded, and I'm not afraid to say that," Steve Kerr said.

Kerr's challenge this year hasn't been harnessing that talent or figuring out what to do with it. The challenge this time came from within. The Warriors' toughest opponent this year was themselves. Could they stay motivated through the slog of the regular season? Could Kerr remind them to be grateful for the chance at history, rather than bored or resentful at the obligations of greatness?

"Probably the hardest road we have had," Warriors guard Stephen Curry said. "A lot went into this year, mentally and physically, to get to the finish line."

High-class problems, to be sure. But nothing compared to the problem Golden State has created for the rest of the league.

For those who were there at McDonough Gymnasium on August 4, 1994, few will forget the arrival of a 6-0 freshman guard who needed no introduction. As a quarterback and defensive back his sophomore season, he produced nearly 1,600 yards offense and 13 INT's. By his junior year, he accounted for 2,204 yards, 21 touchdowns by rush or interception, and 14 touchdown passes. In a region which has produced NFL quarterbacks such as Michael Vick and Aaron Brooks, there are those who will still say "Bubbachuck" Iverson was better than both of them. Schools such as Arkansas, Kentucky, Duke, and three dozen other top programs across two sports were vying for perhaps the greatest two-sport star the Tidewater had ever produced. When he led Bethel to the state title, someone asked what it was like to win the title. "I'm going to get one in basketball now," which he did. In late February, 1993, en route to the state title he had promised, Iverson was one of a large group of Bethel teammates at a Hampton bowling alley when a fight broke out between students from rival schools trading racial insults. Three people were hurt in the aftermath. Despite conflicting testimony from eyewitnesses and no clear evidence linking him to the crime, Iverson was one of four black students arrested. Racial tensions were heightened when the prosecutors passed on a misdemeanor assault charge and charged Iverson with three counts of felony "maiming by mob", which carried a 20 year prison sentence. Despite video evidence which did not place Iverson in the crowd at the time of the fight, he was convicted in a racially charged case. The 20 year sentence was later reduced to five, and Iverson was granted clemency by Gov. Douglas Wilder three months later, sending Iverson to a detention program at an alternative high school. (The original charges were thrown out by the Virginia court of appeals in 1995.) In the spring of 1994, with Iverson still in detention, his mother approached John Thompson with a plea to help her son get to college and start a new chapter of his life.
