Did you know that until a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling on Monday, it was legal in more than 25 U.S. states to fire workers for being gay, bisexual, or transgender? The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, one of the outcomes of the U.S. civil rights movement, also protects the LGBTQ community. The landmark decision is another example of how public protest movements in democracies like the United States and Taiwan can address historic injustices and affect political change.
