If you use WhatsApp.....you shouldn't. I use LINE. It's better in most every way. Plus someone doesn't need your phone number for you to add them. And it can run on your PC as well as your phone.

But is there an alternative service which offers the same cross-platform messaging – but with better privacy settings? Well, maybe.
LINE messenger is hugely successful in Asia and currently boasts more than 600 million active mobile users – some 200 million fewer than rival WhatsApp.
The app – which has became Japan's largest social network – is available across all major mobile platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Firefox OS and Nokia feature phones.
LINE also boasts fully-featured desktops apps for Windows 7, Windows 8 and OS X.

Although both WhatsApp and LINE sport the ability to send text messages, photos, videos and voice calls over mobile data and wifi connections, LINE does have one major advantage.
The Japanese app is free of charge. WhatsApp currently operates on a subscription plan of 69p per year – although the Facebook-owned app does offer one-year for free.
Another advantage LINE holds over WhatsApp is its broader feature set.
The hugely popular app allows users to transfer payments to contacts from within the app – instead of WhatsApp, which only allows users to send a nagging text message.
LINE also has a Hidden Chats function, which keeps private or tawdry conversation private by allowing users to set a self-destruction timer on their texts, pictures and files.
