Glad to have spoken with Japanese Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide (菅義偉) over the phone this afternoon. We discussed strengthening cooperation between our countries amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and welcomed the resumption of essential travel between Singapore and Japan.
Singapore and Japan are like-minded partners enjoying a longstanding close relationship. We have many opportunities to work together, e.g. in vaccine multilateralism, third-country infrastructure cooperation, and preparing for the digital economy. We also both support multilateralism and are working to sign the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership by the end of this year.
I look forward to partnering Prime Minister Suga to strengthen ties between our countries, and hope to meet him in person soon. – LHL

Today was Day One of the 37th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. ASEAN leaders met via video conference at the plenary session, as well as with PRC Premier Li Keqiang, Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga (菅義偉), ROK President Moon Jae-in (문재인 ) and Indian PM Narendra Modi at our respective ASEAN Plus One Summits.
Under Vietnam’s stewardship, ASEAN has helped its members combat the pandemic. We set up a working group to coordinate the regional response, and mechanisms to collaborate with each other.
I announced Singapore’s contribution of US$100,000 to the COVID-19 ASEAN Response Fund, which will help the region to address the impact of the pandemic.
I also took the opportunity to congratulate State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on her party’s election win in Myanmar.
Virtual diplomacy may not be ideal, but it enables Singapore to work with friends and neighbours, despite the challenging times. Over this weekend, ASEAN will meet with more dialogue partners. We will explore new ways to work together, to recover and move on in this post-COVID world. – LHL
