【英國皇室小故事】為何英女王在Trooping the Colour時側身騎馬? (Side-saddle)

英女王除了出名愛哥基，還很愛馬，直至去年91歲時，仍被看到在Windsor Castle附近騎馬!

後生時，她每年在Trooping the Colour (best known as Queen's birthday parade) 都會穿著相應的軍服親自策騎在軍團前。

大家可有留意到她策騎時是穿著長裙和側身而坐的。

這種騎姿歷史悠久，傳統女性騎馬時也穿著長裙，為保持優雅側騎是唯一的方法。 但這種騎姿其實很考工夫，對馬的要求也很高，需要有特別的訓練。

在1981便曾有一個男人在人群中用手槍發空彈，一度使英女王的馬受驚，但她也能駕馭。多年來在沒有任何人牽馬的情況下隨隊伍行走，兩旁還有這麼多人夾道觀看而沒有任何意外，足見其深厚功力。

一直到1987年，她的馬Burmese退役後，她便再沒有在Trooping the Colours時策騎了，而改為坐馬車。

Trooping the Colour小知識：
Trooping the Colour, 軍旗敬禮分列式，通俗說法即女王壽辰遊行 (Queen's birthday parade)｡ 自1748年開始便有，現為每年6月第2個星期六。所以2018年將在6月9日舉行。

閱兵儀式風雨不改，左上那張圖攝於1982年，下著雨使英女王樣子看來有些狼狽，但一切仍然要繼續的。

右邊的圖拍得很好，除了看到英女王英姿颯颯的樣子，還有她身後的其實是年輕的查理斯王子(左) 和菲臘親王(右) 呢!

制服也非常講究，不同的軍團有不同顏色的帽子羽毛的和紐扣數目。

Welsh Guards(威爾斯衛) 紐扣5粒為一組；
Irish Guards(愛爾蘭衛隊) 4粒為一組；
Scots Guards(蘇格蘭衛隊) 3粒為一組；
Coldstream Guards(高士廉衛隊) 2粒為一組；
Grenadier Guards(擲彈兵衛隊) 則1粒1粒平均分布。

帽子也絕不簡單，名叫bearskin head, 顧名思義，真的是由熊毛做的!

【#荒野拾遺：大石磨軍徽】
．
近來的打卡熱點「蘇格蘭近衛隊第二營」軍徽。
雖其建造年份不詳，但翻查資料發現此營曾於1927年派駐香港，故估計此徽有將近百年歷史。
徽章平日隱沒在茂盛綠草之下，只有山火後才有緣得見真面目，而最近一次明顯外露已是2014年之事了。
．
與友隊 風火山林 輕登山脊，發現「2ND BATT」及「SCOTS GUARDS」字樣依舊清晰可辨，教人無不讚嘆。
只可惜，當看見背後的推土機，我們便知道它或許時日無多了。
圖中紅旗以上的部分，為「古洞北配水庫」的施工範圍，相信軍徽將會被攔腰剷去，埋沒於發展的洪流之中。
翻查政府當年新界東北新發展區規劃及工程研究之環境影響評估報告，似乎從未提及大石磨山上有此軍徽之存在。到底是考證粗疏還是刻意隱暪？實在不得而知。
．
想它大概還有兩星期壽命吧？要去看的行友，好好把握時間吧。

Crank up the volume for music and see the Annapurna Circuit through the eyes of a mischievous 11-year old boy. Watch us deteriorate as we drag ourselves over Thorong La 5,416 meters (17,769 feet). We trekked around Annapurna in Nepal with Lionel over Christmas (yes, boy with long hair!). Lionel was really determined to make it and was actually faster and stronger than his parents ... We were all pushed to our limits and left gasping for breath the day we crossed the high pass – but felt a real sense of achievement.

The Annapurna Circuit is widely regarded as one of the top 10 treks in the world. It has an incredible variety of landscapes. You start below 1,000 meters (3,280 ft) in rice paddies and banana plantations, go through pine forests, past Tibetan Buddhist villages, before tackling the high altitude pass of Thorong La. On the other side, you discover the high altitude desert of Mustang and the deepest valley in the world, the Kali Gandaki.

Lots of research and training went into this two-week trek. We love the great outdoors, and Lionel has been a keen hiker from a very young age. We’ve taken several family trips to the Tibetan plateau in winter, and Kirk and I trekked to the Gokyo Lakes in the Everest region 13 years ago. But this was the first time we tackled such a challenge as a family.

Most travel agencies recommend you should not take children above 3,000 meters (9,840 feet). We looked into easier options, including the Annapurna Sanctuary and Kopra Danda – but Lionel was very keen to scale Thorong La. And we felt he was ready to do it, and we had the experience to guarantee his safety. We played it safe, hiring a guide and two porters to help us -- and we would not have been able to make it carrying all the gear ourselves.

Winter offers clear blue skies and stunning views of the Himalayas. You only meet a handful of people every day, and it's easy to get a room in lodges. A total of 60 people crossed Thorong La on Dec 27, and only 30 the next day.

On the down side, it's bitterly cold at night in unheated lodges. And snow storms can cross the pass at any time. This would mean waiting for a few days for the pass to reopen, or turn back and hike for a week.

This is a high altitude trek. Best to resist the temptation to take the jeep road high up, as you increase your risk of suffering from acute mountain sickness. Give yourself time to acclimatise, and watch out for signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), or worse - HAPE or HACE. It is also essential to have proper equipment to trek in snow, not just for yourself, but for your porters and guide, if you have them.
Remember that over 40 people died around Thorong La on October 14, 2014 when a massive snowstorm hit the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri and Mustang areas. Hiking at that altitude always carries a risk.

We organised this trek through Friends in High Places Himalayan Trekking, who provided a guide (Pasang Dawa Sherpa) and two porters (Sonny and Pinju). We would not have been able to complete this trek without them.

大石磨位於新界北部，共有兩個山頂，同樣高183米。西南方山頂在羅湖分類靶場演習期間會插上紅旗，而東北方山頂則有一個空置軍事兵房。山上可以居高臨下眺望深圳羅湖一帶。南面山坡上，有一個以石塊所堆砌成的軍徽，砌有「2ND BATT」和「SCOTS GUARDS」的字樣，即「蘇格蘭近衛隊第二營」。
Tai Shek Mo is located at northern area of New Territories, there are 2 peaks both with height 183M. If there are target practice activities in Lo Wu Classification Range, the red flag is hoisted on the southern west peak. For the northern east peak, there is a barrack which is no longer in used. On the hillside in southern area, there is an emblem built with rocks, with the texts “2ND BATT” and “SCOTS GUARDS”.
