Somewhat experimental illustration this time.
I wanted to do something based on the cute Arakawa tram line that runs through Tokyo. This is the only remaining Tokyo tram - the line is made from pieces of other, already closed lines.
We went with Kana to do some location hunting walking the whole length of the line and taking many, many pictures in 2017 and I wanted to make something with them since. Recently, I also wanted to try a little bit more simple, illustration-like style of drawing and to practice drawing and designing characters. I decided to use the photos we took to make this illustration including one of the places we photographed and also some characters inspired by the people we saw.
The lines in this piece are done using a LAMY Safari M fountain pen with the Sailor Sei-Boku dark blue ink. the pen works surprisingly well on watercolor paper and the pigment-based ink is waterproof which makes it possible to paint over it with watercolors!

This is a sketch of a Mitarashi Dango selling stall located (apparently) in Takayama. I did this sketch based on a random photo I found on the Internet but you already figured out the exact spot, it's even on Wikipedia:

I wanted to paint this using a new tool I'm still experimenting with: the LAMY Safari fountain pen filled with Sailor Sei-Boku pigment blue ink.
The ink is waterproof so I can use it like this, with my watercolors but because it's blue it does not overwhelm the picture like black lines tend to do. I'm still experimenting with this approach but I like how it looks so far.
