I am a legislator from Taiwan. Let me share a story about the friendship between Ethiopian and Taiwanese people for you.
—————————————————————————
While Tedros, the director-general of WHO, has been criticizing Taiwan wrongly, Taiwan has been helping Tedros’ Ethiopian fellows for decades.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was born in Asmara ( Ethiopia) in 1965. He served as Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia successively. His professional field is microbiology.
Despite being criticized wrongly by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for racial discrimination, in fact, Taiwan has assisted his hometown of Ethiopia through various semi-official and unofficial channels for many years. Taiwan has been helping Ethiopia in many fields such as health care, nutrition and food assistance, education, children and women ’s rights , Psychological and social support, water resources, improving livelihood capacity and income, emergency relief supplies, etc..
According to the “International Cooperation and Development Foundation(ICDF)” totally supported by the Taiwan government budget, there were several Ethiopian students who participated in the “Program of the International Cooperation and Human Resources Training Workshop” held by ICDF in 2012. Some other students participated in the “Clean Energy Development Strategy program” in 2017.
The ICDF said that applications for training must be recommended by the Taiwan Embassy or an international organization. The ICDF will provide financial aid completely for the two-week workshop including the round-trip flight tickets, meals, accommodation and transportation while in Taiwan. The rough estimate of cost was about USD 5,000 for one student.
In addition, there were 5 Ethiopian personnels participated in the "Medical Staff Training Program for Friendly Nations Program" held by ICDF in 2018. The trainees were trained in the Pediatrics Department of Mackay Memorial Hospital and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan. The ICDF and the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs are responsible for the expenses.
The 5 trainees were trained in Taiwan for 1 to 3 months. Besides the hospitals’ funding, Taiwan still needed to cover the expense including flight tickets, allowances, insurance, etc.. It cost at least USD 3000 for each one.
Another story was happened in March of 2020. There was a short-term exchange student named Mary from Ethiopia. She needed an emergency operation for venous thrombosis abruptly. Because she was not eligible for Taiwan health insurance, the medical cost was up to USD 50,000. She expressed that she couldn’t afford the surgery. Later, Mary got donation from the hospital healing her, several Taiwanese cherish organizations, and individuals. All the expenses got zeroed by these Taiwanese beneficence.
Yes, Taiwan Government has criticized the director-general of WHO severely. The first reason is his failing to fulfill duties(e.g., he ignored the crucial information provided by Taiwan at Dec 31st in 2019 and the information was about there were 27 cases similar with SARS and highly human-to-human transmission possibilities). This is not about the COLOR. This is about thousands of departed human lives for his failure against Covid-19. Secondly Taiwan is the only one left behind by WHO. This is DISCRIMINATION made by WHO for decades.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO, should apologize to Taiwan and stop being manipulated by China. And Tedros is welcome to visit Taiwan. He may get the briefing of epidemics prevention by Taiwan and see the beauty of Taiwan.

REPLY TO THE MALAY MAIL
I refer to the front page article in The Malay Mail today highlighting the National Football Development Programme in a way that was inaccurate at best and deceitful at worst.
"Hang your heads in shame!" screamed the front page headline of the paper, centering their sorry excuse for a journalistic exercise around the Mokhtar Dahari Academy, where the NFDP players are housed and train full-time -- except that they're not.
The basis of the article was how the fields in the Academy was left to deteriorate and rot when it was supposed to be the training ground for the cream of the crop in the NFDP, the most talented football players below the age of 17, ready for the world of professional football.
Matter of the fact is that these players have yet to even begin training in the Academy in Gambang. The Mokhtar Dahari Academy is not operational yet, full stop. If the writer would understand the structure of the NFDP and even bother to check with my office on the facts of the programme, he would know that the base of the NFDP players train at the various rapidly growing Akademi Tunas (for ages 7 to 12 years old) and the National Sports School, State Sports School and Pusat Latihan Daerah (for ages 13 to 17 years old) in all the states in the country. Meanwhile the "Projek 2019" boys who NFDP Project Director Lim Teong Kim is trying to groom for the Youth World Cup are now schooling and training full time at 3 National Sports School being SSBJ, SSTMI and SSM Pahang. This set of players for the Project 2019 programme gives NFDP an opportunity to work with a bigger pool of the top U13 prospects who will eventually form the squad vying for a spot in the U17 World Cup in 2019.
NFDP only utilises the fields in Mokhtar Dahari Academy to organise various age group tournaments, selection sessions and coaching courses normally from mid year onwards on an annual basis.
If the writer had bothered to ask anyone involved in the NFDP, he would have known that the ministry is about to award the tender for the second phase of construction for the Academy, and that work is about to start to include staff quarters, hostels, additional training pitches and a common building (for administration, management, and application of sports science among others).
Meanwhile, the maintenance of the current fields will be taken care of by NFDP beginning February 2015.
If he had bothered to do his homework, he would have known that the Academy won't start operations until 2016. If he had actually asked someone, he wouldn't have said that the pitches are currently used by the NFDP U-13 team and four teams from the Education Ministry in collaboration with FAM, because as far as I am aware, being the Youth and Sports Minister after all, the NFDP U-13 team does not train there. Also, the teams at Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Pahang prefer to train at the Academy pitches rather than their school fields.
Since the launch of NFDP by our Honourable Prime Minister in April last year, NFDP has been continuously introducing new methods and practices in order to raise the standards of coaching in the country. With every change, comes more demands and responsibilities which may not suit some coaches and this situation probably resulted in coaches leaving the programme. I am of the opinion that this is normal in any organisation that is trying to effect changes in the way we do things. We are setting new standards and casualties are expected.
While 'The Paper That Cares' was quick to brand NFDP as "false hope", the programme has earned praises from the football world including top European academies such as Sevilla, Real Madrid, Dinamo Zagreb, QPR, Spurs, Reading, Ipswich and BPL giants Chelsea.
A cursory glance at the NFDP’s Twitter and Facebook account would show that our grassroots development is well on track.
I would assume that 'The Paper That Cares' would actually care about getting their facts right. I suppose I've been proven wrong.

The Fulbright Program is one of the most prestigious awards programs worldwide involving over 180 countries. Since 1963, almost a thousand Malaysian have been recipients of this world-renown award including Marina Mahathir, Ramli Ibrahim, Mr. Lewis Pragasam and Senator Koh Tsu Koon.
The Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) established in 1963 promotes inter-cultural understanding through education and educational exchange between Malaysia and the United States.
While most Malaysians shy away from applying to the Fulbright program because of its perceived elitism, a recent interview with MACEE executive director, Dr James Coffman, shed light on the selection process.
Coffman reiterates that MACEE looks for individuals of passion, dynamism and character; who are inspirational and leaders in their own right. They have a good sense of what areas of study they intend to pursue and how these might contribute to their professional development. If this describes you, then Coffman would encourage you to apply.
He stresses that there has to be a sense of balance about the candidate; he or she needs to have strong sense of purpose and be able to carry herself well enough to represent Malaysia.
Among the areas of study offered are in the arts, speech therapy, voice measurement, psychology, behavioral science, dance, photo-journalism, teaching, political science, and HIV/AIDS policy and prevention.
There are a wide variety of grants available through MACEE for educational exchange. Grants for Malaysians include the Fulbright Malaysian Scholar Program, Fulbright Malaysian Professional Exchange Program, Fulbright Graduate Study and Research Program, the International Fulbright Science and Technology Award, Hubert H. Humphrey Program, and the Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program.
Other US Grants (Non Fulbright) include the International Leaders in Education Program and the Global Undergraduate Exchange Program. For more information, please go to www.macee.org.my
