上週，美國《外交政策》雜誌發表文章稱，中國民航總局致信美聯航和美國航空，要求它們不得在網站上將台灣作為單獨與其他國家並列的選項，並給這兩家公司設定期限做出改變。該雜誌援引消息人士的話說，中國民航總局稱，如果兩家航空公司不遵守， 將移交“相關網絡安全機構”予以懲罰。
《外交政策》的文章援引國務院一名發言人的話說，中國公司的網站可以自由地在美國運行，不受政治干預。美國反對中國對美國公司的網站如何服務客戶做出限制。該發言人稱國務院已為此向中國政府表示強烈關注。
上週六，台灣外交部曾敦促美國這兩家航空公司，不要屈服於中國壓力而矮化台灣。
