I am Hazel. I grew up in Tsuen Wan. My parents moved to Hong Kong from China when they were young. They were not well educated and worked in a fabric factory. When I was young, I attended Mary of Providence Primary School. Across the school, is Lung Wah Cinema. The first time I watched a movie was at that cinema. We came from a family that was not wealthy at the time and my parents had to go out to work. They will return home at around ten in the evening. That is why after I was born I stayed in a childcare. When I was a few years old, a babysitter took care of me.
I have two younger sisters who are three years and ten years younger than me. When I was young, the sister who was three years younger than me became my soul companion. My parents had to go out to work and did not have spare time to take care of us. When we went to the park to play, we easily ran into arguments and got into fights with the other children. As I was the oldest sister, I had the responsibility to protect my two younger sisters. Although our living environment was not ideal, it was able to train me into a tough person. It is very much related to my MMA right now because I had experience in fighting when I was small.
When I was in primary three, we moved to Tsing Yi Public Housing Estate. My childhood evolved around Tsuen Wan and Tsing Yi. In secondary school, I enrolled into a Band One English women’s secondary school. It was called Daughters of Mary Help of Christians Siu Ming Catholic Secondary School. But before I completed secondary school, I had to withdraw from the school. It was because a lot of fabric companies closed down. My father was fired by his company. My mother became the financial pillar of the family. Although my school grades were quite exceptional, I knew our family environment was not good. So there was no way for me to continue with school. At that time, my mentality was rather independent. In Form three, I quit school to work in the society in order to support my family. As I am not well educated and because of my tender age, there were not a lot of job options for me. I can only work at the hair salon to do hair washing.
As I have a considerably tall physique, I entered modeling competitions when I was in my teens. I once came in first place. But I came across two challenges at the time because whenever I did not work, I had no income. I cannot keep waiting for modeling jobs each day. Eventually, I became a hairdresser. I thought the ability to learn a set of skills will not starve me. When I was nineteen, I became a hairdresser at a well-known hair salon. Being a model was a dream of mine when I was young. When I was twenty five years old, my living environment became more stable. I then returned to my dream job: modeling. As I modeled, a lot of people recommended me to be a film actress. Serendipitously, I worked in show business. I never thought of becoming an actress.
As my financial situation was not ideal at home, I was envious of other children when I was young. They can participate in many extra-curricular activities and study in a healthy environment. My school grades were rather good. It was just my living environment that was rough so I could not continue with school. I never regretted working in the society at such a young age. It is because it can train me into a fighter. I do not believe in fate. It is because a lot of things are within our grasp. Even though my family situation was humbling, it did not mean there will not be a day when I can succeed. All along, I have been walking the path of my choice with persistence. In spite of the fact that I am less educated than others, it does not matter as long as you try your best. There is still a chance to succeed.
After my parents have retired, I became the financial pillar of my family. I have tried my best, too. My school grades were also not bad. But I feel I am always inferior compared to other people. That is why sometimes I will shut myself out. Back then I would always self-blame and suffer and may not even talk to others. When I was a hairdresser, I found it was not my ideal job. But after a few years of hard work, I thought I have gained somethings.
Competing at the MMA rink is a little like life. When you have the upper hand, it may not be you at your most pristine. The most important part is when you are at a bad situation, you should have a vengeful mentality. You must think you can win the competition. It is similar to life. When you are not doing well and nobody can help you, and if you admit defeat, then you have really lost. I eventually won the G-1 competition because I thought ‘I can do it' in my heart. If you have that kind of persistence, there is nothing you cannot do. That ‘cannot die’ mentality was cultivated since I was young. You need to have self-confidence and cannot bow your head to fate.
I feel I am very fortunate to work in show business. I can do something that I really love. If everyone can find something that they really want to do, they too can do well. They can bloom and radiate.

One of the oldest Chinese restaurants in Ipoh- Hoong Tho Restaurant 鸿图酒楼 has been dishing out Cantonese dishes for more than half a decade; the stir-fries are well-received even by the locals. The main menu features quite an extensive list of Cantonese dishes but do not miss out the display counter at the entrance... displaying some old-school Cantonese pastries. Prices are generally quite reasonable, with good quality. Our recommendations would be their Fresh Water Prawn Noodles and Gui Hua Glass Noodles.
Gui Hua Glass Noodles (Rm 8.50/ small)
Fresh Water Prawn Noodles (Rm 15/ small)
Deep Fried Meat Rolls (Rm 12/ small)

Thank you to the government of Kyoto and d:matcha for sponsoring our trip to Wazuka! We learned a ton of things about green tea that we never knew. Most surprisingly to us was finding out how extremely varied the flavor of green tea (100% JUST green tea) can be based on how it's grown and processed. Since our trip we've been constantly drinking umami green tea and we can't imagine our lives without it!! If you have a chance when visiting Japan, I highly recommend visiting d:matcha, not just for the experience of tasting mindblowingly good green tea, but also because their tea and matcha desserts and snacks are delicious! Oh, and the area is of course beautiful, as well!

Today I visited one of the oldest coffee shops (kopitiams) in Singapore, Killiney Kopitiam. Their history goes back to when it was first opened by an immigrant from Hainan, China in 1919. I loved the old-school vibe and their not-too-sweet kaya jam. The french loaf kaya toast was something new for me and oh man, it was extremely crunchy and nice. Personally I love visiting these traditional eateries where you can feel the culture and history. Please let me know your favorite kopitiam. I would love to visit more.
Thank you Killiney Kopitiam for hosting me. Check out their newly launched online shop from below. They have a promo going on!
