https://twitter.com/HBKMAMBA/status/1293362389161619456

—Damian Lillard

Practice? Allen Iverson didn't need any of it to score 29 points and lead the Denver Nuggets past the San Antonio Spurs 80-77 Thursday night.
Iverson revealed after the game that the reason he had missed all of the Nuggets' workouts this week was because his 4-year-old son, Isaiah, fell face-first from a stool early Monday morning and required plastic surgery.
"He got a big gash up under his mouth," Iverson said. "He was sitting on a stool and what really messed him up was he had his hands in his shirt. And it was a high stool, so when he fell, he couldn't brace it. So he just (smacked the floor)."
Iverson said it was a bloody scene but the toughest part was watching his young son sedated for surgery, "and I was just mentally out of it, man."
Iverson said his son will have to undergo a series of procedures over the next week but that he's back to being his usual rambunctious self -- which took a load off Iverson's shoulders, allowing him to concentrate for a few hours on beating the defending NBA champions who knocked the Nuggets out of the playoffs last year.
"I mean, when he's around the house screaming and yelling like he usually does, then I'm pretty sure he'll be all right," Iverson said. "That was my biggest thing once he started acting like himself again. He's real loud, man."
While Iverson was doing the dirty work offensively, the Nuggets' big men -- Kenyon Martin, Marcus Camby, Nene and Eduardo Najera -- throttled Tim Duncan, who scored 20 points but missed 13 of 20 shots and turned the ball over four times, including a crucial one in the closing seconds.
Anthony Carter, whose 3-pointer pulled the Nuggets to 77-76, stripped Duncan, then fed Martin at the other end for the bucket that gave the Nuggets a 78-77 lead with 45 seconds left.
"He made big plays," Iverson said of Carter. "Everybody talks about 'Melo and myself when it comes to this team, but so many other guys can do things."
"I had a rough shooting day up until that point," said Martin, who was 1-for-7 before his big basket but had a career-high seven blocks, none bigger than his last.
After he put the Nuggets ahead, Martin, who had missed four of five games since straining his right hamstring last month, rejected Tony Parker at the other end, and Iverson sank two free throws with 6.6 seconds left.
After a timeout, Martin had one more defensive gem in him, altering Michael Finley's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.
"Kenyon switched out onto Michael and made it a real difficult shot," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was a good read by Kenyon to switch. Otherwise, Michael would have been open in the corner."
Finley finished with 18 points. Duncan and Parker each had 20.
The Spurs were without Manu Ginobili (finger) for the fourth straight game, and they sorely missed his offense along with Duncan's usual shooting touch.
"They were very physical and I expect that from Denver. I thought they played it the right way. It was frustrating," Duncan said. "A lot of extra fouls here and there. But it wasn't that. It came down to us turning the ball over in rotations. A lot of it down the stretch was my fault. I'll take a lot of responsibility for it."
Duncan missed 14 of his first 18 shots but banked one in, sank a layup and made one underneath to give the Spurs a 75-73 lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Still, he was kicking himself for two late turnovers.
The Nuggets' point total was a low for the season, as was their opponents'. But for once, it was the Nuggets who seized control down the stretch, improving to 3-8 in games they fail to score 100 points.
Carmelo Anthony, who scored 17 points, said the Nuggets' emphasis on defense is finally paying off, and his coach, George Karl, agreed.
"We beat a very good team in their type of game," Karl said. "Defensively, we're actually stronger than offensively right now. It's strange to say, but ... that's good, because the foundation of specialness usually is at
Notes
Martin's previous career high for blocks was six, most recently at Chicago on April 11, 2003. ... G DerMarr Johnson, who played the past three seasons in Denver, returned with the Spurs and scored two points. ... Camby pulled down 18 boards, the 10th time he's recorded at least 18 rebounds this season. The Nuggets are 7-3 in those games. He also scored his 7,000th career point.

The Denver Nuggets have survived long enough without Carmelo Anthony. Now, they can't wait to see how their risky "experiment" works.
Allen Iverson banked in a running 3-pointer in overtime and scored 36 points to rally Denver to a 121-113 victory over the Houston Rockets on Saturday night in the Nuggets' final game without Anthony.
Iverson also had 10 assists, finding Steve Blake in the corner for a 3-pointer with 1:36 left in overtime.
Marcus Camby also had a basket in overtime, scored 12 points and grabbed 22 rebounds for the Nuggets, who went 7-8 in the 15 games Anthony was suspended after fighting in a Dec. 16 game against New York.
"We've survived the 15-game suspension," coach George Karl said. "Now, we've got a 15-game experiment before the All-Star break. And I think everyone's excited about it."
Anthony, who was leading the NBA with 31.6 points per game before his suspension, would've returned for Saturday's game until a snowstorm postponed the Nuggets' Dec. 20 game against Phoenix. He'll be available for Monday's game against Memphis.
"Monday, I get to wake up and it's Christmas," Iverson said with a smile. "Obviously, it's going to be a fun day."
The four-time scoring champion and seven-time All-Star wanted to leave Philadelphia and play for a contender. With Anthony and J.R. Smith back from suspensions, the newly acquired Blake contributing already and Camby playing well, Iverson thinks the Nuggets can make a deep playoff run.
"For me, at this stage of my career, it's just championships. That's all I think about," Iverson said. "Regardless of where we're seeded, we get in a seven-game series with somebody, it's going to be hard for somebody to beat us four times."
Smith, who was suspended 10 games for his role in the New York brawl, scored 24 for Denver. He hit three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter after the Rockets had taken a 90-77 lead.
Blake, acquired a week ago in a trade with Milwaukee, had 12 points, four assists and five rebounds.
"'Melo will add a different dimension to our team and take us to another level," Blake said. "It's about time. We are glad he's coming back."
With Anthony returning, it's up to Karl to figure out how all the pieces fit together.
"We have 15 games before the All-Star break," Karl said. "I have a very good feeling that toward the end of those 15 games, you're going to see us playing pretty special basketball."
The Rockets had won their previous eight home games this season when they reach 100 points.
But Iverson was fouled on a 3-pointer with 2:37 left and hit all three free throws to pull the Nuggets to within 108-103. Camby scored before Iverson swished a 3-pointer from the wing with 1:02 to go to tie the game.
Iverson and Tracy McGrady both missed potential game winners in the final minute. The Nuggets had a chance to win it in the closing seconds of regulation, but Camby missed an unlikely 3-pointer at the buzzer. Camby is 0-for-2 from 3-point range this season.
Both teams struggled at the start of overtime, but Iverson scooped up a loose ball near midcourt, ran to the 3-point line and banked in a 3-pointer just before the shot clock expired to give Denver the lead for good.
"That was a momentum shot," Iverson said. "A lot of times, you want to hit that first basket to see how the other teams respond."
McGrady scored 24 and Juwan Howard added 21 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who've lost three in a row since winning nine of their previous 10.
"We need to get back to doing what got us playing well the last couple of weeks, when we went on that great winning streak," McGrady said. "It was just a game where, if we wanted to play like this, we should have stayed at home."
The Rockets lead the league in scoring defense, but they've allowed at least 100 points in their last four games.
"The last four games defensively, we're not willing to do what it takes to win," said Houston coach Jeff Van Gundy. "We got exactly what we deserved. They got what they deserved because they worked. And we got what we deserved because we didn't."
Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who dropped to 9-5 since Yao Ming broke a bone under his right knee.
The Nuggets are 6-8 since acquiring Iverson on Dec. 22. Despite the absence of Anthony -- and thanks mostly to Iverson -- Denver is still in second place in the Northwest Division.
Iverson had eight points in the first quarter, but the Nuggets trailed 31-25. He came out for a short rest early in the second quarter and Rafer Alston, the man he was guarding, promptly sank back-to-back 3-pointers to push Houston's lead past 10.
Denver trailed 46-33 when Iverson returned with 7:53 left in the half. He was 5-of-6 in the second quarter and had 20 points at the break, but the Rockets led 58-53.
The Rockets led by 13 early in the fourth quarter, but went 11-for-30 in the period to lose for only the fourth time in 43 home games under Van Gundy when they hit 100 points.
Game notes
Mutombo reached double-digit rebounds for the 12th time in 13 games. ... The Nuggets won for just the third time in their last 11 trips to Houston. ... McGrady went 9-for-25 after sitting out Wednesday's loss to Phoenix with soreness in his back.

Anthony Carter made all three of his baskets count. Especially that last one.
His floater in the lane with 0.8 seconds left in double overtime gave the Denver Nuggets a 112-111 win over the shorthanded Houston Rockets on Thursday.
Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points and had a career-high 16 rebounds, and Allen Iverson had 36 points and nine assists for Denver, which ended a two-game losing streak.
With the Rockets focusing on Anthony and Iverson on the last possession, Carter got the chance to be the hero. He got the ball at the top of the key, used a pump fake to get Bonzi Wells in the air and then stepped under him and hit the winner.
"Bonzi switched off and went to 'Melo and I was wide open," said Carter. "He went for the shot fake, I stepped under him for a little runner. In that situation you don't have a chance to think about much."
The Rockets have lost three straight and five of their last six.
"You have to make people shoot over you," Houston head coach Rick Adelman said. "You can't go for a pump fake."
Yao Ming had 26 points and 19 rebounds and Luther Head scored a season-high 22 for the Houston, which played without leading scorer Tracy McGrady, who sat out with a sore left knee.
"We hung tough, dug deep inside and found some energy to find a double-overtime game," said Rafer Alston, who had 18 points. "This one was tough. We were right to end and they hit a big shot."
The Rockets nearly pulled out the win. Yao's two free throws with 4.5 seconds left gave the Rockets the lead, but Carter, who had six points in the game, came through with a 15-footer.
"It looked good all the way," Iverson said. "They played good defense on 'Melo and myself, and we had another teammate step up and make a play."
The game was back and forth in both overtimes. Houston led 106-103 before Chucky Atkins, who had 13 points, hit a 3-pointer with 1:32 left.
Marcus Camby scored his only two points of the game with 59.5 seconds left, but Shane Battier hit a 3-pointer with 35.3 seconds left to give the Rockets a 109-108 lead. Atkins, who missed the first 24 games of the season with a groin injury, hit an 18-foot jumper with 20.1 seconds left to give Denver a 110-109 lead.
"We did a lot of good things, we just didn't get a chance to finish it," Adelman said. "They made two big shots at the end."
The Nuggets led 100-97 in the first overtime but a free throw by Alston with less than a minute left in the period sent the game to a second overtime.
The Rockets trailed 94-87 with 1:40 left in regulation but scored the final seven points, the last on a 3-pointer by Head.
"It was a gutty win," Nuggets head coach George Karl said. "Both teams hit shots, made some free throws. It was unfortunate somebody had to lose."
Anthony, who had eight points on 2-for-17 shooting in the first half, found his stroke in the third quarter. He hit all eight of his shots in the period, and after making a 21-foot jumper from the wing to give Denver a 69-63 lead, he pumped his fist. He scored 16 points in the period. He hit his first shot of the fourth quarter before a 19-footer rimmed out.
"I don't think I could have shot worse than I shot in the first half," Anthony said.
The Nuggets led 44-42 at halftime thanks to their advantage from the free-throw line. Denver outscored Houston 12-2 from the foul line in the first half, when the Rockets were whistled for 11 fouls to the Nuggets' five. Houston didn't attempt a foul shot until Yao went 1-for-2 from the line with 1:30 left in the second period.
Denver trailed 27-23 early in the second when Iverson, who had 18 of the Nuggets' first 26 points, scored on a three-point play and Atkins hit two 3-pointers to spark an 11-2 Denver run.
The Rockets used the 3-point shot to take the lead after the first quarter. Head hit two of them and Alston another to help give Houston a 23-18 lead heading into the second period.
Game notes
Nuggets F Kenyon Martin left the game in the second half with a leg injury and did not return. He is questionable for Friday's game in Portland. ... Head started in place of the injured McGrady, who was hurt in the first half of Houston's loss to Orlando on Wednesday. ... Rockets G Steve Francis was not with the team because of the flu.
