Congratulations to Daren Tang on his official appointment as the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization. This is the first time a Singaporean will head a United Nations agency.

Daren will take over in Geneva on 1 October from Dr Francis Gurry, who has been DG for the last 12 years. Daren has big shoes to fill, but I am confident he will lead WIPO to shape a vibrant and progressive global intellectual property community.

COVID-19 has thrown up new IP protection issues. The right balance will have to be found between enabling discoverers and inventors to profit from their IP, and the public’s interest in quick, affordable and desperately needed drugs, tests, and treatments. I wish Daren and the WIPO team all the best in their mission to support creativity and innovation, and maximise the benefit to humanity. – LHL

美國在台協會處長酈英傑在今年首度由 AIT、歐洲經貿辦事處 (EETO)、日本交流協會 (JTEA) 和台灣經濟部 (MOEA) 共同主辦的以科技業為主題的供應鏈論壇開幕式中致詞。

美國國務院助理次卿 Matt Murray和AIT經濟組副組長邵藹帝也與來自公共部門、企業和智庫的750名參與者分享，討論台灣和其他理念相近夥伴如何加強經濟安全和促進共享經濟。美國期待繼續與台灣合作，促進供應鏈韌性。

“The United States has a unique opportunity to continue to build upon our supply chain restructuring efforts that we started in Taiwan last year. In this effort to secure critical supply chains, we are eager to partner with our friends and partners who share similar values of trust, rule of law, and strong protection of intellectual property,” AIT Director Christensen affirmed during the opening session of this year’s first technology industry-focused supply chain forum cohosted by AIT, the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO), Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA), and Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA.)

U.S. Department of State Deputy Assistant Secretary Matt Murray and AIT Economic Section Deputy Chief Arati Shroff shared their insights on the role Taiwan and likeminded partners can play to enhance economic security and promote shared economic prosperity with more than 750 participants from the public sector, leading businesses and research think tanks during the panels. The United States looks forward to continuing to work with Taiwan in the coming year to expand upon our supply chain resiliency efforts. Today’s announcement, and the resulting expansion of our commercial ties, is exemplary of how these shared values can also help us pursue our shared strategic interests. The United States will continue to collaborate with Taiwan government and industry counterparts to pursue our common interests: a free and open Indo-Pacific; diversified supply chains; and secure, high-quality technology products.
