Disappointed with your team's result, couple or yourself? If you felt it, great because it means you believe that you or anyone around you has the potential to achieve more. Simply telling others to take action does not work every time, individuals has their own priority and interested when they choose what to do or why not to do. As a leader or manager here are 5 power tips to empower your influence to achieve TeamPower.
1. Start with WHY !
Theres a best seller book named "Start with Why" by Simon Sinek, it explains how our mind works when taking new instructions and ideas. People don't buy how you will make it or what you will do, people needs to agree WHY you do it. If your team do not buy in with the WHY, spend more time communicating with the purpose, do not rush into the process and many times it will turn out ugly.
2. Managing Gen Y team members
Managing the post 80s are a hot topic recently. We are now close to 30% of the total workforce in the world. If you are managing age33 to age23, we love empowerment, we enjoy space for ideas creation and like to voice out individual perspective. Bosses' respect needs to be earned by transparent rewards and clear rules and instruction. We respect managers that could simply admit 'I am wrong', give them more challenges with visible recognition. Trust is a sign of motivation. Most will show you results. Y Team members are very much different with Gen X. Gen X people have gone through the post second world war, during the baby boom period, security is one of the key motivation in job opportunities, in the contrary, Gen Y believe in passion, creativity and freedom. Let the Gen Y explore their creativity, you need to earn the respect and trust from them. When you are wrong at something, apologize sincerely and they will respect you more. When they do not have the opportunity for open communication or explore their own ideas within the team, they are ready to pack up anytime for new adventures.
3. Show Care and Concern
Result is the indication for success.Steven Covey, author of "7th habits of highly effective people" wrote, people don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. If you spend more than 8hours per day working, you might spend more time with your team comparing with your family. It is extremely torturing if your working environment is too result driven. It is good that managers or leaders care and be aware with you team member's personal challenges, this will struct a balance between result and harmony.
4. Change starts with Me
Changes is not a mater of "If ", it "when ". Adapting changes is the surviving factor of business teams. Having a high level of awareness of alertness of what's happening in the market will save a lot of fire fighting process. If you want to see changes in your team, you need to start changing from yourself. It's the principle most of us learned before but easily forgotten. Your team's characteristics is the reflection of your own behavior pattern.
5. Coaching Vs Teaching
Coaching have been popular in business management for the past decade, very few business leaders are practicing coaching effectively. Managers has the tendency to teach team members what they have done in the past, if the trick works for you, it doesn't guarantee success for others. You need to understand that your team member should be more competitive than you. Tiger Woods can swing better than his coach but why he still needs one? Your role as a coach is to ask the right question at the right time to realign towards stretched goals. It is your responsibility to discover your team member's strength and make it your team's asset. Try not to spend too much time saving their weaknesses, focus on potentials. Lastly, do you believe your team has the potential to grow? If you don't ,it does not matter after all.
