Evan認為，「香港」並非什麼新的概念，港人並非在最近幾年突然變得與大陸人不同，有顯著改變的，是香港人與大陸的關係；近年越來越多香港年輕人重視自己的身份認同，這個現象是大陸促成的：
" In its cultural arrogance, China has forced the Hong Kong people into a corner, and we have found both our strength and ourselves in the fight.
It may be said that the whilst the new words added to the Oxford dictionary may not represent the Hong Kong identity that people are fighting to preserve, it may be a sign that a distinction is being made, if not within then from outside of the community. As a third-party distinction, it is a recognition that has come about as much from China as from Hong Kong; a reaction as much as an assertion that has highlighted the divide. "
