If you were out in the Civic District and Marina Bay Area last night, you may have noticed that several buildings had taken on a distinct green glow. It was to mark the 5th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, and to show global solidarity with other cities that support this landmark climate accord.
Five years on, climate change has become a more urgent global challenge, especially for a small low-lying island state like Singapore. In my message at the virtual Climate Ambition Summit, I updated what Singapore is doing in renewable energy, transport, low-carbon solutions and green financing, our long-term adaptation plans and investments in coastal defences.
Ultimately, Singapore will not be able to stop climate change on our own. This global challenge requires a global response. Singapore will continue to play our part, and meet our commitments under the Paris Agreement. – LHL

Answered a question today on Singapore’s role in sustainable development. This was in a dialogue at the FutureChina Global Forum organised by 通商中国 Business China.
I joked that Singapore is such a small country that even if we all stopped breathing it would make little difference to climate change. More seriously, we have few options for renewable energy. There is no space for nuclear power, and other sources are either not feasible (wind, hydro) or limited in scale (solar), so we have to rely heavily on fossil fuels.
But we will be a responsible member of the global community, and help to build consensus on an international agreement which is fair and implementable for all countries.
Also each of us can make changes to our lifestyles, to save energy. Every little bit counts. - LHL

One year ago, President Trump announced his intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement. But Trump’s attempt to abdicate American global leadership has only strengthened the international commitment to fight climate change. There are more countries in the agreement and acting on climate today than one year ago. Around the world, the building of new renewable energy capacity continues to outpace new fossil fuel power plants, and electric vehicles are poised for major growth. And the number of U.S. cities, businesses, and universities that have reaffirmed their commitment to climate action is in the thousands—and rising. Plus, powerful new initiatives are being introduced, such as former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge, which commits tens of millions of dollars for 20 of the 100 most populous U.S. cities to tackle climate change. Many people (like 5!) asked me about my views on climate change so here it is! The video can be pretty tedious if climate change isn’t a topic you are interested in in the first place, but I felt that climate change is such a complicated topic that without a long ass video I can’t really properly explain my disdain for Greta Thunberg’s speech.
Yes I know she’s a teen and she’s autistic but it doesn’t change the fact that she’s preaching a dangerous message that will have serious negative economic impact, especially on the poor and for poorer countries.
If you can’t be bothered to watch the entire video, here is the TDLR: The climate crisis cannot be solved simply blaming people for their greed. Everything comes at a cost and the current climate situation is the price to pay for the peace and prosperity that we all enjoy. Everyone is to blame. To implicate change comes with cost, which doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to improve the current climate situation, but people should be made aware of the cost first. Actually I can’t really summarize it just watch the video goddammit

In 2014, IKEA was among the founding members of a global campaign to get the world’s most influential businesses to use 100% renewable power. Known as the RE100, today it’s a consortium of 186 (and counting) companies, including H&M, Nestle, Apple, Google, Facebook, Walmart, Coca Cola, Goldman Sachs, and many more. In total, their electricity demand is approximately 200 terawatts hours - just slightly larger than the electricity demand of Thailand. Today, we talk to Sam Kimmins, head of RE100. Sam has 20 years experience leading sustainability projects in the shipping, aviation, food, construction, and NGO sectors.
This is a podcast about how NOT to save the environment. Hosted by Nature N8 (Nate Maynard), an environmental researcher working on energy, ocean, and waste issues.
