Recently the studio received inquiries from two churches in the U.S. to use the painting "Jesus Walking on Water" in their services. This painting is about the only painting I did on religious themes. Below is the story behind the painting.
I moved from Mainland China to Hong Kong in the early 1980s and rented a small apartment in the industrial area of Kowloon, Kwun Tong. There were a lot of migrant families in this area, residing in cramped apartments. There were also a lot of American and British missionaries promoting Christianity in this area. It was my first encounter of Christianity.
When I first started reading the Bible, I realized there were a lot of stories suitable for paintings. So I did a pencil study of Jesus Walking on Water. When I was contracted to provide Simic Gallery in Carmel, California, a number of paintings periodically in the 1980s, I created a narrative oil painting on the topic. Unfortunately, there is no picture of this painting.
In 1987, the founder of Taipei’s Grace Baptist Church, Zhou Lian-Hua, commissioned a portrait from me. He was very pleased with the result and presented me a hardcover Bible. I read it from time to time. Once, I came upon the passage of Jesus walking on water again and thought of another composition. Why don’t I put the small boat and the disciples in the billowing waves in the front? They were surprised by the scene of Jesus walking on water in the distance. This should be interesting.
It took me years but here is the painting finally after a pencil study, oil painting study and studies of models for characters in the painting.
The pastor of one of the churches that requested permission to use the painting in their upcoming service commented, "It is a powerful illustration and one I believe they would find encouraging in the tumultuous seas we are now navigating." So it seems someone is in agreement with my interpretation of the famous scene.

Jackie Chan portrait made of 64,000 CHOPSTICKS! :) Such an honour working with him on this in Beijing!!!
It wasn't easy to choose the material for Jackie's piece. He is a world famous actor, an exceptional martial arts fighter, an environmentalist, and one of the most well-known faces internationally! I finally decided on chopsticks because Jackie had used them in some of the fighting scenes in his movies the Fearless Hyena and Karate Kid, and because chopsticks are Chinese. As he is also an environmentalist, I used disposable bamboo chopsticks to show that discarded materials can be reused and made into something meaningful and beautiful. This art installation is a tribute to the life, art and cultural significance of Jackie Chan.
I spent a month collecting 64,000 chopsticks, in Zhejiang and in Beijing. I tied them into different bundle sizes with strings, and then hung them on a steel frame. This was a hanging piece that had to be suspended with steel cables, so I had to make sure that it was structurally stable enough to carry that many chopsticks. I also hung 60--for Jackie's 60th birthday--bamboo chopstick holders filled with skewers that formed the word 'long' (dragon) because Jackie's name in chinese means "Dragon". The installation is best viewed from the front, where the portrait is most visible. From its side, waves of chopsticks tied in bundles is seen.

What inspired me?
When I first moved to Shanghai, I stumbled upon an old residential alleyway and saw bamboo sticks poking out of windows with laundry hanging onto them, waving in the air.
To me, that was incredibly beautiful. And the amazing thing is seeing something so traditional in a modern, fast-paced city like Shanghai. When I told locals how I was fascinated by these, they said, 'You crazy! This is so ugly!' Haha.
Zhang Yimou is a famous Chinese film director, who directed the movies Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Raise the Red Lantern, and also was the art director for the Beijing Olympics. Many of his movies reflect the beauty of the Chinese culture, through the use of bamboos and traditional costumes. I thought Zhang Yimou's portrait done in a Shanghainese laneway, with bamboo and laundry would be perfect for this project.
I ended up using 750 pairs of socks because shirts were too big and expensive, plus I found an interesting way to pin the socks together, creating a diamond-shaped piece of skin. It was interesting to see the different angles of shadows casted on it throughout the day.
Also, notice the quirks of the local Chinese living in that area! Many of them were really curious and came to help. What started off as a personal piece became a community project! It was amazing seeing how they were excited to see this piece come into completion...and this was also how I got to know my neighbours in Shanghai! :)
