Walking along Changi Beach on the New Year weekend, I saw this man sitting under a tree, alone yet not alone. He looked like a foreign worker, calling home on his cellphone.

As we enjoy the festive days with friends and family, let us spare a thought for the foreign workers who have left their families behind to work in a distant land. They build our HDB flats and MRT lines, keep our roads clean and parks green, and take care of our young and elderly. They slog and save to support loved ones, but at least with the internet and cellphones they can keep in touch, and feel not quite so far away. – LHL

We are all fighting COVID-19 together. The circuit breaker measures take effect tomorrow. They will affect us all.

DPM Heng Swee Keat announced a “Solidarity Budget” today in Parliament, to help see Singaporeans through the circuit breaker period. This is on top of the earlier Unity Budget and Resilience Budget. There will be more protection for jobs and livelihoods, more support for workers and firms, and more help for all Singaporeans. Some schemes will be enhanced, others will be brought forward so help can reach you sooner. You can find out more in the link below.

But all these measures will be in vain, unless we all comply strictly with the measures. Everyone needs to be serious about staying at home, and not go about unless absolutely necessary. If you have to go out, practise safe distancing.

If you see the elderly out and about, please gently remind them to stay home. They are the ones most at risk from COVID-19. Be responsible and protect your family, friends, and fellow Singaporeans. – LHL

Happy Mother’s Day to all mums and mums-to-be!

Mothers are the pillars of our families, with one of the toughest jobs of all. Nowadays they raise children, build careers, care for elderly parents, or even become the sole parent in a family. While their roles and responsibilities have evolved, mothers’ unconditional love and support remain strong and steadfast.

Let’s celebrate our mothers’ contributions as leaders, caregivers, providers, and role models. Take time today, and everyday, to show your mum how much she means to you! – LHL

My wife's father is in an old folk's home. He is slowly going insane and recently has started biting people. So they keep him tied to his bed much of the time. He hates it. He cries and screams constantly. That's his life. Tied to a bed, in an old folks home, pumped up on drugs....with no friends or family around (most of the time) and waiting for death. Nice.
