在台灣即將上映的電影 "Spotlight" (驚爆焦點)一電影的介紹短文這樣寫著: "The true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core."
你知道嗎，在這樣短短一句話中，true story, uncover a scandal, massive scandal, child molestation...就有至少四組的搭配詞 (collocations)。 簡單定義，搭配詞就是語言中一個字與另外一個字「習慣連用的詞組」，每一個英文好的人，「必定」腦袋裡有很多很多的搭配詞組。單從片名 "Spotlight"來看，相關的搭配詞組我們就可以學習:
to put sth under (the) spotlight
to put a spotlight on sth
連用用錯了，聽起來就台台的不夠道地。
搭配詞不夠，就會很常「語塞」，講半天表達出來也不夠到位。
