I enjoy Xinyao (新谣) songs like 细水长流 and 小人物的心声, but I did not know much about the history of the Xinyao movement. So when I heard about the movie 我们唱着的歌 The Songs We Sang, I decided to go.

Ho Ching and I watched the movie yesterday. It told the story of Xinyao, how it began with student groups in the old Nantah composing 诗乐 (poems to music) in the late 1970s, then became popular with JC students who were bilingual, and now has caught on with a new generation, and even beyond our shores in Taiwan.

Xinyao's history is tied up with the changes in our society and education system, and the difficult time which that generation of Chinese-speaking Singaporeans had, in schools and at work, adjusting to the new economy using English as the working language.

I found the movie moving and powerful. And I got a surprise bonus — in one scene I found my old Chinese teacher 黄伟光老师 teaching a class in Catholic High School!

Afterwards, I chatted with director Eva Tang and part of her team who made the movie, to congratulate them and tell them how much we enjoyed it.

昨天我和何晶看了《我们唱着的歌》，才知道原来“新谣”是“新加坡年轻人自创歌谣”的简称。虽然常听到“细水长流”和“小人物的心声”，但是对新谣的历史和时代背景不是很熟悉。邓宝翠导演把新谣的点点滴滴整理成一部富有感情，很有意义的记录片。

💕「愛台灣，我的選擇」系列第六發：美國在台協會高雄分處處長歐雨修的台灣青春歲月💕

「1994當年我即將畢業於德州大學，那時候德州大學每年都會提供獎學金給學生到師大學習中文，而我很幸運的申請到了！其實我曾考慮去日本念書，但最後決定來台灣繼續學習文言文。現在回想起來很好玩，因為當時我只離開過美國一次，而且我也不知道台灣會是什麼樣子，所以來台灣後我整個很驚喜。1994年的台灣和現在有些不同，但也有些事物保持原樣，比方說：台灣人還是超級親切、食物依然非常美味，雖然那時台北還沒有捷運，但台北的公共交通已經很便利了，台灣真的很讚！1998年我以美國在台協會實習生的身分回到台灣，2006年到2010年間，我回到台灣學台語，接著在美國在台協會經濟組工作；2017年我以美國在台協會高雄分處處長的身分再度回到台灣，我跟你說台灣真的是日新月異，進步神速！我常常開玩笑說，美國中西部人和台灣人是世界上最友善的人，不過台灣南部人好像又更友善更親切，而且我覺得南部的食物又更好吃（恩，我知道有人會不同意啦）。」

💕Why I Chose Taiwan #6 💕

"I was graduating from college in 1994 and every year my school, the University of Texas, had a fellowship to study Chinese at 師大 (National Taiwan Normal University, NTNU). That year I applied for it and I got it. I also had the option of going to Japan, but I decided that I wanted to come to Taiwan to keep studying classical Chinese at 師大. It’s funny, thinking back, at that time I had only been outside of the U.S. once before, and I had no preconceived idea of what Taiwan would be like. So obviously, I was very pleasantly surprised. This was 1994, so Taiwan was a little bit different than it is now, but some things are the same: The people were super nice, the food was excellent, and public transportation in Taipei was convenient, although they didn’t have the MRT quite yet. It was a great place to be. Then I came back as an intern at AIT in 1998, and then I was here from 2006-10, studying Taiwanese and then working at AIT in the economic section. I’ve been back again since 2017 as the Principal Officer of our AIT branch in Kaohsiung, and I can tell you Taiwan just keeps getting better and better. I always joke that the nicest people in the world are mid-Westerners and Taiwanese people, and I believe that here in the south, they somehow manage to be even nicer, even friendlier. 蘇戴娜（Diane Sovereign）就任美國在台協會文化新聞組組長。蘇戴娜於2002年加入美國國務院，並先後擔任美國駐亞洲、歐洲和美洲的外交官。她曾擔任位於布魯塞爾的美國駐北大西洋公約組織使團政治官、美國駐伊拉克摩蘇爾文化新聞組組長、美國駐中國北京舊大使館領事官和政治官、美國駐中國北京新大使館副發言人、美國駐武漢總領事館總領事、美國駐渥太華大使館文化官、美國駐布宜諾斯艾利斯大使館發言人。在進入政府部門之前，她曾在洛杉磯和舊金山的國內法律師事務所擔任7年的公司法律師。

✨Diane Sovereign Assumes Duties as AIT’s Public Affairs Officer✨

Diane Sovereign is currently head of Public Affairs at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). She joined the United States Department of State in 2002, and has served as a diplomat in Asia, Europe and the Americas. Prior positions include: USNATO in Brussels as a Political Officer; in Mosul, Iraq as the Public Affairs Officer; at the “old” Embassy in Beijing, China as a Consular and Political Officer; at the “new” Embassy in Beijing as the Deputy Spokesperson; at the U.S. Consulate in Wuhan, China as the Consul General; at Embassy Ottawa as the Cultural Affairs Officer, and at Embassy Buenos Aires as the Press Attaché. Prior to government service, she spent 7 years as a corporate lawyer in the Los Angeles and San Francisco offices of a national law firm, practicing labor and employment law.

Born in Japan, she was educated in California, receiving her B.A. in International Relations from Pomona College and her J.D. from UC Hastings College of the Law. In 2019, Diane obtained a Master’s Degree in National Security from the U.S. National War College, Eisenhower School. Diane speaks Chinese, Spanish, and French. She and her daughter arrived in Taipei from Washington D.C. in the summer of 2020.

Jessie Chung is an international recording artist and actress based in Australia, currently under the management of Future Entertainment & Music Group. She is the only Malaysian artist who has stormed foreign charts, including the prestigious Taiwan 5 Music International Chart, and the I Radio Top Hits Chart. True to her multitalented status, she is also a doctor of medicine in oncology, naturopathic doctor (US), certified nutritional consultant (US), homeopathic doctor, certified iridologist, biotech researcher, accomplished entrepreneur, author, martial arts coach, and philanthropist from Malaysia. After her studies, she devoted herself into the entertainment industry and charity; so far, she has released eight albums and starred in three feature films. In 2013, she took on lead actress in the Chinese film Faces and Malaysian film Unchanging Love. She also appeared in the 2014 film Kungfu Taboo.
She is known for her ebullient and enigmatic concert performances in countries all around the world, including the United States, Canada, China, Taiwan, and Malaysia. With experience in dozens of concerts in five different languages, Jessie yielded huge responses from fans around the world during her 2015 Love Unity Concert, leaving barely any space in the arena. Building on her success from the previous year, she proceeded to perform in the Jessie Chung Exquisite Chinese Orchestra Concert in 2016, selling out all ten performances. The album was well received by the public and has received appraisal from music journalists. She has appeared on numerous TV shows in Taiwan, and her album was strongly recommended by the TV hosts of the programmes, one of them being Kevin Tsai (Cai Kang Yong), in his legendary TV show Kangsi Coming. Exhibiting a strong presence on TV shows, Jessie has recently been invited to host TV shows in both China and Australia.
Besides, she authored Stay Away from Cancer, Stay Away from Diseases, and the Jessie Diary series, informing the world with her medical experiences while also giving them a peek into her soul. As an accomplished martial arts practitioner, Jessie has successfully achieved the 5th Duan of Chinese Wushu Duanwei; she is also a certified Wushu coach, referee, and instructor. She has won a total of 12 gold medals and 5 silver medals in various international Wushu competitions.
