Revelatory Brushwork: A Guided Journey Through the NPM's Collection of Chinese Calligraphy
Preface to the Orchid Pavilion, Wen Zhengming (1470-1559), Ming dynasty
Wen Zhengming (1470-1559) was a native of Changzhou in Jiangsu province. His given name was Bi, and he had the sobriquets He Who Stops the Clouds (Tingyunsheng) and the Recluse of Mount Heng (Hengshan Jushi), but he typically went by his style name, Zhengming. In addition to being an accomplished poet, prosaist, calligrapher, and painter, Wen was also an erudite connoisseur of the arts.
Wen Zhengming was fond of making copies of the "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion." In his inscription on the tail end of this scroll, he noted that he was eighty-nine years of age at the time of writing. Wen's brushwork, the structures of the characters, and the overall composition markedly differ from the received version of the "Preface to the Orchard Pavilion" in Wang Xizhi's (303-361) hand, indicating that Wen was making a study of the spirit of Wang's writing, rather than its technical particulars. Here the brushwork is understated and reserved, allowing for finely-structured characters. The many places where brush strokes flow one into the other give the scroll an outstanding sense of natural movement.

Chusong Modelbook

Chusong Modelbook
Su Shi, Song dynasty
Su Shi (1037-1101), whose style name was Zizhan and whose sobriquet was Dongpo ("Eastern Slope"), was one of the four masters of Northern Song dynasty calligraphy.
In 1084, while Su Shi was traveling overwater to Yangxian (Yixing in present day Jiangsu province), he wrote the contents of the "Chusong Modelbook," which express his desire to plant mandarin oranges and build a pavilion in this region. Su's original inscription is lost, and only block-printed editions remain. This modelbook, written entirely in running script (xingshu), was donated to the NPM by Mr. Tan Boyu and Mr. Tan Jifu. It is distinguished by lines that show generous thickness as well as discretion where they make rounded turns, but are decisive and forceful where they make angular turns. The characters fluctuate in size, given rein to gradually grow until brought to sudden stops. The overall composition is unrestrainedly natural and utterly unaffected—this is clearly a work of excellence written in a flourish of inspiration.

【Roumao Modelbook】Zhao Mengfu, Yuan dynasty
Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) was a leader in Yuan dynasty literati painting and calligraphy. The artistic principles he espoused, which called for a return to ancient ways, had a far-reaching influence.
The contents "Roumao Modelbook" were originally a formal letter included along with a gift. "Roumao" is a reference to sheep. The letter was written in running script (xingshu), with the occasional appearance of draft cursive (zhangcao). There are rich permutations in the sizes of the characters and the thicknesses of the lines. The columns of writing present dignified straightness, while the overall composition is one of delightfully elegant disorder. This calligraphy is Wang Xizhi's (303-361) stylistic descendant, but it includes frequent use of decisive, heavy downward pressure on the brush and full exposure of the brush's tip. These techniques set off the interactions between the angular and rounded turns in the characters' lines, as well as the quick traces of the brush's movements and the relationship between dots and lines, increasing the work's charming sense of fluency.

Meng Haoran (Chinese: 孟浩然; Wade–Giles: Meng Hao-jan; 689/691–740) was a major Tang dynasty poet, and a somewhat older contemporary of Wang Wei, Li Bai and Du Fu. Despite his brief pursuit of an official career, Meng Haoran mainly lived in and wrote about the area in which he was born and raised, in what is now Hubei province, China. Meng Haoran was a major influence on other contemporary and subsequent poets of the High Tang era because of his focus on nature as a main topic for poetry. Meng Haoran was also prominently featured in the Qing dynasty (and subsequently frequently republished) poetry anthology Three Hundred Tang Poems, having the fifth largest number of his poems included, for a total of fifteen, exceeded only by Du Fu, Li Bai, Wang Wei, and Li Shangyin. These poems of Meng Haoran were available in the English translations by Witter Bynner and Kiang Kanghu, by 1920, with the publication of The Jade Mountain. The Three Hundred Tang Poems also has two poems by Li Bai addressed to Meng Haoran, one in his praise and one written in farewell on the occasion of their parting company. Meng Haoran was also influential to Japanese poetry.
