Today is International #OrangutanDay. Orangutans are natural farmers of the rainforest. They travel great distances across the landscape, consuming and dispersing different seeds as they go. In the process, they help to maintain and grow the diversity of trees in the forest, a hugely important role for this large, flagship species so well known and loved around the world. For this reason, orangutans are also an important measure of the health of an ecosystem: if a forest has orangutans, it also means it is home to many, many other species of flora and fauna!
For the last 20 years, the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, with support from national and international partners, has run vital field conservation initiatives, ranging from orangutan rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction to the wild, biodiversity research and habitat protection. SOCP's work has resulted in tangible impacts for orangutans and their rainforest home, not least the establishment of the two new populations of reintroduced orangutans in Sumatra.

After positive developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina where the Federal Prime Minister and his government have pledged to take legal steps immediately and protect the country's Blue Heart rivers, there is very promising news coming from Albania. Vjosa, one of Europe’s last big wild rivers might be saved from hydropower development.
On September 25th, Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the Kalivaç dam project was rejected and that the area will become a national park. The Vjosa Wild River National Park would become Europe’s largest river conservation site covering several hundred kilometers of rivers and streams and protecting hundreds or even thousands of species like the globally endangered European eel and the recently discovered Vjosa stonefly.
This would be a huge achievement for Albania and the rest of Europe, and the park could become a role model for the Biodiversity Strategy within the framework of the Green Deal. Looking forward to more good news about concrete actions for permanent and full river protection in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, and the rest of the Balkan's Blue Heart region.

Officials have issued a warning of "catastrophic fire danger" as firefighters battle over 60 blazes raging across the Australian state of New South Wales, which has caused the tragic loss of lives and livelihoods. There have already been significant harmful impacts to wildlife, with entire ecosystems up in smoke and individual species affected, including around 350 Koalas presumed dead – all before the fires reach their peak.
Our hearts go out to the victims of the current fires, which we know have been exacerbated by the decline of native biodiversity. Australia has the worst mammal extinction rate on Earth, and the country is amongst the worst 7 countries worldwide for biodiversity loss. Australian conservation efforts need a radical overhaul. Mitigating the intensity of these fires, mostly set by humans and their activities, can be achieved by restoring our native ecosystem engineers, such as bandicoots, bettongs and potoroos.
These species help to maintain healthy forests by continually turning over and breaking down forest leaf litter, thereby drastically reducing fuel load. In their absence, fires are more intense, often reaching the treetops, which can affect populations of species already on the brink, like the Koala.
Slow growing and ancient Australian East coast temperate forests are of global significance, as these forests have some of the highest carbon storage on the planet. Fires of this intensity threaten their very existence but managing wildlife to reduce fire intensity and protect forests is under-appreciated for its importance in reducing the release of carbon into the atmosphere.
Aussie Ark works with Australia’s most threatened and imperilled wildlife, several of which are extinct on the mainland. Native wildlife conservation sanctuaries provide refuge, as well as source populations for rewilding and restoring Australia’s native ecosystems.
Our sincere well wishes go out to all those affected by these devastating fires. If you encounter any injured wildlife, please contact your local animal authorities for rescue and rehabilitation.

Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden (KFBG), also known as Kadoorie Farm, was originally set up for aiding poor farmers in the New Territories in Hong Kong. It later shifted its focus to promote biodiversity conservation in Hong Kong and south China, and greater environmental awareness. It is located near Pak Ngau Shek, encompassing Kwun Yum Shan in the central New Territories.

With travel temporarily halted, we decided to explore the hidden gems within Singapore. Join us as we explore Thomson Nature Park, the 50-hectare buffer park unique for its rich cultural heritage as the site of a former Hainan Village. Thomson Nature Park is also home to a rich array of biodiversity and is notably a key conservation site for the critically endangered Raffles’ Banded Langur.
There are five trails within this park: Ruins and Figs Trail (1.50km), Streams and Ferns Trail (1.40km), Rambutan Trail (0.40km), Langur Trail (0.35km), and Macaque Trail (0.15km). Although we weren't fortunate enough to spot the elusive Raffles' Banded Langur on our multiple trips here, we did manage to catch wild boars and plenty of cheeky macaques.
May our videos be a form of escapism and source of zen for you, and encourage you to appreciate the little, simple things in life. Even in these turbulent times, there is still much beauty in this world if we keep our hearts and minds open.
Cheers!
