Behind the project: Jay Chou portrait, Feb 15 2012
My absolute favourite Jay Chou song...and it became one of my favourite painting methods.
I heard this song on the radio today and this song always brings me back to a certain time in life, much like the story Jay was trying to tell of how he time-travelled to the past. I did this in one of the meeting rooms in my office on a weekend (after getting permission, of course!). Some of my colleagues were working over the weekend and a few hours of working on this piece, two of them curiously came over and wondered what all the noise was about (I was stamping the cups on table non-stop!) and why there was a strong coffee aroma wafting through the office. I was only half way through this project and it just looked like a hot mess then...they must've thought I was crazy. :)
When I did this piece, I used coffee-cup rings to capture the song's nostalgic lyrics, and Jay's portrait was created to look like a sepia-toned old photograph to capture the essence of this story. The ending of the song about autumn leaves and fragmented pieces, "飘落后才发现 这幸福的碎片, 要我怎么捡?" is shown through the many individual rings - many of them broken and imperfect like fallen autumn leaves, forming Jay Chou's portrait.
